Nolan Turner...

I hate seeing some of our own fans criticizing his coverage of “elite” receivers. Usually it is a case of him trying to fix a missed assignment by another player. He’s not perfect. Any player could have a video or GIF posted of them missing a tackle or getting caught out of position peeking in the backfield. Case in point, AJ Terrell versus Alabama in the national championship and then AJ Terrell versus LSU and the national championship. Him having a bad day covering Ja’Marr Chase didn’t stop him from being the 16th pick of the NFL draft in round one. Those saying Nolan can’t tackle sound like idiots. Never mind he’s the leading tackler from last season. I’ll leave you with this..,
How many “Elite” NFL safeties has Lamar Jackson made look silly trying to tackle him in the open field? Check out the 2:38:51 mark of this video and true freshman Nolan Turner (5 years ago) taking down Lamar Jackson in the open field preventing a TD.

I think we just recognize that he’s not an NFL safety. And most fans would like to have a starting safety that will get drafted one day. The more NFL talent, the better your team usually is. That’s all.

Most fans would like to have a starting [insert any position including holder and long snapper here] that will get drafted one day. I would love to have a pet unicorn. But you work with what you have. Turner does have several all american honors - but that doesn't necessarily translate to the NFL. That said, I would not be shocked if he gets drafted or makes a team as an undrafted free agent.
Rooting for the 6th year player.
And my favorite Turner play (although it is more of a right place / right time thing when Fields and his receiver were not on the same page). However, those who win the victories can write the story! https://theclemsoninsider.com/2019/12/29/turner-saves-the-day-clemson-headed-back-to-the-national-championship-game/

Nolan Turner and James Skalski are exceptional football players and the backbone of our defense. Will they play on Sunday, probably not. They are essentially coaches in training and I expect both of them to be GA positions shortly after next season and are part of Dabo's plan to fill the coaching vacancies for when Elliot, Streeter and the other coaches move on to head coaching positions. They both will get their shots as undrafted free agents, but NFL is all about the 40 and measurables. What they lack in god given speed and talent, they more than make up for in their ability to know where the play is going and be there when the ball arrives.
Go Tigers !!!

I would say that there’s a clear separation between Skalski and Turner though. Skalski is a good college LB, Nolan is an average college safety. It’s okay to admit that.

He’s an average college safety. There are dozens of safeties that are better than Nolan Turner. Let’s try and be objective about this.

I get what your saying, but he's actually improved during his time here. See PFF 2021 pre-season analysis:
SAFETY First-Team: Nolan Turner, Clemson
Turner was great as a reserve in 2018 and 2019, with a two-year 80.5 PFF grade across 971 snaps. He took on a full-time starting job in his fifth year in 2020 and maintained his admirable play en route to a 79.1 PFF grade. There was one notable improvement: tackling. He missed over 25% of his career attempts prior to 2020 but cut that rate to 6.5% last season.
Second-Team: Kenderick Duncan Jr., Louisville Third-Team: Deon Jones, Boston College Honorable Mention: Jammie Robinson, Florida State

Sure, he’s obviously improved. That’s not really up for debate. It’s just that most fans would rather see the starting 11 occupied by guys with NFL futures. Just ask yourself if you’d rather have a starting safety that will get drafted or a safety that won’t.

You are basically calling out a college kid for being inconsistent... which is the college game in a nutshell. The only consistency here is how bad South Carolina can be and how underachieving Jawja makes of their roster.
You have a consistent, high-level players and NFL folks lose their mind. He would be a transcendent player. That is what made the likes of TL so unreal. Heck, consistency made Renfrow. TL had 17 career INTs - spanning 3 seasons, DW4 had 17 in his final NC winning season. Back to Turner, there is a consistency issues (keep in mind that good OCs will find a way to stretch his position to make their paycheck), but there is a lot of absolute drive-stopping playmaking.

Surely you noticed this slow white boy with no athletic ability come from the OTHER FREAKING SIDE OF THE FIELD on that play, that although he didn’t make the tackle, he slowed him down enough and changed his direction to where his teammate was able to tackle him? Go back and look at how much ground he covered to CATCH UP with him. Do you even Football?

I don't think Nolan turner is slow. In fact I think he has pretty good speed. I'm one of the few tigers fans that think he'll get drafted. Hes a smart player and has enough athletic ability to play at the next level.

Not all have to be 1st round NFL caliber to be GREAT in college. The Tiger list of those guys is long.
I am a fan of Nolan and believe Tigers are less when he is not on the field.

he is a Tiger and starting safety. I hope he has a break-out last season and gets 10 INTS, gets 200 tackles, and 15 PBUs.
All video clips aside though, can you tell me with a straight face that he will get drafted? BTW, I hope to God he does! But if not, then why so?
No one is saying that he's not a solid player, but safety recruiting and play can certainly be upgraded. It's currently the weak link in our defense.
Look, I get it. He's an FCA guy, a great kid, touching story about his father and Dabo. People are just looking at his play objectively through the years, nothing to do with him as a person.

No you do not get it. Only 2% of college football players get drafted. Turner has a shot based on how he is graded on film and his statistics. There are several 4.6 -40 safeties playing in the NFL. if you do not play football smart, speed just gets you further out of position quicker.

i do not take it personally. I have no reason to take it personally. Nolan may take it personally. His teammates may take it personally. They think a lot of him voted permanent team captain. Has been defensive player of the game many times. So yes, his teammates might take it personally.

Did Ben Boulware or Kendall Joseph get drafted? Nope but they were both great college players who have NC rings and were key players for us. Turner and James S fit the same mold

It's pretty clear here some people aren't objective and look at this situation as what they hope it to be instead of what it is. People like someone and they talk themselves into thinking they're better than they are, instead of recognizing their limitations. Nolan Turner is a solid safety. Thats what he is. He's not awesome. His lack of athleticism, as good as it may be, isn't on the same level as one handed catches by Ross or flipping onto your feet by Bresee. Thats the level of athletes Clemson has at most positions. Doesn't mean he sucks, doesn't mean he won't get a shot at the NFL. It means if a true number one receiver for a championship caliber team gets with him one on one, Clemson is not in a good defensive position. Be that a faster, quicker safety, you're in a better position. You guys are literally trying to argue against having more speed on the field. It makes no sense. I realize everyone on the field can't be a 5 star, but we can get some more athletic guys.

Ok, please state your objective evaluation of Nolan Turner in carrying out his duties as safety on the Clemson football team. Please be objective and specific. Do not use generalities like - he does not do a back roll flip to his feet when getting off the ground or he intercepts the ball with two hands instead of one. Be objective. Explain how with all his deficiencies he leads the team in total tackles and interceptions and has been selected defensive player of the game numerous times. Please be objective and specific. We are waiting.

Speed and athletic ability do not top the list in determining success as a football player evidently. The leading rusher of all time Emmitt Smith ran a 4.57 and a 4.71 40 yd dash at the combine. The leading receiver of all time Jerry Rice ran a 4.7 40 yd. dash. Considered by many the greatest safety of all time, and by his own admission not athletically gifted, Ronnie Lott ran a 4.65 40 yd dash. We are waiting.

I would argue that Turners play the last two years was equal to or better than Kearse and Green’s last year at Clemson. Both of those guys played great at times. They got beat some in their final year. If OJ Howard was covered in the first Bama game, Dabo would have three Championships. They were both drafted high because they were tall and fast. In the case of Green- elite fast. Turners performance on the field at Clemson stacks up favorably to our recent safeties who were drafted
