Making recruits wait on an offer

I'm going to second guess our strategy here. No I don't think I'm smarter than the Coaches but here goes. We left Klubnik waiting because we were waiting on another kid. We made the kid from Dutch Fork wait because we were waiting on another kid. With a few exceptions would it not be better to allow a super good recruit to commit to Clemson rather than wait on these on the fence guys? Especially in the case of a QB like Klubnik?

along with being super selective about who we offer. only 77 offers out this year take a look at how many offers even programs like BAMA and Ohio State have put out. its almost like when we miss on a player or two there arent many backup options until too late

Bama had 222 offers but there are plenty of teams with lots more. Their hit rate (offers/commitments) was about 10%. Ohio State had a lot less with 115, and a hit rate of 15.6%, which was the same as the Tigers. just an interesting comparison.

It sounds like good logic. The only reason I don’t know the answer to your post is because I don’t know what Dabo is telling these recruits. Plus Dabo’s philosophy has worked until NIL and the TP invaded college football.
I do think recruiting will change but I don’t know what changes Dabo and his staff will make. Only time will tell.
Your post was excellent. It makes you think about our recruiting decisions.

By and large, it has worked but this isn't the first year we've had to get last minute recruits. Now, most of the time, Dabo has always pulled a few rabbits out the hat that ended up being good. Perhaps that happens this year if you don't have 3, maybe 4 recruits screw you 2 weeks b4 signing. Still, 77 offers, @ClemsonPaw had said in June target was 18-19 this class. That's close to 25% commit rate... Which is high even for us given the competition.

I don't think I've seen this talked about but some schools like Alabama are going to be pulling offers soon when they reach their limit. It'll give us more players to look at and possibly recruit ourselves.

What reason would prevent us from being able to recruit those guys now?

Nothing. But they are probably players our recruiters haven't talked to or they are just undecided since they are still sitting on offers. Theres thousands of players and we only have a small number of recruiters. No better or worse than the portal.

In normal recruiting cycles with kids coming in for camps, the offers are made 1-3 years in advance. Since there were no camps in 2020, and subsequently, few offers to kids who hadn't been to campus, the manner with which Dabo vetts was thrown into disarray. It's taking some time to right the recruiting calendar, but with camps in '21 and '22, all should be well and offers made earlier than during the past 18 months.
There's really no point in offering a student/family who either doesn't want Clemson or Clemson doesn't want. The eval includes a visit to campus, meeting with coaches and staff, ultimately, meeting with Swinney. Once the prospect has been vetted and all the boxes checked, an offer can be extended.
For many prospects, that would normally be between their 2nd high school spring and the summer before their 4th year.

Clemson gives out the same amount of committable offers as everyone else. Others just give out 125+ non-committable offers as well.

Thats how we got ETN.... we never offered him until the three we were chasing went elsewhere. And the only reason we got in touch with him was b/c Burton Burns, who was a RB coach under Tommy West, was the RB coach at Bama. Burton wanted to get ETN, but they had already got commitments from higher ranking RBs. Burton called Brad Scott and told him to go get him.... and you all know the rest of the story.
It will be interesting if we get Trevor ETN and DJUs younger brother. I am thinking we are going to miss on them both. Trevor wants to pave his own way, and I don't like the look of his bitcoin gig. DJUs younger brother is going to stay in LA.

Or just develop relationships with more high school players

and just be honest about who your first choice is and what the situation is - basically the way we got Cade Klubnick. Some may not like it, but it sure beats being left with the low scholarship numbers we have now, which will hurt us down the road.

Unless we get guys, we are going to have about 70 scholarship players at fall camp. And that is if KJ Henry comes back. We are going to need to sign 30 for the 2023 class to have 85. I love how Dabo does it, but he might be forced to re-look at not offering players unless they come to campus first.
Right now we have 14 open scholarships.... and giving them to walk-ons does not count as filling the scholarship.

That’s probably the way Dabo handles recruiting by being honest with every recruit. I am sure he tells them they are on Clemson board but behind another recruit. The recruits have other offers but if they really want to come to Clemson many of them will be patient We were waiting on Zemir White whose chose UGA that’s when they went after ETN.
Dabo has been pretty successful with his recruiting style. I think NiL has made it easier for some schools to hand out illegal $$$$$.
The NCAA turns the other way for some schools. We know who they are.
White did us and ETN a favor going to UGA.

I understand the logic, bit not sure why we make #1 QB in nation wait. Wait on who? Tom Brady?
