As fans we want coaches to be honest and tell us what they really think rather than use coachspeak and give non-substantive answers to tough questions.
When they do give open and honest answers, we blast them for their frankness and wish they were more nuanced in their responses.
And, that is true of fans at every school, not just Clemson.

The problem is that Dabo has not made the tough admission as to why he is not winning. I think if he would acknowledge the problems, everyone would be more patient. Then again, I guess it would be tough for him to say ,I hired my buddies and I totally screwed up on NIL and portal

Sure he does. Ask Hatfield, Bowden, West, and a litany of other coaches who had to answer to boosters and alumni. The power belongs to the people. Dabo has definitely made people think about how much they donate to the program. Donations drop and coaches get fired quickly. I have reined in my donation amount to reflect my displeasure. One booster at a time, that is where coaches are hired and fired.

Not to mention I’ve listed my tickets on stub hub. That’s $2k plus per game over six weekends that isn’t being infused into the Clemson community/economy. Sure, it’s barely a drop in the bucket. Multiply that as boosters start to follow suit. Before you know it, trustees start to panic.

When a team is losing, a coach giving real reasons why would be blasted as making excuses.
Dabo will not throw players or coaches under the bus, esp during the season.

He used to be so hungry and humble and had something to prove. Now he’s got a chip on his shoulder for the fan base. Let’s face it. The nepotism hires killed us.
Replacing one of the best DC’s in college with an analyst that has never called a live game .. after the offense had been on a
Downward spiral for YEARS? The stubbornness to make changes to the offense even when recruiting is falling off..
Venables was the reason for our consistency. I don’t care what you guys say statistically. Situationally he was one of the best we’ve ever seen. He made our players look even better. Challenged them hard with a complex scheme.
Dabo going to keep tinkering with the offense, defense is inconsistent. We go into 3 man fronts and make our guys cover for way too long. It’s obvious stuff. Hard to watch. Maybe I’ll watch again for the coot game. Should be a real fun chit show

I love this line of thought. Wanna share your offseason posts fretting about having a new PK? That was the one single glaring unknown on our roster but experts like you were all position coaches, WRs, O-line, Wes, friends and family, yada yada yada, right?. Hardly a peep about PK before the Duke game.
Your part about Wes still being unqualified considering how well our D has played this season with an O that can't eat up clock says all I need to know about the value of your insights.
Sorry to hear you won't be taking in any Tigers games until SCar. Sounds about right for some on here.

If Tyler’s feelings are hurt he shouldn’t be insulting someone who has done a helluva “at a prominent University and football program”.
What?? He didn’t insult Dabo. Give me a #### break. Dabo makes 11 million. He has NEVER had to answer a tough question at any of his press conferences because no one has the nads to ask him anything but softball questions. Now that someone has asked him a tough question, he freaks out and acts like a child about it. He’s losing because he is being exposed as a head coach that makes bad hires and is too stubborn to change his ways. He got lucky with Venables and Tony. They are gone now and Dabo is sinking the ship.

I fully support Dabo, he is 100% right. Tyler is a whiner.
I love the fact that when Tyler called Dabo arrogant Dabo showed that he’s not arrogant. If he was arrogant, he would’ve brushed the comment aside and moved on. Instead he hit it Tyler head on.
We are fortunate to have Dabo as a head coach.

Possibly. But very few coaches have the payout that he does.....
He was paid based on performance. His performance has fallen through the floor. Hiring "experimental" coaches failed.
Now, Dabo's not being treated like the CEO - he's being treated like any sales rep in the nation. If he doesn't perform EVERY YEAR, not the just certain ones, he's going to be called out on it.
He doesn't want the noise/smoke that comes along with "1 down year", then he picked the wrong profession.

Very few people in the world are paid based on their current performance.
People are either paid on their past performance or the forecast of their future performance.
Dabo's contract was written with both of those aspects in mind.
If Dabo continues to produce losing seasons, then his recent poor performance and lower expectations for the future will warrant reducing his contract or terminating it.
Dabo didn't get a mid-season massive raise when he was sitting at 8-0 in 2011.
Dabo didn't get a contract reduction when Clemson took a step back in 2014 either.
The fact that people are becoming hung up on paying Dabo's salary while Clemson is 4-4 are just looking for something to stomp their feet about.

Dabo has earned some grace, but he also needs to stop gaslighting the fan base. He is and has been a great coach. He will be great again in the future, but I don't like to see this version of Dabo.

This is exactly how I feel. The indignation at early criticism this season wasn’t a good look. Has nothing to do with his pay. Dabo of 2010 wasn’t so thin skinned. Anyone that thinks we need another coach should be tuned out. However, it isn’t that much of an ask for some honest self reflection.

Dabo is 4-4 with a few losses in OT.
Yes, it all comes back to him, but I think we all know the structural changes needed can’t be made during the season. Should he have made some changes over the past two years yes. He didn’t.
I believe he will make the necessary changes after this season and turn things around.

Brett - I don’t disagree with your premise, but I think Dabo’s execution is suspect. If we are to celebrate the candidness, honesty, and transparency he displays when it suits him (ie firing off on Tyler), then we should expect the same at all times…not just been convenient. His pressers that are filled with Pollyanna comments during spring or after many disappointing games are not so honest, candid and transparent. Be consistent.

What makes you think he wasn't being honest? I firmly believe that he thought that this could be one of his better teams and could make it to the CFP. Being wrong and not being honest are two different things that most people should understand.

Bobby was consistently winning 8 or 9 games a year, but lost 5 or 6 in a row to Florida. Fans were saying he couldn't get the job done. There was talk that FSU should fire him and go hire the Duke coach, Steve Spurrier.
He won the 93 national championship. By 96 or 97 fans were saying he was too old and it was time for him to retire. Every year a discussion was held on message boards, "Who should be the next FSU coach?"
After the 2000 national championship, Mark Richt left and went to UGA. Took a couple of key assistants with him. Bobby made some questionable hires (promoting his son to OC was the most questionable) that didn't work out. Bobby dug in his heels and kept those coaches on staff. That was the beginning of the end.
But, it took 3 or so years of declining performance for the fans to get really upset.
In today's world, fans are more impatient.
Watch, if LSU beats Bama this Saturday, some Bama fans will be saying it is time for Nick to retire and for Bama to hire Kirby Smart.

You're right.
I read the transcript and what stood out to me is how much he believes in hard work, and a person's will to succeed. There's no doubt he believed that if he hired friends, and former players, regardless of coaching pedigree he could develop them into great coaches. That has obviously back-fired.
It may have taken a while to notice what many fans saw all along because he's so stubborn, but he's finally owning it. He created his own mess, and I think he'll get it fixed.
He's done some unconventional things in the past that have worked out, so I'm not shocked that he really thought he could do things his way and everything would go according to plan. He ain't perfect. Live and learn!
The best thing fans can do at this point is stay positive. Dabo doesn't sound like he's retiring, so that means he's probably going to clean house and embrace the transfer portal. Better days are ahead...at some point.

Agreed. From what I can tell, it’s a pretty mixed bag when it comes to the perception of that call list night. Some say it’s embarrassing & others said it was justified. Even people from other fan bases on social media were standing up for CDS. I’m glad he’s fired up. I have a feeling there will be changes in the off season. Go Tigers!

If I am the most winning coach in school history . . .
If I have won 2 National Championships in the last 10 years . . .
If I am making approximately 10 miilion dollars per year for my expertise . . .
IF I HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON WITH MY PROGRAM AND WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO FIX IT . . .
then some random phone caller does not have any chance of getting under my skin and sending me off on a defensive, vulgar rant in which I directly insult a significant chunk of our fans - and the ones who pay my salary.

Has this been a disappointing year? Definitely.
Are fans frustrated? Definitely. Do changes need to be made, both coaching and players?
Definitely. Bring back the fire... Bring back the days of benching a player if they go rogue or keep dropping passes.
But…most disappointing is the attitude of some fans toward Dabo...to doubt his commitment and work ethic is unconscionable. To say he is full of pride and not earning his salary is disrespectful. To forget what he has done, not only for the school but in the lives of so many young men is unforgivable.
Dabo is trying to maintain the culture we are all so proud of at Clemson, while fighting the lack of loyalty NIL and the transfer portal bring.
Be careful, Clemson fans...an attitude like that will make him leave Clemson long before he would ever be asked to by the school..he is the best thing to happen too Clemson…ever.

which is where bandwagons come from.
A big part of winning is dealing with distractions, rhetoric, fanatics, that say the sky is falling. This has been a difficult season for the team and CDS, but part of winning is dealing with unruly sections of fans when things go downhill. It is part of the territory, everyone is out for blood it appears when it is only the fanatical ones who think they know it all and have no idea.
Coaching young guys with great talent cannot be easy. Life is happening, they are living, learning, and sometimes they are mature beyond their years and able to focus better. Sometimes you get a team that needs a lot of work, which is 2023

But in media, whether a live show or a recorded interview, you never, ever, ever attack the questioner. Never. You either say "no comment" or set about answering the question.
I believe his question was whether Dabo is earning his money. He obfuscated a little with the Proverb crack (which was tacky) and was a little bit ranty in his take. But, the question was about the money and the team's 4-4 record.
A real pro would've just said :
"Hey, fair question, Tyler. I get that I make a lot of money to coach a game. And I'm grateful. I APPRECIATE (see, there's that word again) what being Clemson's head coach means. Don't take it for granted.
I get that the money brings EXPECTATIONS (again ... another favorite Dabo word) from a lot of different places, especially from the fans who help pay the program's way. They fund the schollys, they build facilities, they buy the tickets, pay for the tailgates, show up on game day.
I realize we're in a disappointing time right now. I think it's a little unfair to say it's all on me because of the money I make. I can't make the passes, hold on to the football, be both OC and DC and all that. But I also can't say it's fair to blame someone else, either. I'm the dude, I'm the guy. Buck stops with me."

He kind of did say all that, just more like “hey you stupid ### brat idiot fan, don’t you know I built this team, this town. I’ve never failed, I’m the greatest thing that’s ever happened to you and you should appreciate it”. Sounds like what an abusive 45 year old guy says to a 19-20 year old girlfriend they managed to fool

Dabo is not frank or candid. There is no way he thought this team was championship caliber. He uses coachspeak more than most. The other day I said he lied, that was an exaggeration. He either wasn't candid or he doesn't know talent. I think it was lack of candor.

It's not a matter of giving an open answer. I keep hearing that the caller attacked Dabo's integrity but all he did was quote Proverbs 16:18. Dabo then went into saying Clemson hadn't sniffed a championship in 35 years and spouted off his accomplishments, demonstrating the first part on the verse. In the process he called him a smartazz kid and was condescending about the young man's age. He followed that up by calling him an idiot today and saying that he gave him an Old Testament response which once again demonstrated the first part of the verse.
An open response is fine. Attacking fans is not, especially after he had a night to think about it.

After reading some of the replies, I see people saying the caller attacked Dabo's work ethic. I didn't really take it that way but I understand how you could. Maybe Dabo did, but I still feel like there was no excuse for how he answered the question, especially when doubling down on things the morning after.

Maybe Tyler from Spartanburg lives comfortably with his parents. Maybe one day he will own his own vehicle. I rather stand with a self-made man that has given Clemson fans many years of great seasons. I support Dabo and Clemson ! Bring it on haters.FYI The bandwagon has to stop at intersections so hop off anytime.
