Swinney: "We didn't all of a sudden get stupid"

Some notes and quotes from Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's call-in show tonight:
* "We didn't all of a sudden get stupid. We're just getting going honestly. We're not immune to a rough patch if you will and some tough breaks and all these different things. We got a really, really talented group. My advice would be don't listen to that mess. Those are the same people who said we'd never win one (a national championship) -- and certainly with me as the head coach. I wouldn't listen to any of that stuff. I don't read anything. I don't listen to that stuff. I would encourage you (the caller) to do the same. Stay positive. You have every reason to listen to someone who has done it, as opposed to somebody who's sitting around talking about and telling you that we can't do it. We can do it. Hang in there, enjoy the great times and hang in there in the tough times, and in the end, you're going to look back, and you're going to go, 'You know what, this was a great journey and a great ride.' That's the best advice I can give you. We've got great people and a really talented roster, and if you listen to all the other stuff out there, you'll probably think we'll never win another game. But we didn't get here by being stupid. We'll be alright, I promise you. I don't know if that helps or not, but I just say hang in there and keep the faith."
* To a caller talking about being tired of hearing about transfer portal and NIL, Swinney said jokingly, "If we'd stop fumbling that ball, I'd sign everybody out of there, if it meant we don't fumble the ball no more. That's for sure."
* On if Cade Klubnik showed defiance with his call to keep it for a run to end the game at Miami: "One thing I can tell you about Cade, that is one of the most compliant young people you'll ever meet. He's not defiant at all. And it's really only the first time. The other time (the third down throw in OT against FSU), that's coaching. That's on us. We should not have even had a screen option for him. The only thing you're disappointed there for a young person is being a little more situationally aware, but that's on us as coaches. We shouldn't haven't put him in that situation...But this was a situation where he just for whatever reason thought he saw something that he didn't. He made a mistake, but he certainly wasn't defiant. This is a great, great leader and one of the most all-in kids that you could ever want. That's not an issue. Not that we don't address things and all that. I don't want there to be a perception at all because that's so far from reality that it's not even funny. This is, again, a kid that's unbelievably compliant and all in and committed and a great leader. He made a mistake. Sometimes players do that every level, and we correct it and move on. And that's what we'll do in this situation. That kid is going to win a bunch of games, and I want everybody to remember that when we look back on this. He's going to be a great one, and there's a lot of great days ahead for that kid."
* On getting things fixed and the journey: "We sure will...Hopefully, the past 15 years has demonstrated that we've (had) a lot of good days. Had some bad ones too, but it's all part of our journey and this is part of our journey too. What made Frank Howard retire? He said he had 'medical problems -- the alumni was sick of him.' The 1.5% or whatever grows...I'll have to move on somewhere else and get some penicillin or something. I don't know. No, it's great," Swinney said with a laugh.

I was thinking the same thing. It wasn’t all of the sudden. It’s slowly came on for the last 3 years. I hope there are changes coming but I’ve lost some confidence in Dabo along the way.

The reason he gets paid that is because he won 2 national championships and played for 2 others. As well as making 6 cfps. Forgive me if I have more faith in him than you dumb azzez on Tia forum or talking heads who haven’t coached a day in their lives.

Dabo was successful before the portal rules changed, and before NIL became a thing. He wasn’t just successful, it was Dabo and Saban. It was dominance.
Unfortunately, he has not adapted at all to the changes that everyone has to deal with. Not even a little bit. He’s made himself the poster boy for being anti portal, which he is, and anti NIL, which is a false narrative. But perception is reality.
I would say that if he was 4-3 and had brought in guys from the portal at WR, OL, DE, RB, wherever, it wouldn’t be as miserable. Because then you would know he’s used all things available to him to be better.
Now it seems like he is weighed down by stubbornness, awful coaching hires, no talent on offense, players that do what they want, etc.. all those things he brought on himself.

The best quote is that since Dabo celebrated and was well paid for his successes he should be liable to be judged by the same standards when he fails (What exactly has he delivered on the 11 million we paid him THIS year?)

its a little defiant for my taste, defiance can be a good thing in life, so you're not a sheep. however sometimes defiant comes across as bang your head against the wall defiant.
"we didn't all of a sudden get stupid"......so did you get smarter and lose more games? come on coach the logic doesn't add up.

I felt like he was going to retire (at the end of this season) after the Duke game. It seems to me he gets more cynical after each loss. Why try and knock over windmills when you’ve been the best and already set up the family for generational wealth. I hope I’m wrong, but I think he’s gonna step away. What does he have left to conquer?

I dont see the lack of fire from Dabo many others are seeing. Theres other issues, mainly being nepotism and loyalty to seniority. Dabo has self corrected more times than we realize, the guys a winner. I do believe he will do whats necessary to get the most out of this team.

Neither do I. He served up 66.66% of Clemson's national championships. Good enough for me, unless it changes to 75%. Lifetime pass for CDS. Besides, who else are you going to get to replace him, football scholars? WHO MFERS? Crickets...

I don’t think anyone wants him fired. But let’s be honest, he is far from infallible. Sadly, it looks like he needs to absolutely choke on crow to hopefully get the memo that the rest of the sane, rational world can see as self evident. He replaced proven coaches with a lot of duds. The results we are reaping now are the symptoms of the illness. This culture thing he leans on is obviously flimsy crap. He’s created a sycophant vacuum. In my experience, you hire experienced, high character individuals; pay them well; and give them the resources and autonomy to achieve great results. You would’ve thought his Bama MBA covered these basics in a case study somewhere.

Its not filmsy, its still landing recruits. However having so many young coaches that arent proven or have a track record of development makes it alot harder especially with NIL and the portal now involved.

I think his legacy is important to him and he wants to finish off on a high rather than slinking away from a program he built that seems in decline. I think he will be motivated to get things turned back around before he departs.

I certainly trust Dabo to get this fixed. We had a huge run of success and luck for a long long time. Some of the luck we had has just run out for the time being. Things run in cycles, so I expect a little luck to start going our way again before too long. Hard work will pay off in the end. Keep the faith brother... Go Tigers!!!

I stand with this football team, with CDS and his staff. Go back several decades and see how the teams were doing. The sky ain’t falling. Coach is standing by what got the Tigers to championship games. Yes, the college football landscape has changed but he’s going to win again and win the right way. Go Tigers!!

Pig® ... What makes you believe "hard work" is occurring either among coaches or players? Serious question. 2011-2020 built the program. This current group of coaches and players are cashing in on their predecessors' efforts.

1. Defend his record in the past. 2. Continue to ostracize a portion of the fan base, further drawing a line between “good” fans and “bad” fans. 3. Threaten to leave.
Dramatics aside, I do like how he defended Cade.

Love Clemson, love Dabo...but it irritates me to hear the complaint about "listening". I try not to listen at all pre-season, but when I did listen, I heard nothing but praise and how this group was one of the best and most talented. How the o-line was the deepest in years. The defense would be dominating and unrelenting. (I didn't listen to the naysayers as most are just haters). Then I stopped listening and started watching. What I see is vastly different than what I've heard, and it's not even close. Still love Dabo & Clemson and nothing will change that, but talk is cheap. We're proof of that.

Despite the fumbles, a lot of things we do that effect the game are indeed "stupid". Not having our power back in there for short yardage and goalline situations is "Stupid". Going with the 3 man rush on 3rd and long situations to let the QB have all day is "Stupid"! I don't care how you spin it, they are making situational football harder than it has to be and overthinking every lil situation instead of keeping it simple.

Correct me if I'm wrong
Oct 24, 2023, 7:41 PM

But I see two coaches from both the 2016 & 2018 championships still on the staff - Dabo Swinney and Mike Reed. They've done the job at the highest level. Conn joined the staff as Safety coach (new position) in 2017. Goodwin returned to Clemson as an analyst in 2018.
I don't fully understand Swinney's comments about "we". Does he mean himself, Reed and Conn? The rest of staff were not coaches on championship teams.
Completely agree Coach Swinney can take Clemson back to the playoffs with major changes to staff and recruiting/development improvements. And that Cade Klubnik can be a big winner for Clemson.

The trick play didn't cause the fumble. It was simply the runner not protecting the ball which continues this year.
What yhe fumble did do is ensure we never try anything creative like that again even though it had nothing to do with the fumble.
