Some Pure Speculation on Conference Rumors

1. IMHO the B1G 10 is the gateway to the SEC for Clemson. First the B1G offers the Tigers for conference footprint expansion. Then the SEC blocks the expansion by offering Clemson. 2. ESPN/SEC works out the money after B1G/Fox Sports offers to work out the money situation for Clemson's B1G entry. 3. Academics. Yes, the ACC is academically a powerhouse. The B1G is very strong. Vandy, UGA, UF, and UT are very strong. Clemson adds an outstanding engineering school for either conference. 4. Both the SEC and B1G are proud of their land grant institutions. Clemson fits in both. Clemson can pursue and step up to research, endowments, academic alliances as required. 5. Money talks. It's been correctly documented on Tnet and elsewhere that Clemson cannot compete in the long term by staying in the ACC with 1/2 the annual TV revenue of SEC and B1G schools.
Seems to be whispers in the air that Big 12 will spark another wave of conference realignments. We shall see. Certainly interested in this subject as it sets the table for everything.

$EC academics are nothing compared to the Big and ACC. If that matters then there is your answer. Unfortunately, I don’t think it matters…

If moves are going to be made, I would rather see the ACC convince ND to be in for football and add Kansas, Oklahoma St and TCU. That would make a great conference in many sports.

If you are referring primarily to football in this scenario,

I could easily see within 5 years where there are no academic requirements anymore.

Conference expansion will be driven 99% by athletics. Academics will be pretty much an afterthought.

Your point #2 is the key. Nothing is going to happen until that gets figured out...

Maybe I need a definition of speculation, but how can you speculate on something that is rumor?

I agree. The SEC DOES NOT want the B1G in the southeast. The B1G knows for a fact that will spread their footprint and get a huge program in Clemson.
Then the southeast comes crawling in with an offer.

Yes for this reason alone If I were the SEC I would bring in Clemson, GT, FSU and Miami to keep the B1G out of the deepest part of the southeast.

My singular thought is, if the ACC is doomed, Clemson needs

to wind up in the SEC. I don't care what goes on to get us there, that is where we need to be.
The BIG makes ZERO sense, from having no natural rivals, to horrendously long travel for all sports, and, lets face it, other than their Big Two, not much in the way of sustained football power. Sure, they have some teams that make mid to lower tier bowls part time, but the SEC has schools that rise up and take the whole thing, and not always the same two.
Will it be harder for Clemson to compete in football? Absolutely. Can we continue to win at a high level? Also absolutely. We recruit at their level now, our recruiting will hit another plateau if these kids who have their heart SET on playing in the SEC no longer have to discount us.
I think the member schools of the SEC also know this, which is one reason the SEC hasn't fallen all over themselves to extend us an invitation. But, as in the OP's narrative, if it comes down to letting us go to the BIG, or inviting us to join the SEC, I believe that invite hits the airwaves real quick.

Clemson should take steps to be AAU university some day no matter the conference situation.
