If you dont invest in your program at a high level, its going to suffer. Thats essentially what happened to VT. We kind of saw that at Clemson in the 90's-00's as well. If you want to be elite, you have to invest in the program at an elite level. Thats what makes all this conference realignment stuff start to make sense. If you cant see that a program bringing in twice the money you do is a massive advantage, I dont know what to tell you.

A good read as it is always interesting to see what happened behind the curtain. VT is not a place which can win on autopilot. It's takes careful nurturing as there is not much talent in SW Virginia so the Tidewater area is key.

thorn in our side for 50 years it seems with some many close ones, great ones and heart-breaking losses.
Never forget that year we upset them in Blacksburg on National night TV (?2010) and in the replay game at ACCCG in Charlotte their fans were focused & ready for a beat-down of Tigers but their tall QB couldn’t have played worse due to our highly ranked D..and their super fans left the stadium shell-shocked to say the least.
Always liked playing them since beautiful area & campus, rowdy fans, love their football, rocking stadium, great history of having a work-bucket & underdog type mentality and having blocked most punts in college history under Beamer.

It was 2011. The defense was not "highly ranked" that year. The next game was the infamous 70 point Orange Bowl against West Virginia.

Nice read. When Fuente was hired, I thought VT had hit a home run. Nice to see what at least some of the issues were.

They could have made it a 2 word essay, rather than 30 pages and just said, "Justin Fuente". When Brent Pry began recruiting in the Richmond/Tidewater area many of the coaches said they hadn't seen a VT coach in 4 years. That is exactly what happened. He stopped recruiting Virginia and as a result Tennessee, Clemson, UNC, and Penn State have come into the Commonwealth and gotten a lot of the top talent. In fact, this Friday night I am going to watch a junior RB from Lynchburg who has already committed to Clemson. He didn't even give VT a sniff.
It will be a couple of years, but we should be a solid 8-4 program every year.
