Our open field tacking is not up to snuff. I am not near to ask these questions so, maybe some of that know at what you are looking, can tell me if I am just crazy.

Explain why I am confused. I was called crazy at CNSYD, but that did not bother me.

We seem to struggle on wrapping them up. Most tackles are ankle grabs and yards after contact is just awful.

Maybe you could do better when you are trying to tackle a 230 lb running back probably 23 years old

Facts. Hurts your arm just to collide with the high-speed powerful athletes. Let alone wrap them up and bring them down. It's like trying catching a line drive homerun with your hand. Looks easy on T.V. but when that sumbich comes at you, you're like, nope.

Our defense is top 10 again. Wes Goodwin since the end of the 1st half against FSU has made me look like a fool for complaining about him.
LSU and Ole Miss can’t tackle

You might be crazy but it has nothing to do with what you observed. I saw a few things that need some tweaking on your point.

yes we did a lot of arm tackling plus the right side of our defense seems to be unavailable a lot of times.

The defense has been great but that is where it could be even better. Several times we’ve missed on the first opportunity that would have resulted in a TFL or short gain but instead ended up with a bigger gain and several times a first down. No panic, just an area of opportunity for improvement.

That plagued even some of our best players in the past. I seem to remember a kid named Boulware that would rip into the backfield at many times he would not get tbe qb. He would over pursue and not wrap up. He did ok in tbe end! Like already said, this is a correctable issue. At least they are around tbe ball, and Wes has them playing aggressive again!

I saw someone make an open field tackle yesterday, not sure who it was, it might’ve been Carter, but I remember thinking at that time, “holy cow, a Clemson defender actually made an open field tackle, how unique was that”.
I have the same sentiment about our lack of consistent open field tackling. I get it that it’s hard, and it’s great when it happens, it just seems it doesn’t happen frequently enough.

Agree on the general point but I will say, I watched more college football yesterday (outside of Clemson) than I have all season and I was surprised how pervasive this is around college football. It made me feel a bit better about Clemson’s tackling. I’m sure it’s because I’m watching every play but our missed open field tackles seem to happen a lot on 3rd downs. Opponents extending drives on missed 1v1 plays always makes it feel worse. That said, I have zero stats to back this up so could just be confirmation bias and bad memory.
Agree with other posters that it’s something that we can still improve and work on but I’ll absolutely take what we have in our scheme and players that give us a top 10 defense vs some open field blow it up guys who are in the wrong spots giving up big plays on a mediocre scoring defense. Go Tigers!

Hammers like BJ Goodson are simply uncommon in CFB.
LaVonta Bentley was very good at tackling. Unfortunately for us, he wasn’t fast enough for Clemson’s Target role for a LB, so his snap count was declining. As we all know, he left us via the portal.
We sure could have used him this year.

I watched several games yesterday and I saw missed tackles in every single game. Alabama. Oklahoma. Tennessee. Ga. Michigan. ND. Duke. USC.
It’s not good to see missed tackes but there’s never a game without it. It’s not a “trend”.
Just that simple.

I'm clearly no expert but I think one potential response to so many missed tackles in general in college football is the fear of targeting. The fact that tacklers now have to be more careful and precise about using a shoulder and not leading with the helmet has made it more challenging.

What I see is a familiar trait that's developing among many teams is the desire to just lay a good luck on the ball carrier believing falsely that this is sufficient only to see the guy run through it. Maybe it's an effort to pop the ball loose. I can respect that but at the same time do your job. Especially on short runs. Can't afford for them to wiggle free for extra yardage.

Tackling was a big problem in the Duke game. Mostly because of bad pursuit angles and over pursuing. It has improved since then. I think the lack of contact in practice is the problem.
