Why doesn't Brownell ever recruit shooters?
Feb 9, 2020, 8:59 PM

When the 3 pt shot is so important to his offense?
I've heard cause they won't come here.
We'll, looking at the NCAA stats, there are a buttload on this list that would come here. He should always have 2 sharp shooters but he always goes for d players

I agree, but I think Hemenway, Dawes, Hunter, and Honor, should do better next year. Maybe Tyson and Baehre cant hit some 3's next year too. I think we will be much improved next season.

That's funny Junk Yard, but we did win this championship two years ago and may, just may, win it this year (say, by winning the NIT).

Brad has a unique approach to recruiting. He's realized it's much simpler to recruit guys who cant shoot. Honestly, he's kind of a trailblazer in his offensive approach as in it doesn't center around scoring

Recruiting has been an obvious weakness under Brownell.

Particularly outstanding scorers. We have only had two 1st team All-Conference players in 9 years under Brownell. That's a big part of the reason we are consitently mediocre. And before somebody points out the fact that we've never, under any coach (except Tates Locke) attracted top level talent, I say don't use our sorry past as some kind of acceptable standard. And as has been pointed out, even a lot of smaller schools we play have players that can burn up the net.

And zero first round picks under Brad
Feb 9, 2020, 10:20 PM
|

only 2 guys drafted. First round talent recruited by Clemson coaches: Tates had Tree with Wise an ABA first rounder, Foster had Nance, Horace and Harvey with Campbell, Billy Williams, Fred Gilliam, Murray Jarman and Vinnie Hamilton also drafted, Cliff had Elden, Davis and Wright with Whitney and Devin Gray also drafted, Barnes had two drafted, Buck and Jamison in 4 years, Shyatt had Will Solomon as a first rounder and Sharrod Ford drafted, OP had Trevor as a first rounder.
Brad? KJ, JB both 2nd rounders. Grantham a free agent.
And Brad has had the longest tenure

Devin Gray was not drafted.
Harold Jamison was not drafted.
Will Solomon was a second round pick...not a first.
Sharrod Ford was not drafted.

Think his philosophy is try to win the game 10 - 9 but somehow we typically manage to lose it 11 - 10 ......because the other team always has at least one player that can shoot better than our guys.......no matter how bad the guys on the other team actually are......Go Tigers!!!!

"Capable with the ball as a shooter"
Recruited the #1 player in SC and both recruits for 2020 are 4 stars. The man was in THE TOP FREAKING 3 for Zion Williamson, only for coach K and Duke's checkbook to rip him away.
Even Zion's dad said he was obsessed with Clemson.
We had two straight 20 win seasons, beat UNC in chapel hill this year, have a sweet 16 appearance. OP never won one tournament game.
Only 1 coach in Clemson history has gotten it done in Chapel Hill, he will be the coach in 2021.

UNC is below .500 it was a great thing no doubt but how many of those games we lost were to a UNC team below .500? We were in the top 3 for Zion because he was in our back yard. Hopefully Hall will be as good as advertised. TB came in 2nd in the Atlantic the 2 years before he was fired btw. Sometimes being okay isn't good enough.

like 19 points or something (in a close loss) in a furious 2nd half rally - couldn't miss from 3 - then nada til senior year.

sometimes, the media guide is your friend. I took a look thru and looked at the shooting % of some of the guys who IMO would be in the discussion of "great shooters" at CU. a couple disclaimers. first, the distance has changed a couple times, so it isn't always apples to apples. a few guys played when there was no 3 point shot. a couple on this list (Abraham, fred gilliam, anthony jenkins) were kind of "stretch forwards", so their % might be skewed a little by the fact that they also played inside some. a couple (ed scott, will solomon, zatezalo) played on teams where they had to shoot a lot, so maybe they had to take some bad shots skewing their % down. you make your own conclusions on how many great shooters we've had. first number is over all %, 2nd # is 3 pt %

years back where CBB claimed his wife was calling him out on this very thing, and it supposedly changed his recruiting tactics. Apparently that pivot is taking a while to manifest.
