Venables defense would actually rack up points. This defense not so much. Sure they are loads better than the offense, but to say that the defense is fine, is not true. We shouldn't just be fine on defense, we used to be elite on defense.

Stats arent everything (look at our W L record) They didnt lay a hand on Miamis Freshman QB making his first start and when the 5% of plays you miss are 50 plus yd scores Your defense isnt elite

our secondary use to be interceptions everywhere
and fumbles all of the time
we use to win games
because the opponents side line morale was destroyed.
teams come back in the 4th now because they have hope
^^ until i see the defense do this again, i'll always consider it not elite

I'm not big on stats. I'm more of an eye test guy. The defenses of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 were several notches above this year's defense if by going off the eye test and nothing else.

That's exactly what they are. Who led the nation in turnovers in 2016 and 2018? That's a stat. It measures how often a team forced turnovers. How else is it possible to quantify that?

Nothing wrong with stats, just they don't tell the whole story. Lebron James is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history. But I have him at about 22 on my all-time list. Alabama was the greatest team ever by stats in 2018, until they weren't. Stats are a sliver of the story. This year's defense gets a 5/10. Other years 9/10 or 10/10. The offense? 1/10.

That will result in better 3 and outs. When a ball carrier gets in our secondary....I have held my breath way to many times because I know we are on the skinny side back in the secondary and we tend to slip off the ball carrier or we hardly ever want to wrap up when making a tackle. Instead we want to throw a shoulder bump. Like I said.... we've been a little too skinny.
