The Piedmont Picker

Nov 1, 2019, 3:09 PM

I was reading the Pigskin Prophet earlier and I started thinking back about the Picker.
Does anyone else remember this guy? He wrote for the old Greenville Piedmont newspaper. I think he only picked high school games. But I could be wrong.

When Steve Fuller was at Spartanburg, the picker picked them to win 77-7 almost every week. And that was usually pretty close.

It's a good thing he kept his identity secret. Because some people would get pretty riled up when he predicted their favorite team was gonna get beat like a drum.

People were pretty passionate about high school football back in those days.

growing up, all I could remember was Leonard's Losers and Jimmy the Greek.

We would gather in a dorm room to listen to Leonard's Losers on the radio during happy hour. Old Milwaukee by the case was always on sale at the Red Dot store. His descriptions were quite entertaining.

I grew up in Greenville and I remember the Piedmont Picker
but it wasn't hard to pick Spartanburg wins when Fuller was
there and by a large score. I believe that Sumter beat sptg.
for the State if my memory serves me right. The picker had
to be a local radio personality but which one who knows?

Ahh. I always wondered who it was. I always thought it was Reese Fant.

I thought about that earlier. I'm pretty sure Fuller's Spartanburg team beat my high school 77-7 one Halloween night when I was in middle school.

Ohhh, sorry, I thought this was about Bluegrass.***
