Also have a daughter soon off to school, bittersweet

Her destination to CU was predetermined at birth until the decision to pursue music arose. We went for a visit this past Friday to Winthrop. She liked it, and I was underwhelmed. Of course, I was comparing it to my Alma mater. She loves CU, but nothing music related is offered.
From day one, I envisioned her as my legacy. Sadly, that will not happen. On the bright side, it looks like the scholarships will fully cover the ride. She will minor in a business related field in order to hopefully provide for herself after graduation.
And yet, I still need your prayers, consolation and encouragement.

Don't write off your legacy just yet. I have a daughter that went to another school because Clemson didn't offer her field of study. However, she is at Clemson in grad school now and she just got to experience her first big time football season as a student. Now we have another thing in common -- we were both in Clemson when we won National Championships.

I tried everything I could to get my daughter to choose Clemson...and choosing Winthrop has proven to be a FANTASTIC decision for her. Hopefully it will be for your daughter, too. Open your mind and try to be supportive of her decision. There is a lot to like about Winthrop.
By the way, I still get to be a Clemson dad...my son starts there this fall.
Hope your daughter loves Winthrop as much as mine does.

One of my children will probably never have a Clemson degree

But what's important is that she does something she loves, is good at, and can make a living doing. And most importantly that she doesn't become a chicken.
Both of us can be happy as long as our daughters are. There's so many kids out there that aren't.
Cheer up. And be happy she wants to go to college, she can, and you don't have to foot the bill for it.

Winthrop is an excellent university. I did my graduate studies there and it has an outstanding music program with a national reputation. Rock Hill is a growing city with close access to Charlotte. In other words the school has a lot to offer.
Clemson obviously is a superb institution and perhaps your daughter can attend in some other manner, but as a professor at another school I would encourage you to support her efforts in every way possible.

is the sister school to Clemson. I graduated from Winthrop and it was an excellent school for me. I still visit every year. I met my wife there and have no regrets.

My step daughter went to Winthrop. The campus was underwhelming but they do have a good business program. Good luck to you and yours, and, you never know, she may surprise you and get her masters from Clemson.

Smart kid(one C in her entire school history, and that was PE), eighth in her graduating class, would have been second but for that C that most colleges ignored(first is pre-Med at Vandy). She was pursued like major football players by many schools, except CLEMSON! NYU, Chicago, Emory, Ivy League schools, and USC-Eastern(which offered to PAY HER to be in their honors college). Three of her best friends(also considered my daughters) got full rides to Clemson, but they never contacted her until after she got the full ride to Emory, in spite of visiting with her buddies. She had gotten lost in their system and now (too late), they came offering with a full ride. I think she was sold on Emory anyway, but Clemson effed that one up.
