Dave Clawson and the coaching carousel.

He made a few comments about a week ago where he basically admitted that Wake cannot compete at the P5 level due to the NIL and portal.
Seems like this would be a great year for him to tell his agent, "Let everybody know I'm available." Or maybe, at age 56, he'll just take an early retirement and enjoy life. Or maybe, he'll say, "I'll stay here and do the best I can until Wake decides they want a different coach."
I have no idea.
I suspect he will take the first option.
If I were in his shoes I'd definitely take the 2nd option. 56 years old and financially secure. There are a lot of National Parks and hiking trails to take and wildlife to see. That would be my choice.

That is not how successful people are wired. He will either say I’m out of here and look for another opportunity or he will push the powers to be at wake to step up and contribute to a nil fund.

I think he will take the first option. I'll be looking at his name as more seats open on the carousel.
Heck, it could be Houston making a pitch to him. They are in P5. And, if they want to, they have the financial ability to compete with the other teams in the Big 12.

Most highly successful people really like, in some way or another, what they do for a living.
Those type of people truly miss work if they leave voluntarily in the belief that some other type of job (not a charitable calling, but another professional line of work) or hobbies (like coin collecting, bird watching, taxonomy, history, golf, etc) might be worthwhile as a means of ‘experiencing’ more of life.
For a college FB coach at a school that has no chance to truly win big at the highest level (like W.Forest), who knows what is their top trigger?
Really big money (see Elko; left Duke and headed to aTm) along with a legit job where he could really win big would fit most college FB coaches. Big risk of being fired (like Jimbo) and becoming disillusioned with coaching, and thus making the pursuit of non-coaching life options more agreeable.
For a few who really love coaching and aspire to be a ‘forever’ coach (think Bobby Bowden or maybe Kirk Ferentz), then a secure job where on occasion a big season may occur would be perfect for that coach.
Clawson? Who knows? Understandable that any coach would be unhappy about losing players to the NIL portal. That doesn’t mean that the coach in question is ready to give up and enter the worst part of the rat race.

Many people would consider it a success to be able to retire and live comfortably at age 56.

Yeah, option 2 would be nice. He'd get plenty of chances to do media gigs, analysts etc to keep him busy. Especially with his wife going through cancer and beating it, for now...
But, seriously, I heard him a few years ago and he seems to really love the challenge of wake. And he loves the area etc. Either way, hope he stays at wake but I'd love him on our staff. Big fan of Dave.

For sure, I could think of many many schools that don’t have the ambiance (and, in this age, probably a somewhat well behaved student population) as W.Forest.

Some of these guys can’t get it out of their systems. Coaching is life for many of these guys. Mack Brown did not need to coach again. Saban does not need the job and Bobby Bowden could have hung it years sooner as well. I do believe some of these guys are wired a little different.

Clawson is a good coach, and I believe a pretty class act. He would do well at another school.

Yeah he does not seem like a long time coach.
Can’t question his care for football, with him being a college football head coach, but he seems a little too calm during games. Does not seem to have the passion to go until he’s 70.
