Similarities To Ed O and Danny Fords Departure

When Ed O was forced out at LSU it reminded me of Danny Ford's forced departure a little bit.
It's been my feeling (and others) that Danny Ford was a tobacco chewing good old boy that wasn't a "refined" politician to rub elbows with the fat cat boosters. They wanted someone that was a politician and ED O and Danny Ford are not those types of people.
Brian Kelly is the clean cut politician that can schmooze and put in front of a camera and not look or sound like a good old boy.
All I can say is it didn't work out too well when Clemson wanted a politician and I'll be interest to see if Brian Kelly can make it work.

the BOT and administration over who had more control, power, whatever you want to call it. It also didn't help that Danny either couldn't, or lacked the inclination, to stop the postgame "Hundred Dollar Handshakes" from big boosters.
While he was never officially personally connected (at least as far as I ever read) with such NCAA infractions, they DID happen on his watch.

Add in that SMU just got the death penalty... and we were the last program to run that far afoul, especially after a national championship with at least two recent major issues (basketball/football).
At that time folks were taking a constant grey-area rub against the "potential" of NCAA attention seriously. Danny was leading us in some very dark grey area (again) there and already had his knuckled whacked from paying players a few years before. SMU's "issues" first came to light in the early 80s so basically the same timeline from Pell to Danny but SMU did not even try to clean up. We kinda did but Danny was pushing in the wrong direction We had 2 years of probation in post 82 and also in 1975 for basketball. Basically we were two strikes in and Danny wasn't listening.
Folks don't really realize that I ain't joking when I say that the Basketball HC #1 mission is to NOT bring attention to the football program....
That being said, getting rid of Danny might have cause a serious decline but it could have been worse with Danny if the NCAA wanted to do an SMU part II

Danny was forced out because he walked into a party on campus and found his daughter with one of the football players who was of color and Danny put his hands on the player 5 day's later gone. That's the real reason he got canned. All was kept out of the media. Sorry I've never posted in my life but just saw this and wanted to reply.

I was in school then, and the story going around then was that Danny's daughter got caught with Donnell Bruce, a basketball player under Cliff Ellis. Coincidentally, at the same time Donnell Bruce was seen in street clothes at basketball games with his face pretty beat up. Word was a couple of the offensive linemen paid a visit to Mr. Bruce, and considering the physical evidence I saw on him at the basketball games, I believed the story to be true.

I don't remember Danny taking shirtless selfies in the bed with a co-ed half his age, or hitting on the pregnant wife of a trustee.
Other than that, they're identical

You would be spot on if Danny also covered up sexual assault, was parading his girlfriend's and their children around at practices, and was hitting on the pregnant wives of BOT members.
Coach O is not some "aw shucks" good ole boy.
He is a scumbag that happens to speak the language of the locals.

The ONLY similarity is both left after winning National Championship a couple of years earlier. Period. No other comparison.

Danny's last season was 1989, which is slightly more than a couple of years after 1981. But other than that, why ruin a good story with the facts.

Danny lost the job because of a power struggle, as others have pointed out.
Orgeron lost his job because anyone with half a brain could tell he's a moron that caught lightening in a bottle one year with his staff and roster, especially at QB.
Now, you can be a moron in some respects in Louisiana and still be successful. The women and what-not...that is not a problem to many folks there. I say this as someone who lived in Baton Rouge when Edwin Edwards, who no one doubted was corrupt, was elected governor of the state for the second time.
Also remember they've kept a basketball coach who as been recorded discussing his "strong a$$ offers" to recruits.
But if you're a moron that doesn't win enough football games, you will not be the football coach at LSU.
In my opinion, Brian Kelly's lack of a colorful personality will be a challenge on the bayou...but if he wins, LSU fans will put up with that.

Ripper, I lived in NOLa and it is a different country. Unless Kelly wins big immediately he'll be gone in less than 3 years.

Ripper and kpttiger I lived there too, for 20+ years. How did so many of us get from God's country in the upstate to that place? Our daughter and her husband still live there - she went to LSU, he to Mississippi State. We moved back here four years ago - we were ready to come home.
Their fans are truly a different breed. When we moved out there you'd have thought they'd invented football to hear them talk, and they hadn't won an NC since the 50s at that time. I agree with kpttiger too - they'll give him three years, tops. And Kelly definitely won't fit into their culture well. Oddly enough, greasy Coach O was the perfect fit - he just couldn't keep his pants zipped.

My dad has always said Danny Ford was was run off because he got too big for his britches." Something about him telling the school what was what, and they didn't like that.
I've never looked into it further than that.

Ummm, no.
Three reasons Ed won the National Championship. Burrow, Brady, and Aranda. After those three and other players went to the NFL, he just wasn’t that good of a coach. And as stated above, he couldn’t keep his pants zipped and everyone knew it thanks to social media.
Ford was fired because, yes, he did some slightly shady things as far as recruiting, but back then, who wasn’t doing that?? But main reason was that the BOT didn’t like him doing his job and succeeding, and asking for more support to take the program to the next level, akin to Bama. He and the AD at the time didn’t get along either. The BOT was afraid of the almighty NCAA and the Asheshe.

Yup you re kinda right save the "succeeding part",
Toss in that SMU just got the death penalty. The NCAA was willing to use the nuclear option then. And if Danny kept on, we would have likely been SMU not Alabama. Even Alabama was getting NCAA attention too Their 1995 infractions were the result of actions in 1992. They did not recover from that until Saban.

Well, I say he was succeeding given that he led the Tigers to a National Championship and winning in the ACC. Then he was fired and Ken Hatfield happened.

I am not arguing that he wasn't successful.
But the comment about the BOT being angry about him doing his job and succeeding is the off part.
Basically, Danny was told to cut the undermining crap and stop risk NCAA infractions. Then he went along and continued it and mouth off publicly to the boosters. He already had his NCAA violation, we were looking at more on his watch (as well as Pell). Heck, Danny even kinda agreed afterwards that it was kinda his fault.
The NCAA just snuffed SMU and we were next. Ironically Alabama was *next* by 1995 for the same crud. It took Saban to fix that. Do you think we would have gotten the SMU or the Alabama treatment? Hatfield had to clean up. At that point, I think Arky was one of the few team NOT on probation in the SWC moving to SEC. West was a mistake but Hatfield was unthanked janitor dealing with the unhappiness post Ford.
