Clemson's offense: A work in progress
Through five games, the Clemson offense has had flashes of brilliances, drives filled with toughness and grit and they’ve protected the football. But the passing game hasn’t gotten untracked, there have been plenty of mistakes and twice in the first five games has failed to garner more than 332 yards. Full Story » |

Our Defense is poised to be second to none this year.
With that Defense and a seasoned O-line ready to be a wall for any QB a plow for any RB, if the Offense can be merely above average and keep the ball safe then we will be in a position to win any game.
We can follow the Alabama plan from last year: prevent other teams from scoring--getting defensive touchdowns is really super helpful!--and stay under control on the offensive side. Bama "protected" Jalen Hurts and he got them to the Title game.
When Kelly (or Johnson) and Feaster & receivers get their game going, we'll be OK. Hopefully that doesn't take 3 or 4 games.
Surviving the stretch of Auburn, @Louisville, and @VaTech will be the key.

Why did you say Kelly or Johnson? Cooper would be the next qb to come in if something happened to Kelly. He won the backup job in camp, beating out Johnson. In my opinion, Johnson will never see an impactful snap at clemson. He will transfer next year.

You don't HAVE to pass for a lot of yards AND run for a lot of yards.
Against inferior opposition, of course, you hope to put up nearly even numbers.
But against better teams, taking what the defense is willing to give up, with our weapons, means they get burned on that thing.
If the opponent is bent on taking away the pass, then if we can run down their throat, we win. We have Kelly, Feaster, ETN, Fuller, run all day. So what if we have less than 100 yards passing?
If they try to take away the run, and we can pass for 300+ yds, we win. We have Kelly sit back and pick them apart find each open receiver, be it Cain, or Renfrow, or Ray-Ray, or Overton, or even a running back drifting out of the backfield. So what if we rush for less than 100 yards?
We'll run enough so that even if they are stacked up to prevent the run, we keep them committed to that and torch them with Bryant and WRU. We'll pass enough so that even if they are using everyone in zone coverage to keep completions down, well keep them honest and Kelly and 4 quality RBs (and 2 special RBs) will make it look like a track meet.
Then only problem will be if we shoot ourselves in the foot with short field turnovers.

I think that's a pretty honest assessment. I noticed that even though Feaster has gotten leaps and bounds better in protection, Foster was able to get him to miss the delayed blitz a couple of times. Also, it's predictable when Etienne gets the ball every time he's on the field unless I missed something.

As Sam Wyche says ... good teams get beat but never

the same way twice. Now Clemson has not been beaten or even challenged in 2017, still the weak spots have been inconsistent special teams and inconsistent QB/passing play which has negated the skill sets at WR ... and the WR group is just about the most talented group on team just behind unreal DL. Multi-talented Deon Cain is largely dormant. As Hood smartly reports and TE acknowledges, it is a WIP with an inexperienced QB. Long way to go and plenty of time to hone craft before Bama-like competition.

Also seems the WRs have dropped some passes or not given max effort to extend for some catches. Started the first couple games of 2016 that way. Clean that up and KB looks like a Heisman candidate. (I said “candidate”)

No doubt Bryant has played better than any of us could had imagined. But I think the key to the offense is KB improving on those intermediate throws- 10-20 yds. And it isn't like the OL has played that great either. So there's plenty of im- provement to go around, right. And as good as the defense has been, I think the coaching staff has seen no need to put more on the offense than need be.
Just my take.. #21
