Indirectly, this rumor may have substance....

Texas Tech fans seem to want current Texas A&M offensive coordinator and Red Raider alum Kliff Kingsbury.
This would leave an opening at Texas A&M for offensive coordinator.
Coach Morris is an A&M alum.
It wouldn't be the most surprising thing I've seen.

In my personal opinion, Chad was never a serious threat to leave for any of the previously mentioned openings. They just didn't seem to me to fit his background.
With the current crop of possibilities being a head coach opening in Lubbock, Texas with a QB who was previously coached by CCM, or a domino effect that opens a cordinator position at his alma mater, with Johhny Football for at least two more years, a head coach auditioning for the NFL, and where they actually have the resources and fan support to pay him more than Clemson, then I start sensing that conditions are ripe.

If it's for more money, at his alma mater as a head coach in waiting?
I could see him making that lateral move.

They just hired Sumlin last year

How is he going to be HC in waiting? Also we already pay him more than any OC in the country.

Sumlin grew up in the midwest and has no real ties to A&M.
His name has been floated as a possible NFL head coaching target and he has long said that that is his ultimate goal.
His coaching background shows a guy willing to move frequently, even laterally when the opening was at a more prestigeous employer.
If A&M values continuity to futureproof their new found relevance on the national college football stage, if they think that Sumlin is a danger to move to the NFL, if A&M wanted to give Chad a chance to grow into the role of head coach at A&M, then it would make sense.
These set of circumstances worries me more than any that were floated previously. That's all I'm saying.

Sumlin was on staff and was the OC for RC Slocum on the back half of Slocum's last year. He's bounced betweent TX and OK, but I don't see your theory as completely ridiculous.

wanting him 6.5 mil to buy out his remaining 5 years under contract from Clemson, plus whatever they are going to pay him the first year (i'm assuming 1.3 mil or more because why would he leave clemson for less pay?)
in other words, HC or no go.

Exactly...a $6.5 million dollar buyout after this year if he

makes a lateral move is way too high of a price for any school to even consider. The only ways Morris leaves is for a HC position, and I don't think that offer will come this year from a major program.

If Clemson had a two year window where they had a very good chance to come out of the nationally perceived stongest college football conference and contend for a BCS Championship, but the offensive coordinator was hired away and it required coming up with $6.5 million to bring in an offensive coordinator that fit the talent and facilitated continuity, do you think the powers that be could make it happen for the Tigers?
I'd like to think they could.
Texas A&M might be in just that position, except for the fact that they are in a better position than Clemson with regard to overall state, university and booster monies.

What your proposing would double the cost basis of what is already the most expensive offensive coordinator in all of college football. They would be spending more on him than all but the 25 highest paid head coaches in football. It is an absurd proposition.

If it was anywhere but Texas, I would also consider it outside the realm of possibility. However, Texans don't have a problem with going over the top. In fact, they usually relish in doing it.
All of MY worry, of course, is less about Texas Tech and more about A&M getting in a position where it's late in the recruiting process, they feel they need Chad to have they're best shot during a small window and they're willing to overpay for the privilege of rolling the dice for a crystal football..

Chad's hardly the only OC in college football and significantly less than you're talking about gets just about any one of them. Texas A&M is no Ohio State and even Ohio State had to walk away from Morris' salary - and that was before the buyout! Fans might get like getting crazy with that kind of money - but public school administration won't. You also have to realize that significant portions of head coach salaries come outside the University - endorsement packages, coaches' show royalties, etc. 100% of the assistants salaries are paid by the University - they would be paying him more than Kevin Sumlin. I don't think you need to worry about this one.

If offered I think he would bolt for TT. His old stompin' grounds, his old QB, and a conference where they mostly run his style of offense and don't play much D.
Yikes!

A chance at a home state HC job in a good conference. If they offer he will go.

Isn't Texas Tech in the $2-$3 million range?
He is the second coming of Bob Stoops and, frankly, I am surprised Tennessee did not snap him up.
He is that good. With power runners to complement his passing attack, there is no limit to his potential, in my opinion.

Mac Davis had a top 10 song that said just that....I think it was called "Lubbock In My Rear View Mirror."
