So after the ga tech game

I questioned whether or not that was Brownell’s Tommy Bowden Wake Forest game.

Not because of the loss to an inferior opponent, but because of the perception of the coach and team possibly becoming dejected, and complacent with playing hard but still losing.

I was wrong.

I’m not saying this team is ncaa bound or that Brownell is or is not a good coach.

I’m saying that tonight was a win I did not expect to happen and I celebrate it with all of you.

Go tigers.

I'm curious. I've seen a lot of posts on this being a great win. Was it really? I consider a great win a Pitt going to Cameron and upsetting Duke. Seems counterintuitive to me. We were favored to win. We were expected to win.

It's like saying in football that the wake win was a great win. Don't misinterpret what I'm saying. It's always a great day any Tiger team wins in any sport. So why are so many people acting like we knocked off Florida St.

Not sure why, if before you thought he might be Tommy Bowden and now you say you were wrong. Bowden would lose a game to inferior talent and then win the next game, would he not?

And b4 anyone says it, spare the comment it's hard to win on the road. Do teams get upset? Yes, basketball is unique in that respect.

Never said this is a great win.

I thought this team was at the point of not trying anymore because they knew their coach was on the proverbial hotseat.

That’s why I compared the ga tech loss to Tommy’s wake forest loss.

Just happy for the win, that’s all.

It was NET/RPI 89/50 versus 39/16. We were the favorite when the line opened but as of today FSU was the favorite on 6 of 7 sports books listed on one site. We should have be a significant favorite but the line is also about who people will bet on and Clemson wasn’t getting enough action to stay the favorite. I’d love to know the last time Duke lost to back to back unranked teams at home. If we do that, it’ll be an impressive win.

I was a great win for three reasons:
1) FSU was 5-1 in the conference and we beat them at their place.

2) The win stopped the negative momentum of the recent losses.

3) Our two best players were out for considerable minutes due to foul trouble and the team stepped up.

I am not one of JK’s Brownell fanboys, but I will give Coach credit for switching things up a playing zone defense which seemed to work yesterday.

Yep. Crucial win at this point in the season after we dropped one that we shouldn't have.

I think it has a lot to do with this team in particular. There is no doubt this team is different than in recent years past. This team has the talent and depth to really be something special. The fans know it, but the recent slide has been soul crushing as usual. So to get back on the right side of things this win against a tough Fl St team at their house really sparks the fans back up.

People are probably calling it a great win because of both team’s very recent records. FL St had a lot of momentum, was playing very well and had a very good recent win/loss record. We had lost 4 of our last 5 and had looked very pedestrian while doing so. We had pretty much no momentum. Those trajectories along with us playing on the road makes the win look a little more significant than it should have.

Gonna take a bigger meltdown than a home loss vs GA tech for a mid season firing in my opinion.

Maybe losing to Louisville by 30.

Short of a major non-performance related issue, there is zero chance of Clemson firing Brownell midseason.

Zero chance Clemson fires a coach mid season for losing games.

and that's the way it should be.

CTB was not fired, he volunteered to step down. He did the honorable thing. Bowden received the buyout and Clemson got a fresh start without a messy ending.

If that was honorable what is Brownell grinding this out till the bitter end. Because Tommy, who overstated his welcome, was a FAR more accomplished coach. jstone D329

Clemson hasn't won at Duke since Rick Barnes did it his first year at Clemson in the 90s. It would be a monumental win. Only won there a few times. If Coach Brownell has wins over both at UNC and Duke for his career he will most likely get to retire at Clemson...

That would be really stupid to retain a coach just because they won on the road vs 2 teams.

It’s really stupid to retain a coach who has less accomplishments than a dumpster fire program like Ga Tech over the same period of time - but you know that.

It’s obvious your delusion knows no bounds as the only two things CTB accomplished was to hire Dabo and get all of tiger nation to send faxes so we could get invited to a crappy bowl game.

Carry on skippy…

Bowden did bring some national attention to Clemson simply because of his last name and he had the opportunity to play a few competitive games against his father. The “Bowden Bowl” was a catchy gimmick for a couple of years. We lived a long way from Clemson during those times and I remember it getting a pretty good bit of national coverage. Stood out because we didn’t get to see very many Clemson games at the time.

Still didn’t make him a good coach.

CTB owned your coots during his tenure. That was an accomplishment. Also bowl eligible every season he was here, though we had to forego 2004 due to the coots poor sportsmanship and total leadership collapse.

Now do Brownell.

Neither have any championships whatsoever. So we have to compare minor accomplishments.

Tommy Bowden restored a severely struggling program to respectability. Brownell reduced a respectable program to a level of inconsistency unmatched by any of his predecessors in the 64 team era (1989) other than Larry Shyatt. And those coaches, including Larry, did it with lesser facilities, smaller budgets relative to conference foes, and a more difficult conference due to expansion. So program direction definitively favors Bowden.

I wouldn’t compare bowl games to the NCAA tourney. But I think making the NIT or NCAA is a fair comparison. Bowden qualified his program for a bowl game every single year he was coach - 9/9. 100%. 10/10 if you want to count his partial final season. Brownell is 7/13 for making any preseason tournament. A miserable 54%.

Now that you have firmly established that you thought Bowden was a terrible coach (only achievements were an assistant coach hire and fans send faxes - per you), please let me know what in Brownell body of work is superior. I look forward to a well reasoned response.
