Another reason Dabo may not be starting Klubnik
Dec 2, 2022, 8:46 AM

I was thinking about why Dabo has been holding Klubnik this year and I had a thought that I haven't heard about this year.
What if Dabo is trying to protect him and not break his confidence? Hear me out. One of the reasons that DJ has not been good has been the pieces around him haven't been very good.
I believe we can all agree that the O-line hasn't been great, the WRs have been absolutely horrible, and the scheme and game plan are leaving something to be desired.
With all of those issues, it wouldn't be a good environment to cultivate a new QB. Perhaps Dabo is holding him until he absolutely has to play him so that he can develop in a safe environment.
I don't know if that would be the right thing to do or not, I don't know the kid. However, if that is the plan, it makes more sense to me.

I'm not sure why everyone tries to overthink this. Dabo obviously thinks Klubnik isn't ready. He obviously thinks Uiagalelei gives them the best chance to win. It's no more complicated than that.

DJU was playing poorly against Syracuse.
When Cade got in the game, he did OK, but nothing truly meaningful.
Remember, that key 3rd and long conversion (hmmm ... who was our QB to get us in that 3rd and long?) was successful only because of a dubious roughing penalty when Cade was close to being out of bounds, but had not yet crossed the sideline when he absorbed the ~ medium (not vicious) hit.
His 2 point conversion pass and movement in and out of the pocket, on the other hand, was a thing of beauty.
That play has been Cade's signature 'great moment' this year. Everything has has been average (or worse).
I still think he'll be a fine QB one day, just like Kenny Pickett wasn't much good for a while, but was a study as a 5th year senior.

Wonder how many times DJ has been chased out of the pocket and thrown for a completion this year? I imagine the number of times could be counted on one hand.

And DJ played poorly against UofSC and crickets on Cade?? I don't know, but I'm still pissed for lack of offensive adjustments in the 2nd half by Streeter and Dabo. You can't continue to allow the DE to crash inside to stop the run without using speed to the outside to stop him. A QB with Cades speed would have been 4 to 5 yards down the field before 1st contact. After a couple of those runs, the roll out passing attack kicks in gear.

I posted the breakdown previously. We were winning until

10 minutes left in the game. At that point, it wasnt time to insert a new QB.
DJ led 3 drives from there. On the middle drive he threw a terrible INT, and would have been yanked if not for so little time left in the game. Wasn't the time to insert not-yet-ready true freshman. On our last drive DJ missed an open dude down the middle. We would have had one more possession starting at midfield and needing a 1st down or two for a game winning FG. That would have been DJ as well, but Williams' fumble was all she wrote.

If thats our best chance we are hosed next year. To surmise that Cade, a full year into the system, still cannot produce better results than we saw last Saturday.....well....Ive got some beach front in Nebraska for you.

You understand it perfectly.
Clemson is a 'win now' team, and Dabo (who has seen DJU and Cade a lot more than any of us on TNet, and who knows infinitely more about football than any of us) believes that DJU is better capable of producing wins than Cade.
It would be one thing if we were a 5-7 team. It's another since we are a 10+ win team.

I don't know if I agree with that. Yes, we are most certainly a win-now fan base, but Dabo has shown more commitment to doing what is best for the program and the team long term than he has shown is a "win now" coach.
Those "win now" coaches you are talking about, typically are the win at all costs type, and that has never been Dabo. He recruits for culture, doesn't use the transfer portal much, and hires people that are better people than they are coaches.
I am not advocating for this, I think there should be a balance between "win now" and program building.

I’d like to believe that but Dabo isn’t blind. Neither are the fans, media and even our opponents. It’s either stubbornness, ego or past promises made. Most know the deal, to the others, just keep drinking the Kool-Aide and nod.

I don't agree with any of this.
Clemson is not, and never has been, a "win now" team. You want to win, but you also want to develop depth and build experience for future games. Our doing that, especially with a vanilla playbook (when we had a legitimate playbook), has almost cost us games in the past. Dabo has NOT seen DJ or Cade more than us in game situations. Considering I watched every one of their high school games as well after they had committed to us, I'd argue I've seen them more. How they do in practice has very little relevance to how they play in game situations. I don't care that DJ plays well when he can't be touched against our secondary. I care how he cannot complete a single pass past the line of scrimmage against South Carolina's. As for this infinite knowledge, that remains to be seen now that he can't lean on Venables and Scott.

He committed to Clemson knowing DJ was a 5star that would play through his Junior year. Same with when DJ came to Clemson under Trevor.
It's just the way it is. There is nothing wrong with patience and commitment

We'll see this commitment once the portal opens up and the season ends. Were I Cade's dad, I'd be looking at it seriously. Commitment is a two-way street, and I know for a fact Dabo has promised that every position is up for grabs. We now know that was a lie.

Once again our OL pass blocking hasn’t been bad this year, way better then our average. Now their run blocking needs major help.

Look at what was done to him in the ND game and then think about confidence. Even the announcers doing the game couldn’t understand just benching the kid after a big mistake. Just go sit back down and get some more splinters in your butt.

You want to put your young talented QB in a position to be successful. At ND, they put him in on the goal line and rolled him left against the grain, which is how he got picked and gifted ND more points.
That’s not on Cade, that’s coaching. They likely didn’t put him in against scar because they feared putting him in another bad spot.
Remember TLaw got more shots because we were up more. DJ has not only hurt the offense, he’s applied pressure to the defense as well, so our development with getting guys game experience has suffered, which also has impacted recruiting, especially now that other teams are pushing/NIL etc.
I put this on coaching, for putting one player who is not a spread QB and can’t even go through progressions, above all these things.
When he gets pulled vs UNC that will be the end of this sad saga. I wish him all the best.
