As opposed to being in a picked over ACC (a al Big East)

I'm all for it. If FSU goes and we don't get an invite, I say we go for it. I got flamed for bringing it up earlier, but you could control your scheduling and not have to worry about your SOS being dismal because of playing in the ACC.

We could build a national brand with proper scheduling.

4-5 SEC games per year, Florida State, a high-end MAC team, a Sun Belt team, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, an occasional home-and-home with BYU. Free to schedule ourselves for any of these beginning-of-the-season bowl-esque games we're seeing more and more of.
NBC is dying for more college football and was shut out of the Big XII by Fox and ESPN. Clemson could be a great addition to Notre Dame. We could work together with the Irish to set out the season schedule, chopping up home games with the rare double-header.
We'd have to find a landing spot for other sports, though. That's the tricky part. I doubt the ACC/Big East leftovers would take us without football. Dito any other major conference.

You think 4-5 SEC teams would actually agree to play us?

We could keep SCar, and maybe rely on or two early season games like the home-and-home with Auburn and UGA, and the CFA kickoff games, but you aren't going to get 4-5 a year. There's no chance they would want to play us in the middle of their SEC schedule. A lot of them are reluctant to play anyone with a pulse OOC as it is. We could maybe count on 2 SEC games a year, 3 tops.
ND won't play us because they just negotiated a deal to play ACC games which is already forcing them to drop some of their semi-rival games. GT might play us to keep that rivalry going. FSU might play us, but there's also a good chance they wouldn't want to do it regularly since they would have the Big XII schedule + Florida at the end of the year.
How many legit teams are really going to want to play us in the middle of their conference seasons?

we would lose $17 million from the ACC which would be enormous compared to any deal we could swing alone with whom??

Does that money not go away if the ACC fall apart?

We can get more TV money playing quality teams on TV every weekend than a depleted ACC. Without us, FSU, and VT or whoever else leaves there will be no more $17M in TV money.

I don't believe it would be financially viable. With no tv money or shared conference bowl money, you would be left with only ticket sales, donations, and (hopefully) your own bowl money to fund the entire athletic department.

contract, especially if we schedule a decent slate of opponents. Death Valley makes for great television on game day, and TV rights belong to the home team.

Clemson has a dedicated enough following to pull it off. I think it would be a paycut, but BYU has done OK. Have a Clemson network for olympic sports and make a contract with NBC.
Play a handful of SEC or ACC teams and mix in with CUSA/Sunbelt schools as well as the five independents. A schedule could look like this:
Auburn Tulsa Georgia Florida State Southern Miss Georgia Tech ECU Virginia Notre Dame BYU Idaho South Carolina
That's 3 SEC, 3 ACC, 3 Independent, 1 Big East, and 2 CUSA. Not a bad mix

Why would a network want to pick us up? You know why

NBC has a special contract with ND? Because they can broadcast ND games to the entire country and lots of people watch.
They can't broadcast Clemson to the entire country. Few people outside of the southeast give a crap what we do.

home. It's not just Clemson, but Clemson versus a team with a fan base. Some games would obviously carry more value than others. On the flip side, we'd get TV coverage when we played on the road, so our national exposure would be constant yet cover a wider array of distribution.
