Feelings on Dabo's guidance of this team (off th field)

Sep 4, 2012, 11:54 PM

With a lot of information and feelings being shared about the Chaplin of the team and the relationship our team has with Newspring, does this change or influence your faith in Dabo to guide our team.

Dabo has never made light of his faith but there are a lot of positive and negative impressions of how that is trickling down to the team. The family atmosphere has been noted by a lot of recruits. Spiritual guidance (or the lack there of) is often a direction of the family leader.

Simple question, does the presence of Perry Nobble influence your opinion of Dabo's guidance of this team?

Keep it to football influence only please to meet guidelines for being posted on this board. Please no comments on the message or purpose of Newspring and it's staff.

For me

Sep 5, 2012, 12:04 AM

I have to admit that I have been questioning his ability. It is personal driven by my impression of the church. I now understand the opinions that claim Dabo is a cheerleader working the personal relationship angle as much as possible. This is further supported by the recent coordinator hires to fix issues previous staffs were unable to handle.

I loves his intensity and drive. I also love his commitment to Clemson and doing things the right way but is it all self serving in the long run?

I have a simple question for you

Sep 5, 2012, 12:23 AM

Would you feel the same way about Dabo if the new chaplain was anybody else? From what I understand from your post your saying because Perry Noble is affiliated with Newspring, and you have a bad impression on the church, you now have a bad impression on Dabo? All because he hired the, (wrong?) chaplain?

Re: I have a simple question for you

Sep 5, 2012, 12:41 AM

For me (as I titled my response), yes it would make a difference. The other thing that is troubling is the media reaction and "front and center" position the team and the church have been awarded. Encouraging a team to worship and sharing your faith as a coach is important and something a lot of parents look for in a coach.

A lot of coaches do this without it becoming a lead story. TB was a prime example. Now pictures and videos are starting to appear and make news. Who does this benefit and yes there is a motive most of the time.

To answer the other post, a job is self serving 99% of the time. Religion is the exception to this. Is this just another sensational media blitz?

Exactly , we have had a team chaplain for years.....

what is the big deal now ? some people just want to complain about something all the time....

But not a Chaplin with the atmosphere that surrounds this particular one. The passion both in support of and against is pretty even when Perry is mentioned. A simple Internet search brings up a lot of information.

With that being said, we are now seeing videos and pictures being leaked (players are not using social media but coaches can?) showing what is to be considered an influential relationship. With a lot of recruits and their families stressing the importance of faith in their decision to consider Clemson, does this hurt our efforts to bring in top talent. Other boards are already posting about this topic and I am sure recruiters will point out every negative aspect there is out there. With a lot of our targets coming from other states, personal knowledge of the situation will be limited.

Yea because other coaches are going to bash

a Clemson player recieving faith. Clemson didnt force anyone to do anything religiously

Let God judge his heart

Sep 5, 2012, 12:30 AM [ in reply to For me ]

in his job as coach he'll be judged by wins and losses

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good grief . . . Dabo has a job to do - win football games,

Sep 5, 2012, 12:31 AM [ in reply to For me ]

bring in players to help him win football games, and help these young men grow into solid men.

And why does he do this ? Because it is what he feels called to do, to earn a paycheck, to make a great living for his family and whoever else he chooses to support, to be the very best at his chosen profession.

So to ask is it self-serving ? Are you serious ?

I try to get my employees to perform better and I try to hire the best people possible - why ? So they can make more money, so they can have more pride and recognition, so I can make more money and make a difference in my community.

YES - it is self-serving . . . . on a lot of levels.

Unless you are a lawyer doing pro-bono ALL THE TIME, you are probably self-serving.

And even if you were a lawyer doing pro-bono all the time - THAT is probably self serving too - to make you feel better about becoming a lawyer . . . .

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I think it's fine to have a team prayer and to encourage your players to make the right decisions off the field legally, morally and religiously.

But I honestly think that when a program actively facilitates the religions, that it can only cause controversy.

FWIW...I don't think it's a bad thing. It's just a slippery slope that brings too much non-football related attention to the team.

See the Tim Tebow circus for what can happen to a football team when this kind of thing takes place.

But

does the Christian's responsibility to share their faith outweigh the responsibility to the football team? I would be curious to know what the Mormon player Lakip thinks

Every player who comes to Clemson does so as

Sep 5, 2012, 12:38 AM [ in reply to Re: Feelings on Dabo's guidance of this team (off th field) ]

a choice they know the players that are currently on the team when they make that choice. Coach Swinney is a member of Newspring Church the Clemson football team was taking the team to Newspring the first Sunday of the start of fall camp before Coach Swinney became head coach and a member of Newspring. No one is being forced or pressured to go to Newspring football players and basketball players are attending Newspring and Coach Brownell isn't a member to my knowledge. I have seen several student give their testimony at Newspring over the years non-football players. The football players are going to church and being saved what is wrong with that would someone please tell me? They are adults they have a right to make a choice in what church is best for them. I saws CJ Spiller give his testimony at Newspring, I have seen Will Merritt speak at Newspring I can go on and on. Most of the people not all but most who are demonizing Perry Noble have never step foot in his church or heard him speek. If anyone has a problem with football players going to church any church then they have the problem not the players, they can only give 20 hours a week to football during the season NCAA rule what they do the rest of the time is not for anyone on this board to question they are not accountable to you. I can't believe that a few people who question the faith of a fellow Christian and then try and say they are a Christian is beyond me because if they know their Bible they will know they don't have that right. They can only judge those within their own church and the rest will be judge according to their own deeds by Christ on Judgement Day. I guess some of you would prefer they are hung over on Sunday from a night of drinking or do perfer they hide their faith? Well if you are Christian you know that isn't the way you lead your life and you share your faith with anyone who ask.

and seem to be very united. This type of posting does no good and is just looking for something negative.

Yeah. God forbid we question the place of religion in a public institution, right?

For what it's worth, God is my maker, your maker, everyone's maker.

This is not my opinion, this is the truth.

It's not wrong to discuss him, it's not wrong to pray to him no matter what society deems correct or incorrect.

Dabo is in a great position to mentor these kids that don't come from the greatest of backgrounds. I think it's great that these kids find God. It's just a shame it's taken some of them this long.

I'll be the first to admit, I haven't been to church in probably 6 years, but that doesn't keep me from praying every night and talking to God whenever I need to. Same thing for these kids.

It's a shame that this type of discussion gets even brought up on a board like this.

Re: Feelings on Dabo's guidance of this team (off th field)

Sep 5, 2012, 7:52 AM

Is it possible in the eyes of this board to see that Dabo is a person of immense character? That he not only talks the talk but also walks the walk. And, through his example draws his players into wanting to emulate him b/c they see the good values and want those values for themselves. To question having a chaplin on a team from a church you attend is nutty at best. If I were the coach I would want to have a chaplain be a man I know and trusted, not some random person. My word, if you have a problem with some of the team believing in God then that is your problem, not theirs.

Better a Christian influence than a satanic one.***

2 concerns. The only thing I'll say on this topic.

Sep 5, 2012, 9:47 AM

(1) I hope that any player that becomes a part of our program does not feel pressured to join the "religious" bandwagon. If a player (or any person, for that matter) chooses to accept certain religious beliefs as his own it should not be a result of social pressure, but rather a sincere personal decision that is the result of an authentic search for truth.

If a player that is a part of our program becomes personally convinced of the truth of the gospel message and finds hope for life in that message, then great. I just hope that these players are making these decisions for the right reasons.

(2) I hope that no player who does not/has not yet reached the same end to their spiritual pursuits does not feel alienated by the atmosphere created by Dabo and/or the others on the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That I can agree with. Plus a true Christian should be

showing love to others regardless of their "history". Should set the example.

Sep 5, 2012, 10:47 AM

So what you are saying is you would rather have an azzhat like spurrier who doesn't care one bit about his players off the field? Dabo does not tell his players either you go to my church or I yank your scholly. Spurrier will yank one just because you don't make the field or play good enough while on the field.
