Opening game jitters.

19

Jul 6, 2023, 8:46 AM

Every fan has them, or if they don't they should. No one knows for sure how good or bad a team actually is. There are always a few surprises in opening games.

Last year Marshall beat Notre Dame as an example.

How good is Duke? Was last year a fluke? Is there QB as good as being hyped?

How good is Cade? Is he SC good or is he Tennessee bad? How much difference will Riley make? How soon can the offense learn his system? Is the defense really gonna improve? Can the front 7 dominate and destroy Duke's OL? Are the DBs improved significantly, or will Duke be able to burn them?

Everybody, including me, thinks we know the answers. But, there is still uncertainty until the spot the ball.

I heard a football coach say, years ago, "If you want to upset somebody, play them in September. You can surprise them in September. You can't in November. There are no upsets in November. By then coaches have plenty of film and know how to best attack and defend. Fans may think there are upsets, but coaches know who the better team is when they walk into the stadium."

Me? What do I think? 45-17, Clemson. But, it's opening game. I'll still be jittery. (I won't even try to explain my jitter level when thinking about FSU/LSU.)

Long as we win the game 1-0 or 7-6, a win is a win!

True as far as the W/L column goes but if we win a close game vs Dook, the T-Net old man cult will lose their minds

Sadly, style points seem to matter more now than ever if you're not in the secheat. If we don't stomp opponents, the win will seem unimpressive to the pundits. Also, I want us to dominate, but I do want us to dominate while still getting lots of playing time in for the backups. Quality depth matters down the road. We'll find out in a few weeks.

The old man Tiger fans generally have a better perspective than that. It’s the newer, instant gratification, sky is falling crowd that doesn’t understand that a close win is still a win. The older fans that react badly to that happening would be the football program trolls like JK.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

raking up points does matter

Jul 6, 2023, 12:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Opening game jitters. ]

LSU2019 is forever the best team ever even though JoeB played 4 quarters every game

TL16 played two quarters of football every game

we all know that Trevor is better and a 2018 and 2019 Clemson were better - we just didn't have a defense, rebuild year

POINTS matter a lot. I'm fine with no transfer portal. i'm fine with NIL and recruiting approach. I'm not fine that we don't throttle the lights out of teams . our brand perception hurts because of this. it hurts badly

No matter what you think you know, until the game is played

1

Jul 6, 2023, 9:58 AM

nobody truly knows. Duke is good, Clemson is really good.

If you play games on paper, Clemson wins 38-13 or something like that. Paper is worthless sometimes, therefore our Tigers have to get it done on the field against Duke... Play hard, disciplined, smart, and if all this happens, usually the better team will win

I have a friend who is an Alabama fan. The Tide faithful do not have jitters about teams like Duke. I can hear his voice say, “we’ll roll over that team, no problem”.
Clemson faithful need to start having that kind of confidence. This is the next step in being a premier football program.
Just my opinion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like confidence, but when a fan like myself determines the

outcome of a game, then I will let the confidence fly.

I am confident we win, no question. But I also know a game between college age kids is not always an easily determined outcome.

Cade has started 1 college football game. It was a good effort, and of course NC game was really good. But he needs to put any doubts in a fans head to rest with a great outing showing what he is capable of doing. This new offensive system is new, how do the players buy in and play in new sets.

I am excited, but always tempered and by the way, I LOATHE ALABAMA FANS ENTIRELY!!!!

I sincerely never want to be even remotely like them, NO

For me the key phrase in your post is "usually the better team will win". It's that "usually" part that sticks in my worried mind.

I don’t worry about Duke, but realize upsets can happen. Even as a night game it will still be warm and I don’t think Duke has the depth to play the number of quality players that we have ………. Especially on defense. My guess is that they could keep it fairly close in the first half and we start to run away in the second half.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No jitters for this opening game against Duke

As a fan, I’ve never had opening game jitters. In fact, I’ve looked ahead to other opponents. It just doesn’t matter that I’m not prepared or ready to play. It will not affect the game at all. Duke is Duke. If Clemson doesn’t kick their ### then we’re not who we think we are.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’ve never like starting the season away from home …

2

Jul 6, 2023, 10:40 AM

… regardless of the opponent.

Always felt like it was best to open the season in a friendly environment against an opponent that is just good enough to provide a test, but not good enough to beat us.

In the 5 years I’ve followed Clemson football I can count on one hand the number of times the season opener was not at home and most of those have been fairly recent.

It’s a TV thing, I realize. Just don’t like it, that’s all …

Memory is a funny thing …

…I just actually researched the Clemson schedules from when I was a kid and more times than not, we actally opened the season on the road.

My only defense is that when I was a kid growing up in Clemson, I guess the only games I went to were home games so the first game I went to each year I probably assumed it was the season opener?

Also, I noticed that back then we only played five home games a year, with the SCAR game being away every season along with each and every Ga Tech game.

+1, it's a fun post, but if a fan gets jitters, then they...

4

are worrying about the wrong things.

Clemson was better than a 2 TD favorite in November when the dirt peckers came to DV. Shyatt happens, it was an upset. Understanding the sentiment, it's easier to get an unexpected W earlier, than late if only for the lack of information available early and the amount of time that can be afforded upfront over summer & camp. Bye weeks[one then two] might be an additional hurdle that wasn't available way back when?

Enjoy it, don't worry about it, have fun, the team does all the work; jitters are for 3 putting from 12 feet to lose the US OPEN - see that coot, Dustin Johnson.

+1 for the firmly grounded perspective DSP.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Upsets happen at anytime in the season…

2

Jul 6, 2023, 11:03 AM

Look at that ND/Stanford game.

The Scar game was an upset for us in Nov. We were the better team that just crapped the bed on too many fronts in the game to win it. Which makes such games mortally frustrating to watch as a fan.

As far as Duke is concerned, I think we handle them with no problem in the end. That said, they must not be taken lightly by the players and the staff. I say that precisely because of the ND and Scar games last year. Playing an off cycle game (Monday night) and away in the first game of the year adds wrinkles that I prefer not to have added. So if the team is not dialed in and ready and Duke gets up early, it could turn into a dogfight. It is best to not let that happen.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

3 to 7 point game, imo.

Dabo doesn't do blowouts this time of the year, not against FBS teams.
