So Ohio State was a 35 point favorite over NIU....

and squeeks out a narrow 20 - 13 win at home remains a concensus No. 1 while Clemson wins on the road against a team in a Power 5 conference and drops in one poll?

Clemson dropping didn't have much to do with their loss.

Their result was pretty "status quo". The drop was due to LSU, Ole Miss, and ND jumping them, due to wins by those teams being perceived as greater than "status quo".
If Louisville were 2-0 going in instead of 0-2, different story, probably.
That said, the polls are still dumb at this point. Need at least 4-5 games to really start evaluating teams well.

Well, I think clearly

voters didn't think poorly enough of Ohio St., or well enough about a team under them, to displace them at #1.
They did lose #1 votes, so they "dropped", but not enough to lose the #1 spot.

NIU is normally pretty good but Oh St should have dropped. This is the media orchestrating a halo effect from last year. OH ST may improve but they are about a C= team now with regards to the talent level there

We didn't drop because of anything we did or did not do

we dropped because LSU blasted Auburn and Ole Miss won @Bama. Anyone that didn't see this coming doesn't know how the polls work (and have for my entire life time).

Doesn't matter, we have every opportunity in front of us

Beat ND and GT, we will be top 5. Beat FSU on top of that and we will be in position to make the playoffs. We control our own destiny at this point. Lose one of those games and life gets much more difficult.
