1 portal offer so far

2

Dec 6, 2023, 8:36 AM

I am not trying to tick off that certain crowd on here, this is a serious thought/question. With the losses to the portal, graduation, and NFL, we face losing 10 of 11 starters on defense in 24’. I know we have some very talented freshman playing now, but that’s a lot of quality experience to replace. I’m concerned about depth and numbers.

My question is do you think Dabo and company are equipped and willing to do what it takes to make the roster as great as it can possibly be? He hasn’t used the portal in a meaningful way yet, but he will absolutely have to now. Not doing so will be like putting yourself on probation.

There has been one offer to an OL so far this portal cycle. Why hasn’t there been any others? I read the guy say, well we are busy with the guys we have now. Isn’t everyone doing that?

The staff doesn’t have the experience that a portal abuser like FSU has. Can Dabo bring in the players he needs? I’m worried. But I support Dabo with whatever he does. He’s earned that trust.

We don’t know who else, if any are heading out too. Clemson has been lucky compared to a lot of programs so far. There’s only been what, 8? That’s not bad.

Maybe Dabo's approach is akin to

A candidate job search. It starts with, would you like to interview? If the answer's no, then no point in offering.

Clemson doesn't offer make many scholarship offers to high school players, so a proportionate approach to the portal would likely mirror.

Not unlike staff changes, Dabo also doesn't discuss business in public. He uses doors, professionalism, ethics and maintains the privacy/dignity of those he discusses their future with. Traits a good executive would practice.

out (or work through) how to pay the players we currently have w/ NIL money. Just like the CFP decision everything is based on the almighty $$$. Wonder if a few found out they were not going to get what they thought they should and decided to look elsewhere.

College Football is in complete disarray and no one wants or knows how to fix it. Hopefully, a 12 team playoff will help but it won't do anything to settle the NIL transfer issues. Some are comparing it to the NFL, but at least the NFL has something in place and is not the wild, wild, west.

Dabo does not have the luxury of a huge war chest to pull from, Neff spoke on it a week or so ago.

Unless those who like to grumble about us not using the Portal can come up with

another 400,000 or so more Clemson Alumni, the disadvantage we are at with numbers ($$$) concerning the Portal will remain real. It just is. We don't have that Phil Knight bottomless pocket superbooster, or Oil Baron collective like several of the other big football schools have either. We have ~169,000 living Alumni, vs ~600,000 for say, Ohio State. And, I would also wager that more of their Alumni are bigger wage earners than ours. These are pesky FACTS. We want to play at the Yacht Club with the Big Boys, but our yacht would be considered a dinghy by many of them.

Clemson has done a SUPERB job of competing thus far with these limitations in place. But, NIL is becoming more and more prevalent, with the predictable uptick in kids jumping in the Transfer Portal to try and reap as much of the bonanza as they can. There is also the ever increasing earning discrepancy from conference money. That part of our future does NOT look bright. I guess, when it comes to that, you can call me Eeyore, 'cause "We're Dooomed."

:(

That asked and answered the same question. But I'm feeling lazy today.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

The OP believes if something is not being made public then it did not occur. Given the current environment and the fact that our NIL budget seems to be way smaller than other elite schools, keeping the offers as off the radar as possible would seem like the smart move.

Which of the talented Freshmen DBs, DL, and ... is going to transfer out because $1 million was taken away from NIL for current players to go pay NIL to an outsider?

Let the current players get paid and see what can be used on a transfer player.

We have around 83-84 on scholarship and are heavily involved with at least two high school recruits. Dabo isn't going to offer a scholarship if he isn't prepared to accept their commitment.

I just saw that. The perception that the roster is being decimated is wrong and the portal needs to be used is incorrect apparently. I was surprised to see the scholarship breakdown.

If we are having to negotiate with current players, between that and incoming recruits, not sure how you will know exactly what you are going to be working with numbers wise. The man said he would use the portal when needed and he has never given any reason to doubt him on this.
