A case for Brownell......

Feb 26, 2013, 12:01 PM

I've heard a lot on here about Brownell not being a good coach (although I know that's not the general consensus), and I wanted to share my opinion on the matter.

We all know brownell preaches defense, and nobody will argue that we have a bad defense. I don't think anyone has a major issue in that regard....but the offense on the other hand...

Brownell's offense runs on screens and cuts, a very methodical, slow offense. The system won't outscore you, but rather relies on getting open shots on the perimeter through good post play (at least that is how I feel about it). So, in order to do well, the players need to shoot well. I think we get plenty of good open looks that just aren't knocked down consistently.

In games we have won this season, our 3-point percentage is 40.3%, not a bad percentage at all, but in games we have lost, the percentage is 25.5%, and in a few of those games we've put up close to 20 attempts from beyond the arc.

So, my point being is, Brownell's system gets men open, but when they can't knock it down, we suffer the consequences, and at what point does blame shift from the coach to the players who can't consistently knock down the shot.

Same goes for free throws, on the year we are 65.6% from the line, placing us 280th out of 347 teams. This is no surprise for most, but how much of that can really be blamed on Brownell, it isn't like they don't practice them religiously, more players simply need to make them.

And lastly, a lot of grief has been given to Milton Jennings, almost deservingly so. In our wins, he is 53.9% from the field, in losses? Only 30.8%. Many of those shots are 3's, and many of his misses from the arc are with lots of time left on the shot clock, which can kill offensive momentum. I'm not sure if Brownell encourages this, but the fact that Milton has underachieved does not help.

So my point is that while Brownell is the coach, a lot of the blame has to go to the fact that our players simply are not making open shots (outside of roper!). Maybe this improves over time, maybe not, but you can't blame brownell for recruiting bad shooters (I'm sure they were pretty good in high school), and we need these guys to step up and hit more 3-balls to get us a few wins.

In reality though, do you expect him to pull any better?

Feb 26, 2013, 12:11 PM

I hear people say OP was a good recruiter, yet his only big class had 2 busts (Milton and Noel), with booker being the big contributer.

Through 2 years (I don't consider 2010 a class for Brownell), he has 2 4-stars and multiple 3-stars, all of whom I'm sure were good shooters in high school...

His recruiting is on the same level as OPs.

Do you realize how hard it is to recruit in this area? Brownell was in the mix for guys like Bryce Johnson and Jerami Grant, but it's hard to beat out programs for 4* and 5* like UNC and Syracuse with legitimate national title chances.

Give Brownell a chance to run a recruiting class through to graduation. I think by then, you'll see how his system of using his lineup of Senior 3* recruits vs. your Sophomore 5* recruits wins games.

I don't think he or any other coach we've had...........

Feb 26, 2013, 12:09 PM

has been a bad coach - our problem is poor recruiting.

You can got only so much out of a player's abilities. You have to have the talent to be successful so until we start recruiting better there's only so much the coach can do.

Sure, the coach can correct attitude and effort problems and focus on the basics but he can't teach real skills if a player just doesn't have it.

agreed...Dabo's strength is getting the kids to Clemson

Feb 26, 2013, 12:31 PM

and he's hired good assts.

Give him time.

Who else are going to get???

he's not going anywhere

Feb 26, 2013, 12:17 PM

the expectations for this program aren't high right now...simply looking for growth/improvement.

Clemson was

Feb 26, 2013, 12:24 PM

a respectable team when they had Stitt who could drive the lane and score consistently. He wasn't a big time recruit but he was coached up to be a quality guy. We have had a few good shooters develop in the last few years like Young and Rivers so there is always a good chance that someone will develop in the off season. A take charge player would help tremendously and I haven't seen one of those at Clemson in a long time.

agreed..the last take charge player I saw at CU was Buckner***

Unless he can sign Demetrius Henry . . .

Feb 26, 2013, 12:36 PM

and I don't think he will, or unless he's involved with some guys we don't know about yet, this upcoming recruiting class is going to be an absolute disaster.

Henry is not an option. I know we have a chance with Sidy Djite. WE need a big in this class. Ajukwa( team won the state in SCISSA) and Rooks will provide much needed scoring punch.

Feb 26, 2013, 12:44 PM [ in reply to Unless he can sign Demetrius Henry . . . ]

unfortunately, I could see it being an issue too....

My problem is that I feel we have plenty of guards, and really only need big men. Rooks and ajukwa are 6-3 and 6-5 respectively, with only one big center even considering us (Djitte, but why would he come to clemson with an offer from Uconn?) So we'll just have to wait and see I suppose

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UConn's recruiting is going to take a slide in the next few

Feb 26, 2013, 12:46 PM

yrs...they are essentially being kicked out of the Big East with Cuse, Louisville, Pitt, and ND leaving....THEN...the Catholic schools are leaving next year. What do they have to sell any longer???

Feb 26, 2013, 12:51 PM

Great tradition and arena, sell out crowds, close to large cities, pretty much everything we don't have....

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but the coach who won those titles is gone

Feb 26, 2013, 12:55 PM

they are now in essentially Conference USA...attendance is going to suffer when they are playing Tulane instead of Syracuse or Georgetown. They are going from traditional northeast basketball powers to schools like....Central Florida, Tulane, Houston, and SMU. Attendance is going to suffer big time.

What Clemson needs is ....................

Feb 26, 2013, 12:56 PM [ in reply to Won a title 2 years ago, multiple Big East titles, ]

a local Indian Tribe to open up a few Casinos with giant hotels and entertainment centers near the campus and bring in some big $$$$'s and nightlife. Probably isn't going to happen in my lifetime!!!

Nnoko & Smith would be lucky to start for a Southern conf. team.

Re: A case for Brownell......

My problem is he's repeating the same thing that isn't working, this goes against good coaching philosophy. If you aren't winning using one scheme then maybe you should try something different. Couldn't hurt, i'm just saying. Take Virginia's full court press for instance...they didn't press in our first match up and we stomped them...it's called adjustments, didn't we get on Tommy B for not adjusting. I'm just saying...
