I was all over the Mediterranean on the USS Independance CV-62. Near Israel, every morning would hear....from somewhere in the Mediterranean the voice of peace.

I was on board The USS Jesse L.Brown, (The subject of the Movie, and book "Devotion"). After nine months we were winding down a Med Cruise. As I recall we were at sea, and the only way we got any news was by the Radiomen. They passed the word, I thought it was a joke, because everyone knew that Kryptonite was the only thing that could kill The King of Rock and Roll.

To me it was one of those events that I’ll always remember where I was when I heard the news. I was more of the Beatles, stones generation but Elvis was “The King”. He is missed.

So was I. He was already into being "Fat Elvis" by the time

I really paid him much attention. At that time, all the capes and one piece jumpsuits was way too Liberace for me.

Plus, there was something wrong with his lip.

I was the Legal Officer at Naval Station, Charleston SC, and my Legal Assistant, Betty Chinners (who, incidentally was the organist at her Methodist Church in a small community which has a named exit on I-26 near Ridgeville), had always had the kind of love for The King that only a middle-aged woman can have. I had made a brig run that morning and had not heard the news. When I got to the office, Betty was in a deep funk. My Legalman Chief Petty Officer LOVED to poke fun at Betty about her love for The King and even death did not temper his sick sense of humor. He was unmerciful in his teasing of Betty and especially how The King had died, and, consequently, Betty was making life miserable for the rest of the office of some 25 souls, civilian and military, officer and enlisted, male and female. I was not a giant Elvis fan, though I did like several of his songs, particularly the latter ones - but like him or not, Chief's teasing of Betty had to end, to prevent bloodshed - so he and I had a little meeting - I promised him that he would not have duty every weekend for the remainder of the month if he eased up on Betty. He agreed, I did, and we all lived to see a better tomorrow than the Day Elvis Died. R/TLM

That's impressive

1

that you have 17 posts and joined Tnet almost 23 years ago. You need to pick up the paste.

I guess I'll tell my Elvis story. I was 16 and our family was at Edisto Beach staying in a house we rented for about $200 for a week. My brother and I were at the Pavilion playing air hockey while people were skating and music was playing. Suddenly, the music stopped and the DJ made the announcement about Elvis dying and everyone gasped simultaneously. Then the DJ played The Manhattans "Kiss and Say Goodbye" and skating and playing resumed. I've told my son BigAl that story at least a dozen times and he's tired of hearing it lol.

Well, planned or not, it kinda went like this:
1) I have been a member of IPTAY since I could pay the dues by my own earnings (1964)
2) I subscribed to the Orange & White at the very outset and have remained subscribed continuously since then in all of its various offerings
In short, I have had ample opportunity to engage in multiple Tiger fora for over 60 years, BUT

A) on 1/1/23, I retired for the fourth time - I spent 21 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy; with purchased credited service because of state and federal employment, I retired through the S.C. retirement system; I became eligible for Sociable Insecurity at 66; and, I decided that 76 was old enough to keep paying taxes for someone else's benefit, hence the retirement from private industry on 1/1/23
B) I have been blessed with having survived 13 surgeries of two hours or greater, and stage 4 cancer, twice, SO

I just have not had time to engage in one of my favorite activities - sharing good times and fond memories with Tiger fans near and far!!! But the time is getting more and more available, so watch out!! R/TLM

I'm sorry!!! I did state that rather awkwardly. It was not a promise (to his benefit) that I would reassign his already-assigned duty days to others, but, rather, an implied (but never stated directly) threat that I would reassign the already-assigned duty days of others to him if he didn't back off.
Truth be told, the other non-coms would have gladly taken on his duty days in order to keep him off Betty's back - they were catching the brunt of her attitude caused by him; and he would not have minded taking more weekend duty - he could stay in the duty shack with fresh linen every night, and eat at the CPO Club, instead of at home. Not the toughest threats I ever made. R/TLM

sitting at the intersection of White Horse Rd and Anderson Rd in my 72 Nova. Me & my buddies were stunned. Yeah, we were more about Floyd & Zep etc at that time... but Elvis was The Man. Period. It hurt. No death of a musical artist bothered me that much until John Lennon.

I was working at Carowinds amusement park right before my junior year in high school. I was working the motorized cars that went around a track on rail, and I was sweeping the walkway outside of the entrance, when they announced over the PA park-wide. Everybody just stopped in their tracks and looked at each other in disbelief. Very surreal moment. Then my supervisor yelled at me for standing still and I got over it.

I distinctly remember thinking to myself: If Elvis can die, that means that anyone can die. :(

And yes, I was young but way old enough to have already figured that out. It's just that it was such unbelievable news.
