2024 recruiting class

19

Sep 12, 2023, 11:04 AM

The class is almost finished. It looks like the coaches only want to add one more OL, DE, and LB. They have locked in on their remaining targets.

OL: Daniel Akinkunmi
DE: Solomon Williams
LB: Bradley Shaw

If we don't sign these 3, what do we do? History says we will offer developmental guys that almost certainly won't be able to help us in 2024.

That's probably fine at offensive line because we are only losing Putnam. Linthicum will be in year 4, so presumably he will be ready to go. We also signed a great class last year. No need to go into the portal for this group. Got it.

But DE and LB make sense. We are definitely losing XT and Mascoll at DE, with Parker showing the ability to take over for them next year. I don't know about Denhoff. Will Ojiegbe and Hoffler be ready? Zaire Patterson and Jaheim Lawson just seem like career backups? Why not bring in a guy from the portal to start alongside Parker? Force Denhoff, Ojiegbe, and Hoffler to compete with a proven commodity. Same thing for LB. We are losing Carter and Trotter Jr. Woodaz definitely starts. I like Anderson and Crayton. Sammy Brown looks like a future phenom. But why not bring in another proven commodity to start alongside Woodaz? Force the younger guys to compete with an older guy. Why sign developmental guys that will not help us at all?

I don't know. Just my thoughts.

I am talking about bringing in 2 players from the portal to allow younger guys another year to develop.

Somehow people will misrepresent this and make it sound like that I want Dabo to flip the entire roster like Deion Sanders did.

What happens if you bring in a 2 players from the portal and 2 younger players leave? I don’t know if it would happen that way, just wondering your thoughts?

You play the more talented players from the portal and then recruit and/or use the portal to get some more? You know, what all the elite teams are doing?

Hmm, that sorta makes your OP a bit of a troll or

1

Sep 12, 2023, 8:45 PM

at the very least, loaded.

Daniel is a development guy as it is. He's not going to be a plug and play guy. Maybe year three but a def year one redshirt so 2024 was never going to be a contributing year. The other two, idk. I tend to agree we have an issue at DE and provably LB unless one of the young guys ends up like Woodaz, contributing year one, no redshirt.

As of now... The LB room next year will be...

JR: Wade Woodaz
SO: Kobe McCloud, Dee Crayton, Jamal Anderson
FR: Sammy Brown, Drew Woodaz

The coaches are looking to sign one more, which would bring the number to 7. Dabo said that their number for LB is 8. So something has to give.

McCloud was a late offer in the 2022 class and a low level 3 star recruit that I feel will be a depth guy for us his entire career. I really liked Anderson out of high school and Wes has said positive things about Crayton. Sammy Brown is obviously a future phenom. Maybe Drew can be ready to go like Wade was. It's looking like the coaches are likely to sign a developmental project late in this cycle as well.

Anderson, Crayton, Sammy, and Drew will all be competing for 1st and 2nd string snaps next year. That's barely any experience. Bringing in a veteran that has one year of eligibility left makes a lot of sense at LB. Drew can redshirt. Anderson, Crayton, and Sammy can still compete for snaps while also having the potential for another year to develop.

Thanks. Blake needs to sit this week. Saying this because we need to see if someone else can step up. If not, and Daniel doesn't commit, I think we need to bring in an oline portal there too. Got to account for injuries.

May be looking at a portal wr too. If Randall doesn't step up soon, his pt will be cut down... and that might be enough for him to enter the portal.

Either way, I would start looking now. Project players at any of those positions would be 2 or 3 years out.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Randall transfers.

1

Sep 12, 2023, 8:48 PM

If we stick Sellato out there or one of the younger guys like Noble, I think he's going to get passed. I was really hoping Noble would come in ready though it sounds like they want to redshirt him.

The portal guys have to want to come to Clemson

1

Sep 12, 2023, 3:33 PM

as well as Clemson want them. The positions you mention are probably the most difficult to find a quality player available, and the few that are, in my opinion are looking for NIL money or cultural misfit for Clemson. Just my thoughts and not based on a serious analysis of the players that are in the portal. Why would a quality player want to leave a school when he is starting? Money or a personality conflict with a coach are the most likely reasons. Graduate players are another matter and proposition.

If I am correct (a big IF) on the quality of portal player available, what is the advantage of taking a 2nd/3rd team guy versus taking the same misplays/mistakes with a RS freshman or sophomore that will then have 2-3 more years to play for you.

Leon, the class looks solid, but it seems like we are skating on thin ice to be honest.

Don’t mean to bring up the negative, but I personally see players decomitting if for some reason these downfall games like ND, Tennessee, SCAR, and Duke keep happening.

Love the class, but I don’t want to start predicting anything for them Clemson wise. Because of what I’ve said.

Agree with your points

1

Sep 12, 2023, 6:03 PM

I thought David Hood summed it up on the podcast well and +1s your point about the portal and late offers.

IMO I think the smarter thing would be to take any leftover scholarships and save them for portal targets instead of late offers.

Since the transfer portal is in December, I think early signing period is too? Any spots not filled then, unless we're holding out for a must-have, should get a hard look at the portal.

Same thing come the end of spring ball, any open spots should be prioritized by the portal (though, if we're being frank, I'd prefer the portal only be open once a year if it's basically free agency).

the problem with that is most of the portal guys are in the portal for one reason......money! The remainder are in there for immediate playing time. They dont want to hear they will have to compete. they want to hear they have a starting position wrapped up before they set foot on campus.

Re: 2024 recruiting class

There are quite a few that aren’t at major programs that simply developed late. Even a few years ago, we offered the center from UVA that went to Mich instead of us. Thus, we did offer a portal player and he said “no”. There a few others iirc (forgot details). This idea that we haven’t pursued portal players is factually incorrect and the number we’ve offered mirrors the pattern of HS offers, very few. That said, I definitely think we should hold 1-2 schollys each year specifically for the portal and pursue rising seniors that are plug and play but not long term so we don’t kill our retention.

I would agree that Clemson won't he appealing to many players seeking guaranteed money. However, there will be veterans that are simply looking to play for a major P5 program as they gear up for the NFL draft. Clemson can offer them that opportunity.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not all HS players peak before their junior year.

Sep 12, 2023, 8:19 PM

There are always some late bloomers - players that grew - players that now “get it”, etc.
Some players are simply overlooked. If they perform, Dabo might offer.

Re: Which DE in the portal should we get?***

The portal opens isn't open yet so I'm confused by this question. I'm talking about using the portal for next year. This is assuming Clemson misses on their final target. Instead of offering a developmental guy late in the cycle (lets say in November-December) that won't be ready to contribute in 2024, offer a veteran in the portal instead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2024 recruiting class

Sep 13, 2023, 8:04 AM

The Clemson vs the Portal problem is straight forward.

The top tier guys are trying to capitalize on their success. They are either looking for NIL money, guaranteed playing time at a prominent program or both. It's been an open book that Clemson doesn't stack up against other destinations in those areas. Dabo doesn't guarantee PT. The NIL collective doesn't have pockets deep enough to compete with the ones that do FSU, UGA, LSU, Texas etc.

That leaves the 2nd tier and below. Are those guys enough help? If so, you gotta think the roster is in worse shape than even the most critical fan thinks.

Clemson has a niche recruiting window. It hit BIG and had more appeal when Brett Vegetables was here. (My dad had Parkinson's and just couldn't get his mouth and mind around Brent Venables. So Brett Vegetables stuck in our house.) Without BV's reputation and the niche recruit success the Tigers have had in the past, it is going to be difficult to get back on top of the mountain. Difficult. Not impossible.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2024 recruiting class

Sep 13, 2023, 9:48 AM

Clemson offers great opportunities for NIL. We have an entire facility dedicated to NIL. And it's ran by CitiGroup's former CEO. This notion that we can't get the guys seeking NIL deals is incorrect.
