I'm just asking a question

David spoke to the men who were standing by him saying, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”[c] 27 The people answered him saying something like, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”

28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking to the men, Eliab became very angry at David. He said, “Why have you come down here? With whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know about your pride and the wickedness of your heart, for you only came down here to see the battle.” 29 David answered, “What have I done now? Was it not just a question?”

I think yes, an innocent question, but apparently there was a lot of bad blood, and short tempers, in the family at that point.

Back in 1 Samuel 16, God had Jesse parade his sons around for God to inspect. And he rejected each in turn:

6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”

7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.

11 ...he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12 Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

So I think the older brothers were just pixxed that they had all been passed over by the youngest, David, and so anything David said was sure to irritate them, as it had probably done on past occasions.

Just free associating here:

That's a fun passage. David is almost sneering at the Israeli army hunkered down in fright; "You guys are scared of those idiots?" He has reason to be a little full of himself, but the attitude gets him into trouble down the road. As Ford said, his brothers are a bit jealous already, and this isn't helping that. The "I'm just asking" line was funny, more of the goading. Then the kid says to the King, "Stop your fretting. It's embarrassing. I'll go handle this." A humorous account.

Oh David was setting them straight.

That's why I like the KJB, "29. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?"

That question was mean to focus their attention on what they were doing, standing there and letting a heathen insult God while they are the very men appointed to see that shouldn't happen without repercussions.

David saw the spectacle and ask ~'what do I get if I kick this guy's butt? You know, the man you've run from daily?' Noticed that no one laughed? I can see them pulling their heads backward from their shoulders and getting big eyes as they realize this little feller is serious.

"Oh, a ton of stuff, good stuff including a hot babe." At which point everyone in earshot realized would be the highlight of their lives if they had that audacity.

David was upstaging every man in the entire army by upstaging them. Big brother was shamed and embarrassed.

David was saying 'WT...is wrong with you guys, you don't trust The LORD to deliver this dog!?!"

What am I doing this morning? I should be doing my daily reading rather than ranting about why my Bible is better than yours?

BTW, Jesus forgives sin and is just in doing so.

Ha. Indeed he does. But if no one is offended, is the rant a sin?

I did wonder about that, because "cause" is quite different from the more common translations of "speak" or "question", so I went to the source of truth: the internet. It seems that the phrase in v. 29 is transliterated as "is it not a word".

One translation team was apparently 400 years ahead of itself, and saw "word" as the modern bards do, as in "word up, bru". They may have been culturally prescient, but they weren't hip, so "is this not the cause" was what came out.

The modern translators are stuck in the 60's from which they came, so still being 50 years behind King Jim they saw "word" as "What'd I Say?" Raylettes singing backup and everything.

"Uncircumcised" is key to this passage. Through invoking the term uncircumcised, David pointed out that Goliath was out of covenant with God.
