Clemson dining

Newbie here. Was just reminiscing about my days at Clemson and where my friends and I would eat. Saw some posts here, but all are archived and no longer open for discussion. I felt compelled to share my thoughts with a bunch of strangers!

I was there for grad school from 2002-2009. It was still mostly locally-owned places then. I believe Moe's was the first chain to come into downtown, and that was near the end of my time there. (I take that back, there was a Mellow Mushroom when I first got there)

My go-to places were Ancheaux's and Todaro. A friend of mine liked going to Tiger Town. They used to have a pretty good menu, and a bunch of the items were named after other ACC programs, and there was one for South Carolina. TDs was also a good lunch place. I was never particularly partial to Keith Street, but it was a favorite for some folks, so I'd go there ocasionally.

Ancheaux's was the hot place for much of my time there. The line would be out the door at lunch most days. People loved their burritos, but I pretty much only ever got the blackjack with the awesome homemade chips. A husband and wife owned it, and I'm pretty sure they homeschooled their kids, because there was always a kid doing school work at a table in the front corner. Part of the way through my time, they decided to move and sold the place to one of their workers (guy with a beard). Sadly, it didn't last too long after he took it over, maybe a year or so. The last time I ate there was with my mom and girlfriend (now wife) the day I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation. That may have been the last time I ever ate there. I moved a couple months later. Came back the next year to visit and saw it had turned into some generic chain burger place. It's too bad. It was a classic and was extremely popular. Unfortunately, the new owner just let it go. I'd kill to come back and have a blackjack with the chips!

When I first got to Clemson, I went to Peppino's most of the time. Then I discovered Todaro and liked it a lot better. That was the other go-to for me and my friend at lunch. Chris, the owner, was cool guy and got to know him a little bit. It was nice to come in and have him know your name. For a brief time they opened up a second location on Old Greenville Highway, up near where the Hardee's is. It was more of a dine-in spot than the downtown location, and it was really convenient to my apartment, so that was nice. The pizza wasn't quite as good...the crust just wasn't the same. I don't recall it lasting more than a few months. They eventually started having a lunch buffet at the downtown location. On the raro occasions that I'm able to make it back, I always stop in for a slice at Todaro, but it's been several years now. Sadly, last time I was in, Chris didn't recognize me. I was not surprised, of course (I'm much grayer and have less hair now), but it was the first time I'd been in that he didn't recognize me.

Tiger Town was next up. I don't recall what I used to get there, but I think it was the NC State option. My friend always got the Incredible Fulk, which if I recall was a rebuen with broccoli on it. It had thousand island dressing and he would always ask for it without the broccoli. One of the last times I was there, I made plans to meet up with a friend there and was bummed to see they had mostly done away with lunch. Instead of ordering from a waitress, you ordered at a small window and they only had a handful of options.

Which leads me TD's. They were always good. I usually got the patty melt and tots there or sometimes the quesadilla. Last time I was there and found TTT no longer did much of a lunch, we went to TD's. They still had the patty melt, more or less, when I went back, so that was nice. It didn't come with grilled onions any longer, but I asked if they could add it and they did.

There was a nice little place around the corner from TD's that we went to less often. For the life of me I can't recall the name of it, but they had hummus is all I can recall. I think they later became Shadow of the Valley. It's now Palmetto's Smokehouse and Oyster Bar (according to Google Maps).

I don't bemoan progress, but it is a bummer to come back not recognize much of anything. Kids just have different tastes these days I guess, and that's fine. I really liked the college town feel it had when I was there, but I didn't much of that vibe from it when I was there last time. Of course, I'm sure it feels like a college town to the kids who are there now. I try to look at Google maps and find old places we'd go, and I can't even hardly find any landmarks that I recognize, haha. Time marches on!

Ah, well, the memories will just have to live in my head!

I worked at Ancheauxs after the ownership change, it really was a great place. New ownership was focused on the wrong things. I miss that place so much and I’m still friends with several of the other folks that worked there with me. The owner has been pretty much MIA since he closed down.

I remember Coach Rumph was a big fan and always ordered to-go lunches for the coaching staff when it was his turn to pickup. Thomas Austin, Tyler Grisham, Khalil Greene were all regulars during my tenure, Khalil even after he went MLB and would come back for training. Trevor Booker came in once or twice but not regularly. I also remember how often I would get preached at by middle eastern students about how wrong we made our hummus, lol.

When moes showed up it was a dagger, new students every year meant in about 4 years our customer base pretty much completely migrated. I also recall the GT gameday pretty much broke everyone’s spirit, I’ve never worked so hard in my life. The new owner went out and bought a case of beer that we drank while we tried to put the restaurant back together than night. That honestly seemed like another monumental shift in the mentality of whether or not a bunch of kids could keep the place running against a corporate entity like moes.

It was dysfunctional but I loved it. Southwestern burrito or a black jack, all day every day. I just want to find another place that steams the burrito after it’s rolled and wrapped. And I have to hold my tongue every time I watch a kid do a lame job rolling me a burrito. Sorry, you brought back some old memories.
