How much stock to put in 247 Sports recruting rankings?

It seems like we got off to a hot start and then everything came to a screeching halt. We've fallen to #10 on the list. FSU is nipping at our heels and Miami is ranked ahead of us now. How much stock do we put into these rankings? Are they just a mirage?
I found this statement about Recruiting rankings and subsquent team performances.
Recruiting rankings are a good predictor of success, especially over the long term. Multiple studies (including from 247Sports, ESPN, and academic researchers) have found that:
Teams that consistently sign top-10 recruiting classes tend to win more games, appear in major bowls, and make the College Football Playoff (CFP).
Around 70–80% of national champions since 2000 have had multiple top-5 recruiting classes in the four years prior.

I put a lot of stock in their rankings.

They do a good job, and base their rankings on a ton of data and analysis.
No recruiting rankings will be perfect, but I consider theirs the best.
As long as we keep hiring elite coaches and are aggressive in including financial incentives in our recruiting pitches, we will be fine.

Would you have the same answer if our class was reflected in the top 5?

Not as much as they used to. With all the transferring

the accumulation of high rankings over a multi year period is basically meaningless. Those teams with high churn rates just sign 40 guys each year, elevate their rankings, and the majority transfer within a year or 2 and the there is another 40 person class. No ranking this day and age should be based on accumulation of points. If you are going to do one, it should be ranked by player avg. for a recruiting class and more importantly just current total roster ranking at the start of the season.

I could care less about the ratings of a recruit or where Clemson ranks on the list. What's more important is how these young men are coached once they get here and as we have seen in the past Dabo has never needed a top class to win big.

this is so false and idiotic. When Dabo has won big, he had had the best QBs in the nation, like lawrence and watson, and 5 star recievers like higgins, ross, mike willams, etc. on the defensive side, he was loaded woth 5 star studs like Dexter Lawrence, Wilkins, Tre lamar, etc. Never has he won big without superior talent. The last couple years other ACC schools and USUCK has caught us on the recruiting trail and the results speak for themselves.

They are very relevant. If you aren't one of the top 10 most talented teams you basically have zero shot at winning a title. Of course the rankings for any individual player can be off, but as a whole, they do have a great deal of predictive value with regards to who will be good over the next few years especially if you stack good classes.

I believe Clemson's average recruiting ranking was around 12th on 247 between 2013-2016, Dabo was still able to make back to back National Championship appearances. It helps to have top classes but it really depends on how well they are coached, Texas A&M is a good example of a team with great recruiting classes with almost nothing to show for it.

247 has their own ratings and also has a composite rating, which is a combination of multiple ratings from other recruiting services. That composite rating decreases bias from any single rating system and is often the main one used in articles and publications.

I think Dabo has had maybe 2 top 5 classes. Usually were in the 8-13 range. It's easy to sign top 5 classes for some like Goergia, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU and other bc they going to sign 30 players every cycle. Dabo is going to sign the number Clemson needs each year. Those other schools push guys out Dabo does not so while yes recruiting rankings matter as far as talent acquisition the main number that matters is hit rate. How many of those guys in that class actually turn out. Clemson has been good at evaluating. I think you can see when Clemson missed on some guys they took a dip and why it may take a Clemson a year or 2 longer than most to transition out of those misses is because they believe in development but sometimes developing doesn't work ie; DJU. Other times it take a couple years ie; Cade. So while it matters about recruiting rankings it goes a little deeper than the surface.

2013-15th 2014-16th 2015-9th Playoff Runnerup 2016-11th NC 2017-16th Playoff 2018-7th NC 2019-10th Playoff Runnerup 2020-3rd-Playoff 2021-5th 2022-10th 2023-11th 2024-11th 2025-26th
Seems our recruiting peaked after we won 2 NC, not before, and on field results dropped off after getting top 5 classes.
We had some tough luck with some of the guys in those 2020 and 2021 classes, and some that just didn't pan out as before, which will happen.
But take-away seems to be that classes ranked ~10th or so with good coaching and development are generally enough to succeed at the highest level.

Our 2020 class being the highest ranked yet biggest bust % is pretty telling and probably what led to a back slide

There is a well known direct correlation between the ratio of blue chip players and national championship contenders.
Clemson has done more with less over some years but that's not an absolute
When that has been the case , we have had a generational QB under center. DW and TL
Had we not missed on Perry - Wright and both RBs we were after , we would be solidly in the top 10.

I would say they are pretty good at their analysis and most of the teams in the recruiting top 10 are the teams in current polls(AP, CFP, USA today, Coaches) top 10 and most of the teams in the recruiting Top 11 through 20 are usually the teams that finished ranked there in the polls. When it comes to ranking players, you have 32 players ranked 5 star and about 400 players with a 4 star rating. Then after that it looks like about 1,000 to 1,200 players with 3 star rating. Then those players are broke down based on positional rankings and state rankings. And I think if you take a look at On3, ESPN , 247 , Rivals and others(SuperPrep, Max) it is a system that works... When it comes to overall rankings it can be a little subjective ....like trying to say a team ranked #6 in recruiting is a lot better than team ranked #10 recruiting or team ranked #15 is a lot better than #20 is subjective ... I think the 5 star players are picked and tend to find their way into the NFL (a few exceptions) , the 4 star player makes their mark on the NFL ... But the way I look at recruits and how I look at it, is I separate the top 32 5 star and 4 star into the top 400 players as the best in the country and where they finish is based on statistics and then I'm somewhat subjective to who was recruiting them and the amount of offers each received from the top programs in the country. Clemson does well most of the time, last year 2025 they lost 7 top 300 recruits or decommits which was unusual.. but this year Clemson has like 14 players in the top 400 , so regardless of #8 recruiting class or #15 recruiting class, it's a really good group of recruits ....

I just look at all of them and mainly look at the player rankings that are more consistent as a whole. Like...you know when you got a stud player coming in as oppose to a good player with potential.
