Wow. Some folks have obviously learned a ton by watching Dabo all these years.
When's the last time you saw Dabo run it up with the starters still in the game late?
He just doesn't. Leaving sportsmanship, and respect for the game and the opponent aside, you're also wasting a ton of developmental opportunities if you do that. Dabo wastes nothing if he can help it.
Live snaps are precious...but they're also risky. Think of it as a game of Battleship.
Every snap that happens, somebody is taking shots at your ships - your players - and every significant injury they take they're going to be carrying with them for awhile, maybe until the end of the season. (Bad ones can last a lot longer than that.)
Mind, it takes a certain number of live snaps - several dozen - before a new player starts visibly losing that deer-in-the-headlights look newbs tend to have. It takes probably a couple hundred before they really start gaining confidence in their role and their effectiveness.
As a coach, you not only want to develop as many players as possible so they're capable of contributing meaningfully if a starter goes down, you're also in a very real sense playing Battleship with your players...you want to keep the "hits" off your starters and spread that abuse out among as many players as possible.
By the end of the season, because of how many guys Clemson players every game, Dabo is basically spreading those "hits" out among three different sets of ships - our 3-deep. It shocks me how few teams have really caught onto this strategy and how important it is, but it's exactly why Clemson is always sluggish in September and is absolutely dominating in November and December; we outnumber our opponents - badly! - and our guys have accumulated vastly less wear and tear per player.
And that's the biggest reason why you don't keep your starters in the game when you're up by 50. Not just because it's the sportsmanlike thing to do, it's also the smart thing to do.

If you have to pass a law to make people do what they should do on their own, it loses the effect.

It's a dumb rule that shouldn't exist. However, since it does exist, the coach lost a chance at a good argument by keeping his starters in late in the game. If he pulled them, he might not have received the suspension. But his lack of judgment on how to manage a rule he knew about, makes the suspension warranted.
