Creativity is not a word I would have used to describe DJ’s play last year. That sounds much better. Go Tigers! Spot the dang ball!!!!

Oh, do you think Georgia & their fierce rushing Dline screwwed him up?

Of course, those hits, sacks, int, mama & daddy separating and his being busy on his NIL food deal and getting overweight didn't help.

What are the odds that Cade takes over as starter by mid season, and the odds that he takes the starting job before end of season? 50-50 before mid season, and 70-30 by end of season!!!

Sounds like Dabo and Tiger coaches are somewhat in denial on QB position. DJ went 17-36 vs. the Tiger Defense in this scrimmage with Cade going right around 15-23. The headline of the article states DJ is creative, but the storyline reads Cade keeps exceptional Tiger Defense on its toes with his running ability. Lots of storyline ahead to play out.

If DJ stays at Clemson next season as Dabo's designated starter, Cade will have to move on down the road, and he will have unlimited options including the top teams in the country. I do not see that happening.

“Creatively” at the QB position? Ok … Cade moving on due to riding the bench, not a chance.

Stillapirate® ... Do you believe Cade Klubnik would spend two years on the bench as one of the top players on the team and in the country when he could start almost anywhere else? Something will have to give.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ will be moving on after this year, one way or another.

Aug 18, 2022, 2:37 PM

Cade is the starter next year.

Think about it. If DJ has a good enough year to keep the starting job all year, he will be going to the NFL because we will be a playoff team. If he falters, Cade gets his shot and DJ transfers. Either way, this will be DJ’s last year at Clemson.

I’m pulling for DJ to rock the football world this year and shock a lot of the naysayers. I want him to have a storybook season.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cade would have to compete almost anywhere

A poster mentioned above and I think it hits the nail on the head.

DJ plays well and keeps the starting spot, he has all the measurables for the NFL and he showed the nfl he can battle through adversity. He’s getting drafted.

DJ struggles and Cade takes over, DJ is going to another school for one last year to try to impress the NFL. He transfers.

Either way, DJ coming back next year is slim to none.

If people only knew what he went through last off-season and then during the season, they would be amazed at his resilience and mental toughness. This will be his year of redemption. This team will rally for him too. Watch and see.

I hear you

Aug 18, 2022, 2:52 PM

And I read the same thing four years ago as a large percentage of TNet preferred Kelly Bryant as the starter over Trevor Lawrence. That would have cost the Tigers a national championship. Dabo observed and made the right move with a big assist from CW42.

I was vocal then. I was vocal for Deshaun Watson to start asap. And I'm vocal now. Klubnik is being given little respect by many on TNet. It's a 22-starter game. It's about every starter on the team, and giving them the best opportunity to advance. It's now all about DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I hear you

Aug 18, 2022, 3:43 PM [ in reply to I hear you ]

I agree w you. There are lots of positive comments circulating on this thread about what DJ is going to do this year. I don't see it. Pretty clear from last year's performance he doesn't have the 'it' factor needed at quarterback for a top 5 team and that isn't going to change all of a sudden this year. This is Kelly Bryant revisited for sure. At least we know Dabo will make a change if change is needed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But will he make a change only after a loss or nail-biter?

Aug 18, 2022, 5:26 PM

Hopefully DJ does great and leads us to a natty. My concern is that Dabo arguably has a track-record of starting the more senior (seemingly worse) QB until partway through the season— undoubtedly with good reasons.

I felt that DW4 should have started over Stout from game-1. Dabo didn't start DW4 until after it arguably cost Clemson a 2nd loss @FSU and an Atlantic crown.

I felt that Trevor Lawrence should have started over Bryant from game-1. Dabo didn’t start TL until game-4. Fortunately we survived a (28-26) nail-biter @TAMU and consequently went on to win a natty. (Not sure we make the playoffs if that nail-biter had gone the other way.)

But Dabo has had a fantastic run, and he seems to learn from his mistakes, so he certainly deserves the benefit of the doubt (to say the least).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: But will he make a change only after a loss or nail-biter?

Aug 18, 2022, 6:21 PM

Watson played almost the entire FSU game. We didn’t lose bc we started Cole. We lost on a bad snap at the goal line and a crucial late fumble.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cole played 1st 3 series of OT-game. Threw gimme TD in dirt

Aug 18, 2022, 9:44 PM

On the 2nd series, Stoudt threw a rollout gimme TD into the dirt (intended for a wide-open Jordan Leggett). It was the same kind of short TD pass that DW4 completed to Renfrow to clinch the 2016 natty. If Stoudt hadn't thrown that pass into the dirt, the game probably wouldn't have gone into OT.

DW4 had a higher completion percentage (68% vs 60%) and a higher YPA (9.5 vs 8), and more points per series (2 vs 1).

And Watson achieved that despite Stoudt getting the 1st team practice reps.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Clemson would have scored at least one more point, would have put FSU in worse field position a few times, and would have won that game if Watson had gotten the 1st team reps and the start.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would have beaten UGA too.***

DW4's TD-pass to Charone Peak vs UGA was NFL-caliber

Aug 19, 2022, 3:07 PM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ou_6nweow8

At the time I was thinking, "Why isn't Watson our starting QB?"

Supposedly he didn't know the playbook well enough to take over the QB job until the 4th series of the FSU OT game that we lost. Apparently, DW4 finished learning the playbook while riding the pine for the first 3 series.

Aug 18, 2022, 3:25 PM [ in reply to 1 of only 4! to start every game last year, and had a broken ]

Pretty darn good point, plus the knee/leg issue. But I still predict Klubnik will be starter by mid-season. The cryptic messages are too much - I know Dabo has to try to keep everyone happy and confident, but I'm just thinking Klubnik is another generational player that fits into our offense better with his mobility - playing football in Texas at his school is already like playing college (at a lesser tier school) so I feel the learning curve is a bit less than other QBs.

Interesting comparison of total snaps with DJU and KB2.
1. In both seasons there was just not a suitable replacement as far as the coaches were concerned, so they didn’t share are many snaps.
2. DW4 and TL16 normally opened up a big lead to pave the way for backups to take more snaps.

Aug 18, 2022, 5:22 PM

This faint praise shows DJ is toast and we better hope Cade is ready to take over by game 5 (I'm now assuming WF is an automatic win since their QB is out). Not a word about DJ's accuracy being better.

Dabo isn't in denial about anything. He just can't speak his mind on a very sensitive issue.

I truly wish DJ the best but he just isn't very good unless there is an all-universe RB in the backfield that makes defenses panic.

Re: It is what it is. Nothing we decide on Tnet

Aug 19, 2022, 1:49 AM [ in reply to It is what it is. Nothing we decide on Tnet ]

You have to earn trust every year, especially when you're one of the highest paid coaches in football. Clemson has struggled in big games the last three seasons. It's a fact. Last year, we saw an offense that was on paper the fifth most talented finish near the bottom of the P5 and our playcalling was mocked by all experts at both the college and NFL level. Rather than promoting an expert to come in and overhaul the offense, Dabo promoted a man who has done poorly at every job he's ever had.

Now, we have a quarterback who's out in front despite the fact that not one person can say he can place the ball where it needs to go, which is really all a QB needs to do.

Dabo has done well in his career at Clemson (though I still wonder how much is a function of two legendary QBs and one of the best defenses in history spearheaded by the best defensive coordinator in college football). But those who still think it makes since to blindly trust every decision he makes are idiots.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol, again, what part of the decision making process

Aug 19, 2022, 2:13 AM

do you think fans have any control of not that you sound like one.

Edify the bored please with what Streeter had done a poor job at in his career to support your claim.

Nobody with a pulse believe your narrative about the offense without considering the mass attrition that decimated the top of the roster.

Of course his success is predicated on the talent he recruited and the coaches he hired. THAT’S his job and how he’s evaluated.

Nobody advocated for blind trust, but again, it doesn’t matter what any fan thinks. That’s why he’s paid what he’s paid and you root for the coots. The AD and BOT determine his fate as the leader of the program.

Lastly, you meant sense not since, which doesn’t help your credibility…

Re: TNET: DJ Uiagalelei's creativity and confidence earn him starting nod at QB

Aug 18, 2022, 9:44 PM

An absolute waste of time to talk who is leaving in one or two years - that will play out and not any amount of speculation from us the fans will shed any light on it.
This year is what is important and we've seen this movie twice before with DW and TL coming in and slowly making their way into the lineup with "starters" in front of them as the year began - Dabo is not going to do any different this year. However, this year is different in that neither of those two that DW and TL passed over, had anywhere near the upside and potential of DJ. He is and should be for now the starter but its a long season so the job is his to loose. Kade knew that when he came here.
Let's see what happens and then you can speculate all your want or else just watch the movie play out.

Yep.
It might be that we’re going to be a run-first team, and most throws are high percentage throws, maybe 10 yards max. One or two shots downfield per game. With a defense like ours we could be. More throws to the tight end over the middle. But who knows? I trust Dabo. That’s my speculation.
