Safeties/Nickel next year

Starters: Venables (rsSR), Covil (JR), and Barnes (SO)

Depth: Griffin (rsSO), Webb (rsFR), Billings (rsFR), Jones (FR), Dixon (FR), Hampton (FR)

Talented group. Very little experience.

Venables has high football IQ. Covil is a thumper. We all know what Barnes is capable of. Griffin flashed some this year. That's a good 4 to start with.

I liked Webb (can play both safety spots) and Billings (ballhawk) out of high school. Need both to take a big step forward in their development.
Jones (hyper-athlete) has high end potential and Hampton (diverse playmaker) is criminally underrated. I think both of them could develop into really good players. Dixon (solid) probably needs a year to develop.

Terrell, Lewis, Feagin, and Gipson could all see time at the nickel as well.

A lot of people will quickly jump to the portal as an option. I get it.

But I'm not sure safety makes the most sense just yet. We have 9 dudes still. And I really like the athleticism in that room. Mickey Conn has recruited pretty well.

Conn has had great recruiting classes the past 2 years and this next one

appears to be another good one. We have quality and quantity at safety for the first time in quite a while.

We love to criticize Dabo hiring friends and/or former players. I'm one of those people.

Mickey Conn is increasingly looking like a good hire though. He deserves more credit for what he's done with our safeties.

Who do you have as our starters for the Gator?

Mickens and Philips might still play, so them starting at safety with Barnes at the nickel.

Venables and Griffin would be next man up.

Griffin over Venables is a possibility.

I like Griffin a lot, expecting him to take a step foward

Hope Tyler Venables is fully recovered from his hip injury. That's the main concern I have about him. Like the kid when he's on the field, has a nose for the ball.

Venables will probably get less snaps than Griffin next year.

Wonder if they have ever considered moving Lukus to safety? He seems to fit more of that role from my view on the couch.

I think Lukus will start opposite of Terrell next year.

You could be right and I'm pulling for the kid being an upstater.

However, he needs to make a leap. Thought he would do that this year.

Know he got hurt but when he played, he never got his head around and just seemed to be caught out of position a lot.

Have you done CBS yet ? How much does losing Pride hurt ?
I think after Wiggins he would've been our next shut down CB

Pride hurts a little from a depth perspective. But I don't think he was going to start for us.

Terrell is a definite starter with true shutdown potential like his older brother. Lukus and Lewis will compete for the other starting CB spot. Lukus has the potential, but has dealt with nagging injuries for 2 years. If he can put it altogether, he has All-ACC type of potential. I loved Lewis out of high school and believe he can be really good as well. I like starting next year with those 3.

After that, we lack experience...

Myles Oliver was a developmental project when we signed him, now he'll be in year 3. Branden Strozier has impressive physical traits. We need at least one of them to contribute next year.

Corian Gipson has a chance to be an impact CB as a freshman, much like Terrell and Lewis were this year. Tavoy Feagin isn't the best athlete, but he has solid technique and instincts for a high schooler. I could see him finding a home at the nickel spot.

I'm not sure a portal CB is necessary because I like our top 3 guys. We need 2 guys to emerge between Oliver, Strozier, Gipson, and Feagin. We do need an 8th CB, IMO. We can afford to sign a developmental guy though.

Thanks, I like Terrell but he looks undersized. We had multiple guys that looked pretty good when they got in late vs the coots. Might be the best position group on the team after the Dline once the dust settles
