He jad the hot hand today and should have been in the game in crunchtime. Only got 10 carries today to Ship's 18. Mafah had 6.9 ypc to Ship's 3.7. He also did a great job catching out of the backfield. The dude has earned more touches, imo.

Bingo.
He is great but needs to work on becoming a complete back.

To be fair Shipley couldn’t get a hand on anyone to block them today either. Looks like we need two backs to work on becoming complete backs.

No one knows if the same thing wouldn't have happened to Shipley. Maybe it was the bad play call. First coaching mistake was running mafah right after the huge gain.
Mafah has earned more pt period.

Ok. I didn't see who missed the blitz pickup.

I disagree.... Mafah was focused on the blitzing MLB. When the MLB was picked up by the O line, he went out on a route. That is exactly how RBs should protect.... inside to outside. A safety blitzing that is lined up over a WR is not on Mafah. He played that play exactly as he should.
If anything, its on Cade for not seeing that safety coming... but that is nit picking. Its a well-timed blitz called perfectly against a slow developing play.

But… 1) If we are zone blocking there was an OL (RG) who had responsibility for that inside LB blitzing. The RG was not engaged in his zone and would then wait on a stunt or blitz. 2) I just rewatched it slowly, and I don’t think Mafah saw that ILB either. He actually steps left initially with body angled away from the blitz. I think he was watching the DE that dropped into coverage. The blitz that got through actually came from an OLB who showed man coverage on the WR, not a safety.
But honestly, we don’t know, we can only assume based off our experiences. And the point of my response is not he shouldn’t get more time, he’s a stud, it’s just that he did have a pretty critical mistake (educated guess). And to your point, it was a very well designed blitz, and good teams will make their fair share of plays. And it happened so quickly, Mafah would have had to have predetermined he was picking up the OLB pre snap, and there was no sign the OLB was coming, but he never even peeked to that side to check. Again, very well executed.

Didn’t look like they asked him to block on that play
It was a play action and he ran a route through the left A gap
Pressure came from the right B gap

And agree on gaps. But I suspect he was supposed to pick up any blitz, and if none, run a safety valve type route.

His lack of pass blocking caused the fumble TD.

But then how could we keep running Shipley up the middle 14+ times per game?

It’s encouraging to know that he will be with us for two more years (unless the portal grabs him). He definitely is a star in the making. I’d really like to see him in the passing game.
Wonder if he can kick????

NFL is not an option due to lack of speed. Clemson pays more than the working world for 23 yr olds.

Mafah is good. However, he's made three huge mistakes over the last seven games. The fumble on the kickoff against South Carolina that changed the momentum of that game. The fumble at the one yard line against Duke that changed the trajectory of that game. And today's missed block, resulting in a scoop score, which totally changed the game. His mistakes have been disastrous.

Fumble six is on him. Cost us the game. I don't blame the FG kicker.

One play, fumble six or missed field goal, didn’t lose the game. There were plenty of opportunities.

That could pound a D deep into the game but you have to let him and the OL find rhythm and give him the ball more. Blocking comes with being on the field more.
Ship needs a little humble pie and to learn to read a block....you don't run into the line with reckless abandon every handoff.

He's slow as sh*t...both are.
They are very good short yardage backs...we need a speed back that can take those big plays to the house.

If the DJU sitch taught us anything, its that there's a pecking order. And isnt based on who the best players are.
