Coach K is probably tiring of the "one and dones", transfer portal, and NIL.

how do you have Zion, RJ and Cameron Reddish and not make a Final Four? And when was the last time that you saw a good Duke scheme? On offense OR defense?

One of the greatest coaches of all time. Took Duke to the highest level. Awesome men went through there and our society is better for it. With him and Coach Williams leaving ACC is getting more winable for other schools.

I know I will be in the minority on here, but I hate for Coach K to retire. He is a great coach and though it was rare I loved when we beat him.

He's been great for the game of basketball.
He's an outstanding coach and ACC basketball won't be the same without him.
I also appreciate how he is gracious in defeat.

Brad is going to run the ACC from Clemson, once Coach K is gone. First Roy, then K!

for his inflated ego. 42 years of coaching and all those victories, and he needs to get his A$$ kissed for the next BB season. I can't even imagine the how many knee pads the NCAA and ESPN will need to buy if Duke makes it past the first round of the NCAA tournament.

and loves coaching, but is getting older and is upset by the negative changes to college sports lately.
He has done a lot for the community in terms of charity work. He's a good guy.

That is along my lines of thinking and is why I posted the link about the D league that starts this Fall. I believe he is staying for 1 more year to coach the incoming guys, then he is done, as the impact of the D league will be at that point in time.

I suspect his age was a minor contributor.
I suspect he peered into the future of college hoops and decide it was time to go. He adjusted to one-and-done, but seemed reluctant. He's probably tired of it. Now, he sees NIL entering into the fray, the transfer portal busting wide open, talk about unionization of players, talk of starting a league that pays high school graduates, not to mention the G-League already doing so.
I suspect he decided he just didn't want to do it anymore in that environment.
I suspect there will be several other 60+ year old guys do the same thing.

If I had the money he has made, I’d retired a couple years ago to travel the globe ?? and enjoy it a little while.

Agree on K leaving due to the changing nature of college basketball. The main reason, I believe, is that you're going to start seeing the top 20 HS players go directly to the G League or other developmental leagues now developing which will pay you $150k or so for the one year transition to the NBA. Without a recruiting class of OAD top 20 talent, the Cal/K system collapses - witness UK and Duke in 2020.
He's got a great class coming in so he's sticking around 1 more year to chase a title. Plus, he wants to take a victory lap around the league and watch every team kiss his a#$.

before mid-season, we will be sick and tired of hearing about the Coach K farewell tour
with a light-blue bias, i prefer the way Roy and Dean did it... quit when you want to. no need to endure a season of 'lasts' and hoopla.
(although Dean later admitted to Roy that he quit a little too soon)

I called this whole thing a year ago. I said Roy will retire quietly after some upcoming season. K will announce his retirement before a season to enjoy a year of K worship. No surprise here.

Wonder if K will maintain an office in the basement of Cameron the way Dean did in Chapel Hill?
