MickeyP agreed with write-in fan that DaBO should be 1st FB HC with Statue. I don’t!

I respectfully say no to his having “1st” statue to honor head coaches of football.
For me it would go:
John Heisman Frank Howard Danny Ford
Then, DaBO.
How’d you feel about statue ranking?

Agree with Frank, Danny and Dabo, but Clemson was just a stepping stone for Heisman. Heisman was only at Clemson for 2 or 3 years and did not really accomplish anything while here.

Tiger68! Heisman did do a lot at & for Clemson!

Was “1st real & full-time” HC (4 yrs from 1900-1903), had 1st Undefeated Teams, Forged the tough Clemson mentality which caused us to be feared in Southern football circles, invented several football formations while here as well as terminology used today.
Plus, Heisman whipped Alabama one year & know that was a huuge victory, even then.
Now consider this, Notre Dame has lots of statues near or around their stadium, from Moses with his index finger pointed towards the sky (#1) to Knute Rockne.

LBB, I am just having a hard time remembering that far back, although it seems like only yesterday.
Having had Heisman as a coach, does give Clemson some bragging rights and something to be proud of, but I wish he had stayed more than a couple of years.

his NC trophy count is only equal to Danny. Frank Howard has the field named after him, John Heisman's name is on the most prized individual award in the game...
Dabo probably will exceed Howard and Ford in accomplishments but I doubt if he gets a national award named after him... love Dabo, but... this is a non-starter...

that's strictly an opinion based on
May 11, 2018, 2:07 PM
|
|
perceived value of their accomplishments:
Danny: 1 NC, 6 ACC Championships, there was no CFB playoff but is 6-2 in bowl games and had a 19-0 stretch in ACC play Dabo: 1 NC; 4 ACC Championships, 3 CFB playoff appearances, 7-5 overall in bowl games because CFB playoff games are bowl games, but if you look at the CFB playoff as one win or lose bowl game, Dabo would be 5-4 in bowl games with a 1-2 record in playoff games
since the Ford era isn't apples to apples to the Swinney era, right now, it's only perceived value of their accomplishments. Dabo will exceed Ford if he remains the coach, but right now they are equal with neither holding an advantage in accomplishments.
...and I still say he doesn't deserve a statue... yet...

here is my point explained in detail

Ford only played a one and done bowl season, therefore his record is 6-2. Dabo has played in the CFB playoff 3 times winning only one CFB championship in 3 tries, 1-2. Count the playoff as just one game, to get a win, you have to win two games, any loss in 1 of 2 games is a loss... and this is only to somewhat equal the playing field because Ford never had a playoff to participate in. if Ford had a playoff to participate in, then we can just count all postseason wins and losses but he didn't so my point was for "equal" comparisons only...

He is far too humble to let him build a statue of him. Not until after he retires at least.

I am also a big Danny fan.
But Dabo has three straight national play-off appearances, two straight title game appearances, one national title and this year looking like another similar run. There is no coach that has even approached that level of sustained success.
Moreover, you put Dabo behind Heisman. Heisman is not famous for what he did at Clemson. Though what he did here was impressive. It is too short lived and too short in titles to put him ahead of Dabo.
You put Dabo behind Howard. Dabo won a national title. Howard did not. Nothing against Frank Howard who is a legitimate Clemson legend and built Clemson into a program to be reckoned with, but a national title clearly trumps his accomplishments.

I think Dabo would not want a statue. He is a humble Christian man. He has put together best program and best team of coaches, best facilities, best player talent no doubt. He is turning boys into great men in the process. I believe a statue sends wrong message. Just my opinion.

What does being a Christian man have to do with a statue? When I see a statue of someone, I certainly don't think to myself "wow what a non-humble God hater that guy must have been."

After 12-0 in 1981, Danny went 9-1-1 and 9-1-1. Even under probation.

That's three years with only two losses total. Dabo's never even *had* an undefeated season at Clemson.
So yeah, I think there is another coach that has "even approached" Dabo's level of sustained success.

Who, if anyone, gets the first statue is a secondary consideration. Here is what counts ... Dabo Swinney (considering ALL aspects of the job)is the best HC this University has ever had ... PERIOD!! There is really no legitimate room for discussion. Any person who's path intersects with Dabo's in any capacity, whether or not that person knows a football from a pumpkin, is going to be impacted by him in a very positive manner. THAT IS WHO HE IS.

Why copy other schools - just be Clemson. If we did statues we would already have 3 or 4 erected of very deserving coaches or players. This is a millennial fad to measure each other’s ####s.

So the owner tells the contractor.." i want a Halo Statue in every room."... So he comes back later and there is a telephone in every room..." Where are my Halo Statues? " And the old contractor says " right over here....This ting you pick up and go "Haooo, stat you?"....(Groan)...

Agree completely with the OP. Or, I don't mind if we go nuts and have all four statues commissioned at the same time....Although I'd install the Dabo statue only after we close the book on his time at Clemson.

I don't think the book will ever be closed on Frank Howard, Danny Ford or Dabo Swinney. They have all been unbelievably helpful to the Clemson story.
