ACC or SEC? Top to Bottom, Which is Better?
Sep 26, 2012, 9:14 PM
|
|
Okay - in response to the debate over whether or not FSU can compete in the SEC (and whether or not we could, too), I've decided to apply logic and a points system to see how the teams stack up. Points are either gained or lost based upon win/loss, with more points going to better opponents. Also, we've taken spread into account to tackle performance.
Check it out and let me know your thoughts.
We're not trying to reinvent the wheel, but at the same time, hopefully we can help bring logic and fairness to the debate.

Thanks again - I'm pretty stoked about this, especially going forward.

While the sample size is small, it still gives a pretty good indicator of how a team has performed.
We're a third of the way through the season and you can see the cream rising to the top.

You are kidding with this topic. LSU, Alabama, GA, USC, Florida, Miss State are all in top 25. Past 6 national champs are from SEC. No comparison

I clearly state in the article, and the rankings bear it out, that the SEC is better at the top. But you can easily debate top to bottom as the middle and bottom of the SEC is below mediocre.

system would hold more weight if the 2nd best acc team and 2nd worse sec team had not already played a very close game. oh, and that part where lsu isnt a top 4 sec team stands out a little too.

Thanks for the feedback. In this scenario, Clemson beating Auburn is no different than USC beating Vandy or Missouri. Also, Clemson covered the spread against Auburn, something LSU couldn't do, which is reflected as well.
For what it's worth, in my opinion, LSU is not a top 5 team. They'll need some offense soon and won't be able to find it.

Which to me says that the system either has Auburn too low, or LSU and Clemson too high, or there is very little difference in the top teams and bottom teams. Not sure any of those are true, though.
It is an interesting system, though, and I look forward to seeing the results as the games play out.

Usually you make half-way-decent, albeit obviously biased

[ in reply to Re: ACC or SEC? Top to Bottom, Which is Better? ] |

arguments. this is not one of those times. everyone knows the transitive property doesn't apply to college football. using your own absurd logic, did you forget that game last weekend where the "2nd worse" sec team barely lost to the 2nd best team? or the fact that your team hasn't beat the "2nd worse" team in like 100 years? or the fact that the "2nd worse" team beat your squad like a rented mule in the most lopsided loss in SECCG history (worse than the orange bowl)? just sayin'.
that said, I agree it's a stupid discussion. the SEC is loads better all around.
God tier: Bama, LSU Great tier: UGA, FL, Scar Meh: AU, Miss St?, Tenn, Mizz, A&M Utter garbage: Ken, Vandy, Ark, Ole miss
God tier: FSU? Great tier: Clemson Meh: VT, GT, MD, Miami, UNC, Miami, UVA, NCSU Utter garbage: Duke, Wake, BC?
I dunno, that's my take. It's tough. The SEC is way better at the top, like the OP says. At the bottom it's a little more murky. FSU in the god tier is kinda without any precedent so that's a stretch. Bama probably needs their own tier at this point.

Good try but just don't see it at all

1) FSU is a darn good football team. I don't think they are as good as Alabama or LSU, but I think they are right there nipping at their backside right now. They clearly belong in that discussion to me.
2) I am not sure your points factors make a lot of sense. UVA did beat Penn State- but I couldn't give anyone credit for beating Penn State.
3) Tennessee is ranked 8th in your poll in the SEC, and NC State is 6th in the SEC. Tennessee looked a lot better to me than NC State did when they played recently.
4) I think it's impossible to tell how bad the worst teams are right now in either league. That will be clear in another 3-4 weeks I think.

Thanks for the feedback.
I agree FSU is a good football team and I think/hope the numbers bear it out with more games. What it's doing now is rewarding teams for their scheduling, a la Florida.
Since the UVA game, Penn State had beaten a decent Temple team and crushed a soso Navy team. They may even win their first B1G game this weekend. I think UVA ends up being terrible
Tennessee is being penalized for struggling against Akron and taking it on the chin from Florida while NCSU had won three straight since then
I agree on the bottom teams. I think there will be a huge gap between the mediocre teams and the bottom, from both conferences
Thanks again

FSU might beat LSU- but LSU has a very strong defense.
Hard to predict what FSU would do against a very good defensive team.

fsu has playmakers at the rb and wr positions, along with a vastly improved ej manuel- a sr. at qb. their return game is very good, also. lsu is starting a true freshman at qb.both have outstanding defenses. imo, it would be a relatively low scoring game with fsu winning by 3-7 at baton rouge and 10-14 in tally.

NC state will finish better than Tenn, NC state always plays a lot better at the end and are always slow starters. So by the end of the year they will be better than Tenn. Also Tenn will have 2 losses sat to NC state 1

It is interesting to see how the AQ leagues have done against each other early in the year. The sample size is small, but the results are the results.
The SEC is 0-1 vs the Big 12. The ACC is 0-3. The SEC is 1-1 vs the Big 10. The ACC is 1-1. The SEC is 2-0 vs the Pac 12. The ACC is 0-1. The SEC is 0-2 vs the Big East. The ACC is 2-3 The SEC is 1-1 vs the ACC. The ACC is 1-1 vs the SEC.
The SEC is 4-5 versus AQ leagues. The ACC is 4-9 versus AQ leagues.
I give the nod to the SEC based on performance and note what has been said many times. The SEC does not go out of conference much.
I did enjoy the Texas vs Ole Miss, Arkansas vs Rutgers games a lot.

5 of 14 isn't half. And none (outside of Bama-Michigan) have faced a quality opponent. SCAR and UGA's best wins are Missouri and LSU and MSU have beaten Auburn (LSU did it less convinsingly than Clemson did. The rest is a sprinkling of Sun Belt, C-USA, and FCS opponents.

and the fact I grew up a Clemson fan and until they fired Hatfield for not being red neck enough I was. I realize now there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes that I did not know about. (recruiting). This was before Gore invented the internet. I lived in Anderson and worked with bucoo Clemson fans, one of which got me addicted to this site. Family and friends who are on here. So no it is not so weird.

message board is. 1200 students who care more about micro biology and astronomy than sports. The Citadel not much better. VT's is a nightmare to navigate around, and although I spent four years in Arkansas and went to a satellite campus, it just isn't the same. A good friend of mine who is on here introduced me to this board and I was hooked. I do not flame nor pretend to be something I am not. Glad I can be of service.

wasn't quite so hard to get in. grandfather went to Clemson. Lake house on Hartwell, boated to the games, why is it so hard to accept? Lost interest when as I felt they did Hatfield wrong. It is not like I went to the darkside and became a Coot.

Went to a few games as a cadet. Partied with Clemson friends. Then went to Arkansas. Married into the epitome of coot redneck family. Got put of that. Yes some rare obnoxious Clemson fans tainted me. Now live in Virginia. Just like this board.

Depending on who loses from #10 through #4. Florida will almost certainly be ranked ahead of them and I don't see them landing above undefeated Notre Dame, UGA, SCAR, WVU, and Stanford if they lose.

LOL..only fans of the ACC would even attempt this argument. It is absurd.
Team strength aside, is it tougher to win on the road in the SEC than the ACC because of the environments? Shouldn't this be taken into account?

It is with the spread.
I will also argue a dead BC or Duke is just as difficult to play in as an LSU or Bama

Can you please explain what you mean by this? Surely, you can't think that Alumni Stadium and Wallace Wade are just as difficult to play in as Tiger Stadium and Bryant-Denny.

I mean what I said. There is something extremely difficult about taking top level D1 athletes to high school stadiums. There is no atmosphere and playing against these schools is not exactly what they signed up for.
When you travel to any of the major stadiums, you don't need any motivation or extra energy - the stadium provides it. Not so for BC, Duke, Wake, or even Vandy...

The major stadiums are also much louder and make it harder to audible and hear snap counts.
I see what you're saying, but I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Nothing wrong with that at all though.

They do each present their own set of hardships. Personally, I like our chances in Wallace Wade & Alumni Stadium this year much more than I would like our chances in Tiger Stadium or Bryant-Denny.
But I think we have shown we won't be intimidated by the surroundings.

It matters because SEC teams get credit for beating other SEC teams, when really beating the bottom of the SEC is no different than beating teams from the MAC or Sun Belt conferences.
Why should some teams get a bump beating lower tier teams while others get penalized. That's my main beef.

Credit for what? People here admit that the top tier in the SEC are the cream of the crop. So, I don't see the "credit" you refer to benefitting the others, even if your claim is valid.

The top is not the debate, but the bottom. For example, LSU is barely penalized, if any at all, for scraping by Auburn. But should FSU squeak by an ACC team of similar level, they will be crushed.

We will see if that happens to FSU, should they just "get by" an opponent. I think that the advantage, right now, that LSU has is that they have won 2 national championships in the past 10 years whereas FSU has been irrelevant during that period. So LSU will be given the benefit of the doubt whereas with FSU, they might say, "same ole FSU". Heck on this forum there were a lot of FSU doubters prior to your game with them.

Most people aren't debating the top of the SEC. It's the bottom that's the issue. Kind if like claiming you're the richest country in the world, only to have some of worst poverty.

There are certain problems you can see in those rankings just by eyeballing them. I'd say it will take at least two or three more weeks of data before we can really tell how much credibility the system has.

I see FSU going to the national title this year.
Sep 28, 2012, 11:14 AM
|
|
I can see them ending the season at #2 in the rankings. Unfortunately, because they arent an SEC team, they wont be allowed to go. Because, you know the SEC is God's kingdom on earth. Heres how it will end: 1. Alabama, because Saban is God's only begotten son 2. FSU (BCS officials: "what the F*** is the ACC?") 3. Alabama's 2nd string 4.LSU 5. Alabama's 3rd string 6. Florida
Alabama and LSU will play again in the National Title game, FSU will get shafted because they arent SEC and are therefore not allowed to be invited to the National Championship, and every SEC team will be given an honorary National Championship because no one can ever possibly do better than an SEC team.
Gotta keep it real here remember that people. Lol

Washington beating Stanford last night only helps FSU as it hurts Oregon's strength of schedule.
