Conference champs getting a bye was used to convince the conferences to agree to expand the playoffs.

Now that it's been done...the bye will eventually disappear because it doesn't work to the advantage of the 2 larger conferences.

It’s for ALL FBS conferences. There is no longer the explicit “highest ranked G5” verbiage.

And by the fact that you said there are only four Power conferences - yes this assures at least on eG5 representative. And in theory one could have two, three, or even five G5 auto qualify. In theory.
