To be pretty troubling, right?
I mean we have Air Force bases and spy satellites and surface to air missiles and all the rest of it and balloons aren’t exactly clandestine or fast moving. How did this thing even get past the coast? Seems like the all-mighty government would have shot it down over the ocean…

Over China every day. Not sure it makes a difference. That being said I can't think of a safer place to shoot it down than over Montana.

They said this has happened before, but it was classified or sensitive information not disclosed to the public. So, whatever the US's response was at that time set the precedent. I suppose we did not shoot it down, so China decided to try it again.
This is one of those things where we just don't know enough to even speculate. I'd like to jump on the "Biden is an idiot for letting this happen" bandwagon, but that's a bit disingenuous.
I am guessing the following is true:
- we knew it was coming before it got here
- we know its mission
- we have either disabled it or are letting it run so we can determine what it is doing
- we have determined it is not a threat
- we may be spoofing signals it is looking for
- we could shoot it down

And this is more so the deep state/ MIC than Biden. The Biden admin is lying about their reasons for not shooting it down, of course, but I don’t think this is a blame Biden moment.
This is China showing the world that they will do what they want. A real national defense would have shot it down over international waters and that’s that.

Reports are that China's satellites currently in space likely have better capability of gathering intelligence that the ballon thing does. I think China is simply trying to see how far they can push us.

It is interesting in a what's old is new again sort of way, that the primitive tech has some advantages.
I don't want us to blow it out of the sky, but there's gotta be a way to bring it down to analyze, no? I get that it is extremely high, but there has to be some way to retrieve it.
As the Chinese have not acknowledged it is theirs, we can pretty much do what we want without fear of retribution.

it at that altitude unless the govt commandeers the Goodyear Blimp or something - and I don't even think that one goes that high (but I don't know).
Helicopters could tie ropes to it and tow it around, but I don't think they can get up there.
Jets can blow it out of the sky but not much else.
Still should have never made it over land.
