Confused Marine/Citizen requesting guidance - Ukraine

1

Sep 30, 2023, 9:29 AM

I support spending some of my tax dollars to assist Ukraine.

This means that I am aligned with Democrats and that is my confusion. While I am willing to side with Democrats on some things (issue-to-issue basis), I do not understand why this issue has a party split.

Now … full disclosure … yesterday our Representative’s wife’s letter to the editor stated “Twice Republicans tried to pas the defense funding bill. Twice Democrats aided by five self-serving individuals blocked it.” My research revealed that one of the blocked bills excluded Ukraine funding (I project that that applies to both … I also project that the Ukraine exclusion is the basis for the blocking decision.). Whether those two bills were blocked for that reason or some other reason or a combination of reasons is immaterial … the divide regarding Ukraine funding exists.

Other than the Gulliver’s Travels reason of opposing for the sake of opposing, why oppose assisting Ukraine?

They want Ukraine War Funding as a stand alone bill so the Dems don't pack the package full of PORK!

OK now that sarcasm is out of the way, a serious reply.

There are myriad of reasons to provide oversight and control of military funding for Ukraine. Other than affection for Putin and isolationism, there no strategically legitimate reason to “oppose” funding in cooperation with out NATO to Ukraine.

we are worst than broke
no accounting of where the money to ukraine has gone/going
better spent on our border
europe could provide funding, but they probably know that ukraine is a corrupt nation currently under a dictatorship

Why? Well here are some reasons:

1

1) Avoid foreign entanglements. It used to be an American principle. Trade with others, but don't get involved with their fights. Why? Well, it always comes back to bite us in the end. We lose our bravest young people to the grinder of war, when it was completely avoidable.

2) The Military Industrial Complex. We don't send money to these other countries, we send weapons/ammo. Then we pay billions to defense contractors, and they funnel millions to politicians under the table. This is corruption to the core.

3) They aren't your tax dollars. The government takes them by force, and they are no longer yours. If you really support Ukraine, send them your money voluntarily.

4) Ukraine is a very corrupt country and has only gotten worse since the installation of a NATO-supporting government by Victoria Nuland and the CIA. "Russia bad" doesn't mean "Ukraine good". They are both bad.

5) The government has wasted and squandered so much money that we are $31 trillion in debt or so. So we really don't have the money.

6) I know the government hasn't followed the Constitution in centuries, but just for old time's sake the Constitution does say that the USA shouldn't get involved with wars unless the people have been able to vote on it, meaning that the house of representatives have voted to declare war.

OK back to watching football. I'm sure there are lots more reasons.

There is a sizable chunk of the GOP that is pro-Russia and has no problem with Russia annexing Ukraine. Google “ukraine not a country” and “us senator” for examples.

Not a majority, but you can bet your life there wouldn’t be a Ukraine anymore if Trump had been elected in 2020. NATO would either be defunct or severely weakened also. Don and Vlad’s grand plan.

I will have no issue sending some of my tax dollars to assist Ukraine right after our “leaders” get serious about protecting our own border.
