So, to put a final nail in the CFP Four Team Playoff Process, what we really can

take away is this:

Those "final" rankings before the Conference Championship Games mean absolutely nothing. They never really have. We were warned about this scenario the very first year of the Playoffs, when Urban Meyer lobbied his Ohio State team ahead of a TCU team that was ranked #4 going into the last week, and that WON their last game 55-3 over Iowa State.

Of course, they had to come up with some logic then, as well. In that case it was, the Big 12 didn't have a Championship Game. Never mind that NCAA rules wouldn't LET them have a Championship Game, as they did not have 12 members at the time. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. So, they used that logic to elevate Ohio State, which had won an absolute snoozer of a BIG Championship Game against a completely outclassed Wisconsin, 59-0. The refrain at the time? "Can't have a Playoff and leave out the BIG Champion." Sound in any way familiar?

And, say what you want about FSU being snubbed, in my mind Georgia has almost as big a beef as them. There have been other times when the SEC leading team was ranked #1, got beat in the SEC Championship Game, and STILL got in to the Playoffs. Yes, that was already GEORGIA. What was different this time? Texas owning that victory over Alabama, that's what. There is no way the Committee could even look its own self in the face if they put Alabama in, but left out the team that won its own conference championship and BEAT that Alabama team, soundly. Had that loss not been on Bama's resume, I firmly believe you would have seen two SEC teams in this thing again, and FSU was most likely still the recipient of an all time screw job.

When you come right down to it, say what you will, ESPN, and its illegitimate stepchild the SEC, run college football. The broadcast rights to the Playoffs are exclusively owned by...ESPN. So, should it really surprise anyone that an SEC team, their meal ticket, got in at the expense of an ACC team, which they are doing all they can to destroy?

Butt, I really do not have much, if any sympathy for the ACC. In this rapidly changing world of sports rights, conference affiliations, marketing, etc, ANY conference that locked itself into a deal for TWENTY YEARS was BEYOND stupid, bordering on insane. And, apparently, ESPN's lawyers were WAY smarter than any employed by the ACC, as no one has been able to find an out to break that deal, despite trying, REALLY hard.

And, guess what? The same Committee structure that brought you this fiasco this year, will be back in all its glory for the first round of the TWELVE team Playoffs next year. Four BYE spots up for grabs. Anybody want to wager the SEC gets AT LEAST two of those? I wouldn't bet against that at all. After all, ESPN has another whole season to contort the rankings and make it happen. The only way to avoid it is for FOX and the BIG to somehow get a whole lot more involved, and militant, than they have been. Either way, that non-acknowledged, misbegotten child, the ACC, will lose big time, in the end.

I'm hopeful that @dhood will have some of these discussions with Neff after the season. As it stands now, zero incentive for either of the big 2 to expand. Espn has zero interest or incentive to promote our products in the acc. There's got to be some type of clause that spells this out.

As for uga getting in. No chance. It was all about Texas win over Bama. And I disagree with you, Bama (as we did a few games) gave Texas 10 points off turnovers. A pick 6 and fg position in which Texas didn't need a first down to get the fg. So, no Texas didn't beat them soundly.

As I posted in bretfsu thread, as soon as Bama game ended, espn rolled out their big new promo ad. I've seen it about a dozen times already. It would have been a disaster roll-out if an sec was not in the playoffs.

Review the season, the records, the stats etc and you'll probably come to the same conclusion as I did. The committee had a clear cut, backed by stats, path to keep Texas out. Bama deserved to be in, fsu deserved to be in, Texas did not. Actually pretty clear cut.

All good points. As I said in my OP, I fully believe the ONLY reason Texas got

put in was because of that win over Bama, however it was accomplished. That was an inconvenient stumbling block that the Committee had to acknowledge.

Michigan is tainted. Bama getting in is tainted. Texas getting in is marginal at best. So, that leaves me to root for Washington, which is a probable loser considering what the Pac-12 has done in the Playoffs in the past.

Those rankings mean a lot. If FSU woukd have shown a pulse on offense they would have been in.

That Bama vs UGA game was UGA's playoff game in my opinion. They lost the "first round" and should be eliminated and this concept should have been incorporated into the system to avoid the loser still getting into the CFP. You can't get any better than head-to-head elimination.

I believe that right now Bama can beat FSU.

Dec 5, 2023, 10:34 AM

That's my opinion considering the circumstances. I also believe that Bama will win it all. That again, is my opinion.

I respect your opinion and everyone else's even if it's only a matter of their opinion. I have one question for you but first what I know about the POC. Imo, by opinion I cried the loudest the first time they put two SEC teams in the playoff. Frankly, those were some of the best games we've seen when they met at the final showdown. The POC was justified that year because the 'first team out,' Bama, won it all.

So what are you going to say if Bama wins it all?

I would say congratulations to them. I think they are certainly CAPABLE of

winning it all. So were probably a handful of other teams that got left out.

Sooner or later, this scenario was BOUND to happen. When the Playoff was first set up with FOUR teams, and FIVE "Power Five" conferences, it was as inevitable as Thanos.
