Comparing Apples To Oranges
Sep 3, 2012, 3:30 PM

In College Football, with the natural high personnel turnover (they are student athletes after all and only around for a few years), teams ARE different each year by default. If you had stable rosters, then you could say last year this, this year that, yada, yada, yada...
So basically it boils down to....
Did we beat them again this year? And the answer is... YES !!!

the strength quys are to be commended for getting all those young guys ready to compete on a fairly high level. defensively, 43 and 12 were very consistent. the dl held their own, but the secondary is not sharp, nor is it gritty and nasty. room for plenty of improvement. remember auburn scored a touchdown that didn't count because the young receiver was just out of the end zone. clemson really dominated the game. by the way, do they do shed drills on a daily basis{you have to be able to shed blockers every play.}

Nice feature but a little unfair to knock the "D". They only

gave up a few big plays, but were much better during the 2nd half. This was Venables 1st game and it was the 1st game of the season vs. Steele being here since 2009. Overall the D was better and that one busted play for a TD is the kind of thing that happens in the 1st game for many teams with a new coordinator. They then played very solidly in the 2nd half. Things would have been a lot harder though had Malzahn been calling the plays for Auburn.

Venables also didn't know what to expect from new OC. But...

I didn't see the OU-UTEP game, but I heard a few pundits on ESPN saying that OU's defense looks much better under Stoops than it did under Venables. Not sure if that's true but it's a bit worrisome. Clemson's D did not look good, and was fortunate that their WR's dropped a few balls and that Frasier isn't a very good QB. Hope BV gets that fixed in time for FSU.

That's interesting because I heard just the opposite...they were talking about OU and said they were lucky to get out of their with a win...and that the defense looked pretty much just like last year...way too many big plays allowed. I don't know maybe it comes down to personnel sometimes more than coaching. I did see BV giving a lot of coaching to the guys on the field when the ball was run his way. He was always there when the play was dead pulling one of the guys over to tell them what they were doing wrong (go back and watch some of the Tre Mason runs...he gets right in Christian's grill a couple of time!). My favorite part of the game was that the defense came out of halftime and improved. To me that is coaching...never seemed to happen with Steele (see the GT and MD games!).

OU only allowed 1 big play so your comment seems odd.

OU allowed one big run (71 yds from about the UTEP 2 yard line). Otherwise the longest run was one for 10 yards. OU only allowed 2 passes for 10+ yards; one for 11 and one for 13. Check out the stats. Essentially only one big play. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=322452638
The ESPN pundits that I heard said that OU was lucky to get out with a win, but because their offense was inept, not their defense. UTEP's offense was held scoreless with their only points coming from a blocked punt return.

Do tell what pundits said it was better?

utep is utep and the oklahoma d was not as impressive as ours by any measure. our d was giving them the mid to long range passing game....the logic that an improved d at Oklahoma is a slight on our coach is childish.

The ESPN pundits said OU's D is faster, more aggressive now.

They didn't mention Brent Venables at all so I don't think they meant it as a slight on Venables. UTEP isn't great but OU's D held their offense scoreless. (UTEP scored a TD on a blocked punt return.) They said that OU's offense (especially offensive line) was much worse than they expected and not worthy of a #4 ranking.
I think it was on either ESPN's BCS Countdown, or ESPN's CFB Daily on Monday. I can't remember which.
Did you watch the game? Did OU's D look worse than last year? How so?

Flame away, but the defense was hot garbage

The only thing that kept Auburn from torching the defense is the fact that Frazier couldnt hit water if he fell out of the boat. He had guys wide open all night long and he just missed them. The defense couldnt stop the run. Auburn's playcaller stopped the run by not running it on every down. but then they saw what we saw, guys wide open every play. If that defense had faced a Geno Smith they would have given up 70 again. one of their RB's averaged 6ypc and the other averaged 7ypc.
