Obscene Pay for College Coaches

5

Oct 31, 2023, 4:56 PM

It seems to me that most of the hate for Dabo comes from his obscene salary. And that's understandable. $11 million a year to coach college football is ridiculous. In fact, pretty much all major program college coach salaries are ridiculous.

Since college football is supposed to be an amateur sport, shouldn't the coaches also be amateurs?

On the contrary, economics says that the coaches should be the highest paid employees of most schools. A few years back when Coastal Carolina won the CWS an economist estimated that it could have $100 million impact on the university. What do you think the economic impact would be for winning the CFP? The number of applicants at Clemson skyrocketed during our run, also. That means that it has had a huge educational impact as well.

Dabo needs to remember that dealing with all of the fans, not just the happy ones, is part of his job, but the level of his salary is justifiable.

1

Oct 31, 2023, 5:01 PM

Same as athletes in general. If it were too much people would quit paying for cable and to go to games. But it’s not happening so it demands a price. Any artificial ceiling on a price is anticapitalist. Are you a socialist? Again I agree it’s too much but market drives it and we/Clemson were/are willing to pay for it.

All work and no play makes OldSchoolFootball a dull boy. In a perfect world teachers, policemen, firemen, and the military would be our highest paid employees. Even in that world we would need entertainment or we would burn out. I know first hand that you can only work 100 hours a week for so long. Re: Obscene Pay for College Coaches

If you look at how much Clemson football brings in to the school and the Upstate, Dabo's salary is not out of line. We, as taxpayers, only pay a very small part of the salary because it comes from outside sources like sponsors. Compare coaches salaries to what professional athletes make and it is totally in line. Take Scottie Scheffler who won over $21 million this year on the PGA tour and consider who benefits and coaching salaries are in line.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Obscene Pay for College Coaches

I think your argument, though framed around economics, is that you disagree with today’s societal value system. Mainly around worshipping celebrities and athletes. The reality of it is people will always pay for what entertains them above all else because they are constantly chasing happiness.

Examples are a donor that gives 5,000 dollars a year to Iptay to provide a scholarship for some unknown person but their own child has to borrow 100k for a degree. Or the people that spent 2,000 to see Taylor Swift while drowning in credit card debt. Reality is that people aren’t going to change. Dave Ramsey is trying to help.

However, the simple fact on your economic question is math. Dabo’s ROI to Clemson is extremely high. Universities are no longer places of higher education but simply Asset Management companies. Dabo has allowed for a significant increase in the AUM for CU.

Ita TV... Has nothing to do with Clemson really, just so happens to have the name but big time college football isn't really amateurish in any way and hasn't been for a long time. In so many ways those kids have more amenities than they would in the NFL... The football program has made a crap load of money for the university itself and is the best publicity that they could ask for. Kids from all over come. In part bc of the football prominence.

Athletic departments make insane amounts more than they used to even 20 yrs ago. It's crazy to think but it's all market based.

Also I don't think Clemson actually pays him that much .. only a base from the school... Others would know though.

"The football program has made a crap load of money for the university itself and is the best publicity that they could ask for. Kids from all over come."

So Dabo makes it harder for South Carolinians to go to Clemson. And you think that's a good thing?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, it is a good thing.

Nov 1, 2023, 1:08 AM

Clemson should always strive to become the best university it can be. That includes continually improving its academic reputation and the caliber of students it accepts.

Provided that a specified number of students are from South Carolina, it is fulfilling its mission as a public school.

Clemson was never intended to be, nor should it be, a school that anyone can attend. We already have plenty of those schools in SC, including the one in Columbia.

1

With that said, that salary comes with high expectations. Dabo has failed to meet those expectations three years in a row now, and part of the job entails being prepared for the criticism that might come with it.

Dabo clearly has a lot of work to do in that area.

18 percent of the revenue goes to the players. That includes the cost to cover medical expenses.

38 percent to administration. Thats were the fat is. Seems like a lot of no show jobs. Great work if you can get it

Sometimes it includes the value you bring just like all the other high paid coaches.
