heffner broke that about an hour ago on the local radio

Jul 12, 2012, 10:03 AM

no surprise whatsoever

yep if he wants it he has earned it I'd say

Good for him. I hope he doesn't have a positive impact on

Jul 12, 2012, 10:11 AM

the rest of their sports like he did with Baseball. I would have to move if they won anything meaningful in Football or Basketball.

Idiotic post. Why would Leggett give a rats #### about Tanner leaving?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It will be interesting to see....

Jul 12, 2012, 10:17 AM

if Ray Tanner allows Spurrier to walk all over him like Hyman did and if Chad Holbrook can sustain the level of sucess that Tanner coached baseball teams experienced.

Holbrook, known as a very good hitting coach and recruiter, to my knowledge has zero experience as a head coach at any level.

Holbrook has

Jul 12, 2012, 10:21 AM

done more running this program that most people realize.

That's not to say Tanner hasn't - he has of course. But Holbrook has been more than a right hand man since he's arrived in Columbia.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

sure he has but it's different sitting in the main chair vs.

Jul 12, 2012, 10:23 AM

being his right hand man...he's making the decisions now...going to be an adjustment.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh I agree. it's always an adjustment when

Jul 12, 2012, 10:28 AM

something like a coaching change happens.

It will be nice to have Ray Tanner on campus should any questions/advice be needed.

I think it's actually a good situation to be in - especially with holbrook knowing Tanner hired him in the first place.

The program can only go down some. There is no possible way to keep it at the level of playing for a national title 3 years in a row. So some drop off is expected - for common sense reasons.

The main thing will be to continue to make NCAA regionals and hopefully be hot at the right time. That's what Tanner has always said and that's Holbrook's challenge.

Holbrook has built this team recruiting. It's his turn to run it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed...he's got him as a resource but has the trust

Jul 12, 2012, 10:32 AM

of his boss to allow him to do his job without intervention

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it would be much different - if

Jul 12, 2012, 10:35 AM

Tanner wasn't the one that hired Holbrook. But since he did- Holbrook is in a very good position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed....he hired him....knows him...trust him so that

Jul 12, 2012, 10:36 AM

creates a great environment. Now Frank Martin is in a different position all together.

Re: agreed....he hired him....knows him...trust him so that

Jul 12, 2012, 10:38 AM

He is - but he's going to get time -and I think Martin has a lot of Tanner's personality - much more so than most coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: agreed....he hired him....knows him...trust him so that

Jul 12, 2012, 5:38 PM

have you ever heard of a man named dean smith? he stayed on at unc after his coaching days, and things didn't always turn-out so good. also, i'm not sure if spurlid will enjoy answering to a baseball coach, even if has publicly stated support, it's easy to say it ,but ego is a funny thing,it will be hard to actually do it. and one more thing, great asst. coaches don't always make the transistion to great hc's. just a few things to occupy that mind of yours during down-time.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not doubting you....

Jul 12, 2012, 10:39 AM [ in reply to Holbrook has ]

but that doesn't change the fact that he has ZERO experience as a head coach at any level.

He is also a UNC alum and if he is successful at $CU, it will be interesting to see he would leave for UNC should Mike Fox retire or resign.

Guessing that the SC baseball program has more $

Jul 12, 2012, 10:42 AM

than the NC baseball program to hold onto quality coaches...this goes back to the SEC and their bank accounts vs. others.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tough boss for Holbrook...I am sure the relationship is

Jul 12, 2012, 10:19 AM

Re: Tough boss for Holbrook...I am sure the relationship is

Jul 12, 2012, 10:26 AM

always tough when your boss had the job he gives you. you gets lots of input. losts

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Tanner

Jul 12, 2012, 10:30 AM

will do that.

Tanner has talked many times about what it was like being a young head coach (28 years old).

Tanner has always given his assistants tons of freedom.

Tanner will have a lot of other things to work on - I think he'll be available should advice be needed- and it will. But I'm not so sure Tanner himself will be one giving a lot of advice without being asked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tanner needs to do nothing...just being there will create

Jul 12, 2012, 11:01 AM

added pressure on Holbrook...especially if things slide, even for a season. Fans will create that pressure.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Congrats to him. Well earned. Of course, I hope he's

Jul 12, 2012, 10:30 AM

not as good at being an AD as he is at being a baseball coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

I like Ray but being an AD is very different from coaching

Jul 12, 2012, 10:31 AM

Will be interesting to see how he handles it. I am sure he will good with PR and pressing the flesh but wonder how he will work with Spurrier and Martin. Both those guys strike me as a$$s and prima donnas. I give it 2-3 years max before at least one of them blows a gasket and leaves - whether by their choice or someone else's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think

Jul 12, 2012, 10:33 AM

Ray Tanner backs down from anyone - as everyone should know.

Almost all head football coaches are prima donnas- just in different ways. Spurrier clearly is no exception.

As long as people do their job- it works well.

But Tanner is going to give all the coaches a lot of freedom. That's his style- and that's what all coaches want.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

neither of them are long term employees anyway

Jul 12, 2012, 10:34 AM [ in reply to I like Ray but being an AD is very different from coaching ]

Martin won't stay long because if he wins he'll get another job.....if he loses he'll move on...Spur is more do with his age.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mostly agree

Jul 12, 2012, 10:37 AM

althought Spurrier has been a long term employee already - working on his 8th season.

Martin - I think - would stick around for 5-6 years - and if he wins- that's fine.

If a coach wins - he makes the job more attractive for the next coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed

Jul 12, 2012, 10:40 AM

Just meant it's not likely that Spurrier is around for 8 more given his age.

It's tough for any school in SC to hold onto a basketball coach if he's successful. We don't care about it enough and don't support it.

On the contrary, promoting "one of the guys" will make for a much better working environment, than bringing a stranger in from across the country.

Now we know why Chad Holbrook never left. Tennessee threw

Jul 12, 2012, 10:39 AM

Fort Knox at him and, he still didn't budge. It's no coincidence that So Car's baseball program became elite when he arrived.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Now we know why Chad Holbrook never left. Tennessee threw

Jul 12, 2012, 12:10 PM

Actually, virtually all of the players from the first title year, and most of those from the second, were recruited by Jim Toman and a few by Monte Lee. Holbrook may be a great recruiter, but the nucleus of those teams were recruited by someone else. As far as a great hitting coach, their team BA has really not been great the last few years. They've just pitched incredibly well and gotten hits when they needed them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Now we know why Chad Holbrook never left. Tennessee threw

Jul 12, 2012, 12:25 PM

Chad has a reputation of being a superb recruiter. But, Carolina has always had very good baseball talent. The thing about Chad is that he is a great game day coach. Ray leaned on Chad to run the program because it was common knowledge that Ray would be promoted to AD.

Re: Ray Tanner new Coot AD, out as baseball coach

Jul 12, 2012, 10:48 AM

He may have stepped in "it". Why leave a cush baseball job to take over an athletic department that is about to be hammered with NCAA sanctions. Time will tell.

He was assistant AD at NCST. My understaning is that he was mainly involved in scheduling. I would be very surprised if they didn't bring in someone like Brad Edwards to help him with full AD duties untill he becomes fully acclimated to the job.
Actually he is the only coach they had who I thought was a nice guy. Good luck to him !!
