Only 14 schools have ever won back to back National Titles

Only 14 schools have ever won back to back National Championships in college football
And only 1 school has a chance to do it this year.
Pretty impressive list: Princeton, Yale, Harvard (all in 1800's) Army (during WWII) California and Minnesota (the outliers)
The rest are a "who's who" of college football: Michigan, Alabama, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Texas, Nebraska
We might as well give it a try

Got most of these

I missed on Pitt and Washington. Washington has the longest unbeaten streak at 63 games (59 wins and 4 ties), thought they might have been one of the fourteen. I forgot about Cal's history also. Got all 3 Ivy League schools and Army. Thanks for the trivia question.

The list I saw shows two and three schools claiming the title a year for many years. This is how places like Bama claim so many.

I'd put MSU in that first part of your grouping ...they haven't really ever been considered elite in the modern era .

Tigers should have had B2B from 15 & 16. They should be looking a a possible three peat for 17.

I dunno. I still wonder if we would've won in 2016 without

the extra motivation from falling short in 2015. Many teams that return a good core of players from a national title winning team don't perform at the same level the following year.

That is entirely possible as well. We will never know.

It's crazy that Clemson would already be on that list if the better team won every game

I am not sure any team has "won" back to back titles. The media use to pick the teams, not an actual win like the last few years. The has been a lot of bias over all these years!

I can't believe 2015 slipped away from us. We had a better team than Bama.

In the era of the AP poll only 6 schools have done it.

Didn't know there were NC's in the 1800'S. pretty sure Heisman would have won an NC at CU and GT if there have been any meaningful measure in the pre WW1 seasons.
