Polk Salad berries...and other childhood cures.

Was out on the tractor yesterday and noticed a stand of Polk Salad covered in the deep purple berries. I was reminded of my childhood when, at this time of year, we children had to gather and swallow Polk berries as follows:
Day One - One berry
Day Two - Two berries
Day Three - Three berries...and on up to nine berries on Day Nine. Then, you backed the dose down one berry each day until you were back at zero.
The sequence was necessary to build up a resistance to the poison berries. Repeat: POISON!!!!
Allegedly, this was to keep us kids from getting boils (risens). I have to say, we didn't have any.
Did anyone here take Polk Berries or similar herbal treatments?

concoction of whiskey, honey and lemon juice. Hey, you can't cough if you're unconscious, right? Plus all the Vicks Vaporub stuff crammed up my nose and smeared on my chest... I could still taste it 3 days later.
Best cure for a bee sting was a wad of Aunt Geneva's chewing tobacco. Suck the pain right out of it. But left a nasty brown stain.

We used to eat the greens (polk salad), but always heard the berries
were poisonous. I guess that was incorrect. Also tried rabbit tobacco a few times, but didn't care for it.
