If you ever played sports then you know watching from the sidelines for a bit helps you refocus. No one is questioning what Shipley means and brings, but he needed a ‘reset’ and he getting it done so far.

That ball in Miami got kicked out. That was some super bad luck. Anybody would have lost the ball there. Besides your other choice is Mafah who fumbled twice at Duke and in the last 2 min against ND and had a backbreaking fumble against SC last year that probably cost us that game. We have no Back without sin.

Starter linemen who were acting like turnstiles, right?
Take a breath and watch Phil run behind those same guys in the 2nd. In the first half, when both were running behind the starters, Phil was the more effective.

Even know. Believe me, I don’t think about you. You can start by pointing out any factual inaccuracies in any post in this thread of mine that you TD’d without comment, because they got you so emotionally worked up. Do you think I was wrong anywhere there or was it just a contempt TD?

I don’t consider hitting the TD button an emotional act. And it’s certainly not passive aggressive now that my username is clearly visibly when I do it. When I say “contempt” I mean for the comments I reply to negatively. A significant portion of the negative posters on here just have emotional control issues and can’t seem to control themselves in game. Many offer apologies and promise reflection after the fact then go right back down the rabbit hole the very next game. Best wishes.

I don’t agree. I’m actually quite reassured after these exchanges with Obed®that two people in TNet can express their differing opinions strongly and perhaps unnecessarily make it personal but reign it in and have a reasonable exchange.

Your point was a strawman

No one is saying he was the “problem”. Knowledgable people are saying that Mafah is the better pure RB for tough yards, and that using them interchangeably the way we were is not maximizing either of them. They both have strengths and weaknesses, and simply using them identically with a 3:1 ship to phil carry ratio is just not good personnel management.

I’m not going to pretend to have read all your posts but that is certainly the most artfully I’ve read you make the complaint. Which also neglects that early in the season your preferred back was the significantly worse in pass coverage and whiffed in some crucial circumstances. They both had significant liabilities early this season but one made a much easier read for the defense. They both seem to be shaking off whatever was wrong at this point in the season.

Mafah has had better PFF grades in every game and
1

The gap has widened as the season has gone on. That includes pass protection (I’m assuming you didn’t mean coverage). You guys can harp on that one single play all you want and maybe it was a whiff or maybe it was QB and RB on separate pages, but either way, it’s a single play.
People have literally gotten viscerally angry when it was suggested that Mafaah might be the better feature back with Ship still getting plenty of touches that catered to his strengths, but no one would ever say why other than because before this season Ship was better than Mafah (I don’t really disagree with that either, but it’s not how current season football talent evaluations and decisions are performed).
So all I’ve asked is that with almost all meaningful metrics, and PFF grades (which are as nitty-gritty and thorough as it gets) on my side, explain where I’m wrong. No one has really offered anything but “contempt” in response.

I put very little into PFF stats, how do they grade a play without knowing how that play is coached?
I don't think people are arguing that Mafah deserves more touches but there are far too many people acting like Shipley is an FCS level rb which is just dumb.

I don’t disagree with a much here. I’ve mostly seen you employ snark about the topic. Perhaps you’ve explained yourself to a point of exhaustion and just I’ve just seen you being snarky. I can certainly relate when it comes to try to dissect our basketball situation. I do think Mafah missed some assignments other than the big one. I certainly would have agreed at any point that he is the better between the tackles back and have shared frustration watching Shipley used in that role repeatedly. But, at every level of football, I watch coaches (including the very best) do things that I view as counter intuitive. They have their reasons.

Nah brother there was a slew of people on here and X saying Shipley need to go. That's ludicrous the kid has straight up win games for Clemson. The same argument youre making for Mafah can be made for Shipley this year. Shipley was ultra effective last year and his freshman year and the big change was losing parks and McFadden as well as a blocking philosophy change. Idk why yall can't just say we have 2 stud rbs and leave it at that.

Have zero stud backs, and two or three above average backs that can still give great production. The beauty is that they have different skill sets, which so far this season we have basically ignored and not used to our advantage.

I think they are studs but I will admit there is no break away speed we were spoiled with Etienne. Gillman wasn't a burner but he won alot of games at Clemson and took over several.

Studs is subjective. If we define stud as a potential NFL draft pick, Mafah and Shiple, and likely our top 4 backs aren't likely to be drafted. Haynes again is TBD.

The problem is that when your forte is getting the tough yards inside, and your line can't block for crap, that negates your strength, hence the aforementioned ratio.

I don’t get it. We have a great 1-2 punch at RB. Shipley has explosiveness in open field and is the better receiver. Mahfa has vision and patience and power. Why does any Clemson fan not see this is a great “problem” to have? I don’t get it. Both have had ups and downs all season.

I never said Ship was the problem before last week or this week, but I did say if Ship started stutter stepping and running up backs of OL, then I wanted to see more Mafah. Ship had a chip today, I think he knew he was being questioned or challenged by many. Happy he looked good today, probably hardest running all year actually.

Ship needs to keep his head up on the between the tackles runs. He is quick to lower his head and try to bull through the hole which often results into just running into his own guard or tackle. The kid does a ton of things well but Mafah keeps his head up and often finds cutback lanes on those same plays.
