ACC need to give ND choice join in all or get out UConn shld

Apr 8, 2014, 1:13 AM

Being the ACC this would make first super conference

If ND want then get WV and take noTV rights for next 10 years or however long it is

You obviously do not understand the situation.
Give Notre Dame the choice!
Notre Dame sets the rules, not the ACC.
Notre Dame doesn't need the ACC(not in football anyway).
They agreed to enter into a deal where they get to play 5 ACC games yearly( they almost allways play B.C.,and Miami),giving them an easier slate of games outside of ACC power teams Clemson,FSU,maybe UNC)which they do not play every year.
It benefits Notre Dame, not the ACC.
The ACC got nothing out of it except egg in the face!
WV is another matter.I think they would tell the ACC to go to h#!!.

Dude..at this point WVU would crawl naked over burning

Ole Barker. The ND half a-ed deal is his little gem.

Having Notre Dame in for non-football makes a LOT of money for the ACC.

Forcing Notre Dame to play five ACC teams a year helps the ACC and does absolutely nothing for Notre Dame. If you assume that the ACC was NEVER going to be able to get Notre Dame on full-time this year (a valid assumption given that many have tried and no one succeeded), then forcing them to schedule five games a year is a huge benefit for the conference. We will fill stadiums and get more national exposure.

I'm not saying that I don't favor giving them the boot. There's a certain lack of dignity to this half-azzed approach. I would gladly take an enthusiastic West Virginia administration/fanbase over a "We'll get back to you" Notre Dame fanbase. But I'm not fighting to keep the conference alive and I'm not answering to 14 university presidents.

And West Virginia would move heaven and earth to get into the ACC. You are on crack if you think ANYONE associated with that school is happy in the Big 12.

if academics were an issue of allowing west Virginia into the acc then why allow Louisville into the conference? they are not good enough to be in our conference but we choose their president to be our new president. swofford and the acc members made a mistake in not taking wv as a member and allowing nd to not join as a full member imo. I don't think nd will ever become a full member of the acc.

The ACC "screwed the pooch" with WVU and they know it

Apr 8, 2014, 10:30 AM

They didn't want to make the same mistake with Louisville.

It's just that simple.

I think the issue is one of timing.

Apr 8, 2014, 10:44 AM

When WVU was a viable option, we were sitting back and picking off programs one by one. We were picking and choosing, weighing the culture, academics, athletics, geography, markets...etc, etc. Then Maryland happened and all the news could talk about was "Is this the end of the ACC?" and "Which school leaves next?" Urgency took over. We needed a strong program fast. Academic integrity took a back seat to "stopping the bleeding". In that context, getting Louisville was a coup. They have fantastic sports. And yes, their academic reputation pales in comparison to any other ACC member, but I think being a member of the ACC will help them bridge the gap to some degree.

At some point ND will join the ACC in football....

Apr 8, 2014, 9:02 AM

With conference expansion and independents having an increasingly more difficult time scheduling quality opponents, it's inevitable.

"With conference expansion and independents having an increasingly more difficult time scheduling quality opponents, it's inevitable."

No it is not.
That is why ND jumped at the chance to fill almost half their schedule with ACC teams every year. Notre Dame will remain an independent football program as long as they continue to get more money from TV revenue than any conference can provide them. A very unique situation for them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You do realize that's not a long term permanent arrangement***

If ND has to join the ACC in football I could see UConn being the 16th team. The ACC could pick them up any time it wants.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we went to 16, we would have several to pick from.

Apr 8, 2014, 10:21 AM

Any AAC member would jump at the chance.

UConn certainly.
South Florida in a heartbeat.
Central Florida definitely.
Cincinnati basically has their application filled-out.

And any other we would want...but we wouldn't want any of them (although Temple is an interesting situation...why does everyone crave the NYC market but COMPLETELY ignore the Philly market?).

Similarly:

West Virginia would love to be in the ACC, if we could work it out with the Big 12 (but we probably couldn't).

Navy would be a great fit geographically and academically, and would reclaim some of the DC market and make ND happy.

There would be tons of choices. I wish we could have picked up Rutgers (if we were going to 16) but that ship has sailed.

If we can get Notre Dame, I hope we'd go after Penn State next

Apr 8, 2014, 10:25 AM

ahead of any of the other schools you mentioned.

Agree 100%. Obviously it's a tough sell...

Apr 8, 2014, 10:51 AM

Penn State makes excellent money in the Big Ten and plays a lot of schools that may not be regionally similar, but culturally similar (huge state schools with huge football stadiums). Having said that, I do believe that they weren't thrilled with being attached to the midwest and would have been interested in aligning themselves with the premier east coast conference.

All that took a big hit when the Big Ten added Rutgers and Maryland. Now PSU has some play things in its neighborhood. The divisional restructuring also put a damper on this one - Penn State now plays Maryland, Rutgers, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State every year. A couple close programs and a few huge programs. The only one that they don't play every year is Nebraska...Penn State can live with that.

So, yes, I hope that's the first phone call they make, but I'd be shocked if it was fruitful.

UConn needs to improve academically

Apr 8, 2014, 9:20 AM

and, show that they can sustain that improvement in order to become an ACC member. But, then again, they took Syracuse (and then there's the train wreck that is UNC):

"The University of Connecticut and APR Penalties

A number of Division I basketball teams have been penalized for APR numbers below the minimum, but the highest-profile APR casualty by far is the University of Connecticut. The 2011 national champions were hit with scholarship restrictions for the 2011-12 season after their four-year aggregate APR fell to a dismal 893 - the second-lowest score of any football, men's or women's basketball squad in a BCS conference, and the Huskies will be banned from postseason play in 2013.
Connecticut's problems are due, in large part, to the departures of Darius Smith and Jonathan Mandledove, who left the school after the 2009-10 season with poor academic standing. The Connecticut basketball team's APR for that season was just 826.

Syracuse, Cal State-Northridge, Chicago State, Grambling, Louisiana-Monroe and Southern are some of the other basketball schools that have been hit with penalties for poor APR performance. Southern was the first school hit with a postseason ban in both basketball and football.

Examples:
The University of Connecticut will be banned from participating in the NCAA Tournament or Big East Tournament in 2013 because of a poor Academic Progress Rate. The Huskies' two and four-year average APR is well under the minimums of 930 and 900."

Apr 8, 2014, 10:30 AM

IMO - when the playoff system kicks into full gear, and they insert a rule that you have to win your conference to be allowed into the NCG, then ND has to make a hard decision. They will join the ACC, kicking and screaming, and we can move forward as one of the 'super-conferences'.
