I'll second that. Up the middle, up the middle, pass, punt!

Hootie was bad, but ...

... Frank Howard’s last two teams set the stage.
Things were in pretty bad shape when Hootie showed up and he certainly didn’t make them better.
There was a conspiracy theory at the time that Frank Howard (still the AD) hired Hootie because he didn’t want anyone to significantly upstage him. True or not, it sure seemed to work!

I don't think anyone who loved Clemson football was sorry

to see Coach Howard relinquish control of the football team and that in no way means there was a loss of respect or admiration for The Baron of Barlow Bend, but the game--particularly offensive schemes--had passed our program by. Coach Howard WAS Clemson football...and had been since the late 30's
Coach Howards last couple of teams were occasionally not even competitive. I also don't think Clemson fans thought the program could be turned around immediately. But then, Ingram arrived, and the "oft lamented Hootie Era' began. Maybe its OK to imply "The Peter Principal" applied to Hootie's eventual position as Commissioner of the SEC because, to me at least, he didn't display much affinity for being Clemson's HC. The "oft lamented Hootie Era" was a dismal time for Tiger football fans.......and thinking back on those times, makes us even more appreciative of the success Clemson football has enjoyed the last 4 or 5 years

It was bad football and he took The Hill entrance away. Why would anyone do that? The man was a dolt.

When Hootie was coach and we had our regular season game with NC State, State whipped us badly and they had a short pass in the flat we could not stop. We had a weekly QB Club meeting where the coach gave an overview of the last game. Hootie said there was just no way to stop that pass. When time came for questions, I asked Hootie, "why aren't we using that play"? I got no response.

Frank Howard thought he was hiring Coach Peterson from FSU. Peterson was ahead of his time offensively and threw the ball a lot at FSU.His mid 60s teams had Steve Tenzing(?) At QB and Fred Biletnikoff at receiver. Peterson had a terrrific staff including Bobby Bowden. At the last minute Peterson backed out of the deal and Coach Howard had to scramble to find someone else.

But Hootie hired Gene Stallings at Alabama which set the wheels in motion for Dabo so you could say in a wild sort of way he did help Clemson Football
