Clemson Path To ACC Championship

4

Oct 9, 2023, 10:45 AM

I apologize if someone has posted this already, but I wanted to layout a realistic look at what it will take for Clemson to make the ACC Championship Game.

1. Clemson Wins Out
2. FSU Wins Out
3. Duke Loses to NC State, FSU, and North Carolina
4. Louisville Loses to Duke and Miami (Clemson would need to be ranked higher in Poll)
5. UNC loses Miami or NC State (We are all cane fans this weekend)

None of these things are impossible. Clemson would hold Tie Breakers over UNC and Miami. We would need to be ranked higher than Louisville, but if we win out we should be. Louisville losing to Kentucky would also help us get over them in rankings. GO Tigers!!!

I don't think being ranked higher is the tie breaker anymore.

According to https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2023/05/17/acc-announces-new-football-championship-game-tie-breakers/

If there is a two-team tie for a spot in the ACC Championship game, there are six different tie-breakers available to break the deadlock.

1. Head-to-head competition between the two tied teams.
2. Win-percentage versus all common opponents.
3. Win-percentage versus common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win-percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish.
4. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents.
5. The tied team with the higher ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games.
6. The representative shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner of Commissioner’s designee.

If there is a three or more team-tie for a spot in the ACC Championship game, there are seven tiebreakers to decide the teams. The ACC will use these tiebreakers to first pick a representative for the Championship game and then once they determine a team, they will use the tiebreakers again for the remaining teams.

1. Combined head-to-head win-percentage among the tied teams if all tied teams are common opponents.
2. If all the tied teams are not common opponents, the tied team that defeated each of the other tied teams.
3. Win-percentage versus all common opponents.
4. Win-percentage versus common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win-percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish.
5. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents.
6. The tied team with the highest ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games.
7. The representative shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner of Commissioner’s designee.

Good analysis.

After seeing Louisville play this weekend, I am not sure they lose 2. However, Brohm was famous for post upset letdowns at Purdue...

Louisville winning or losing to Kentucky would have no impact if we make championship game.

Since we don't play Louisville, the tie breaker if they lose to Duke and Miami would be common opponents win percentage. Those teams we both play are GT, NC State, Duke, Miami. If we win out we'd be 3-1 while they are 2-2. Things get tricker if more than 2 teams are tied. However, the tie-breakers favor Clemson since the Tigers seem to have the toughest conference schedule. Miami and UNC being ranked higher than Duke would help us in those situations.

please this team needs to take 1 game at a time. after Wake game you guys should know this!

Let me tell you why I don't hope for this scenario.

Oct 9, 2023, 11:20 AM

I would love to see that happen but I'd love to draw to an inside royal flush too. It's because I'd watch each of those games as well as I'm able with hopes for my team riding on the outcome. I use to do that and the continual disappointment was crushing.

I'll watch Clemson the rest of the year and put my hope in our players and not someone else's. My hope is much more likely to manifest. We win out the ACC schedule then beat USuCk and win the bowl game and I'm saying it was a good season after that.

I think every game is winnable and every game is possible the rest of the season. I don’t know how it will end, but I do hope the good guys finish at least 9-3. I hope we keep the 10 win season streak intact and to have a shot gotta finish with 9 wins. I’ve been very impressed with Goodwin’s defense this year compared to last and if the offense grows under Riley the same way next year will be a very good year! There’s a chance for a path to the ACC and with the way the year started that’s surprising. As always Go Tigers!!!

You’re right, there is a chance .. unfortunately, less than 1%. Any bowl game other than a mayonnaise or yankee pinstripe would be great.

Thanks for doing this. 1 and 4 and look to me to be the biggest challenges of actually happening. If Duke hadn't lost their QB, I would add 3 but now they are vulnerable.

thats not a good tie scenario as Duke is one of the few

teams that we need to hang an L on UL so they would have beaten both of us H2H. Better 3 way is CU,Miami, UL or maybe CU, UNC, UL or CU, UNC, Duke or 2 way with just UL

Yep go ahead and give that pipe dream a rest. We blew that chance after game 1. Hoping to see some much needed improvement throughout the rest of this season and get back to form next season. Thought after the Fla St. and Syracuse games things were progressing them BAM Wake Forest happened. Now I’m back to feeling like I did after the Duke loss.

The only we are going to the ACC Championship is to buy a ticket. Our offense is putrid and we have horrible special teams.
