Clemson lost because of poor tackling against the run. I cannot believe I'm even saying that right now. The front four was getting pressure, but not enough to rattle Shough. The front four also struggled against the infamous cut block technique. Something that Paul Johnson used to do at GT, and I despised playing GT on account of it. If a team scores 21 points on your defense, then it is time to evaluate your team's training and physicality. If you have a traditional Clemson defense, then the offense can afford to have a few errors or busted plays. Since Brent Venables departed, I have noticed a few factors that have been absent.
1. A physical and disruptive front four.
2. A pass rush where the DE is able to set the edge and rattle the QB all night.
3. Hungry line backers that get penetration due to the front four's efforts and gain tackles in the back field for a loss.
4. A back four that can tackle well in open space. Granted they provide decent pass coverage, but where is the physicality of the back four? The safeties and corners miss tackles all day and it's as if they do it out of fear.
5. A defense that focuses on the ball and hawks it down immediately and then proceeds to gang tackle the opponent.
6. Depth, where is the depth?
We need that punishing defense back that would make opposing RBs and QBs a nonfactor in the game. I can recall a time not long ago when the Clemson defense would strike fear into opposing teams because they were known to hit so hard that they injured players. QBs would take themselves out of the game, RBs would limp over to the side lines, and WRs/TEs would get the wind knocked out of them. WHERE IS THAT CLEMSON DEFENSE AT!
The offense came out flat, but finally started firing on all cylinders. However, if Clemson had a traditional defense, then it would have made all the difference in that game. What Clemson is lacking is intensity, a sense of urgency, and violence at the point of attack. We need nasty, mean, and scary defenders on the team. L'ville made our defense look like boy scout cadets.

If the big picture was to take a top ten defense and make it decline year to year then it’s working. BV was never outside the top 10. Goodwin hasn’t sniffed the top 10. 32 last year. Looking like triple digits final total defense rank this year as we sit at 68 right now!

Playing a 4-2-5 defense with only 6 in the box, poor tackling from the CBs and safeties that play back and are usually late in support of the run makers it hard to defend the run. We need to run a 4-3-4 defense which will help the linebackers to be effective. I believe that the 4-2-5 should only be used on obvious passing downs like 3rd and long.

This! I think playing only 2 LBs hurts vs the run

Both Carter and Woodaz are better used as outside LB and we need a real middle LB. The loss of Trotter really shows. We need Sammy Brown to be that middle LB. - not sure if he’s ready for that though

And obviously, you still can’t.
The big picture is this. Clemson will begin revenue sharing next season for scholarship players. Of which there will be 105 on the roster. However, Clemson will have the option to keep less than 105 active scholarships and afford more revenue sharing to the recruits that are committed to Clemson. As a boost to the players who return, NIL packages will be provided to ensure retention of quality talent on the team. So, no need for portal in my opinion. Clemson has one of the Top 3 NIL programs in the nation, and Dabo will probably only recruit a roster of 66-75 players. Each team will be capped on how much they're allotted for revenue sharing, but it will not dictate how much a player can receive on an individual basis. This will make Clemson more competitive for top talent in high schools.
Clemson is the No.17 college for revenues in the nation. Add in IPTAY which is not counted towards the revenue generated and you have a recipe for a successful big picture.
A Roster would look something like this:
On Offense:
(3) QBs (3) RBs (3) TEs (12) WRs (15) O-Linemen
On Defense:
(6) DTs (6) DEs (12) LBs (6) Safeties (6) Corners
Special Teams
(1) Punter (2) Place Kickers
With the recruitment of quality players, Clemson can now have a roster that is 3 deep at every position. Not just any player, but 5* quality players that can make an impact when the lights are on.
Of course, this would lean out the roster quite a bit with only (75) men on the roster. However, it's about quality not quantity. To further my point on what I believe Dabo's philosophy will morph into is that the schools were granted the permission to increase the staff size. This means that with an overall smaller team roster, you can give more focus on developing the roster to have quality talent on the field.
When training and developing positions, the staff can now split the smaller roster up into Team 1, Team 2, and Team 3. Whenever conducting installs, you have situational scenarios just as you would with each respective team.
During game day, all you have to do is simply call out Team 1 and that unit goes on the field. You can mass substitute entire units that have built cohesion and developed quality skillsets.
That's the ideal big picture.

Which is why I secretly hope Coach Venables gets fired from Oklahoma and returns to Clemson to unleash the hellhounds.

We have to play perfect football. We didn’t.
We need depth. We need stars. Something the 2016 & 2019 teams had.
The 25 year old qb lectured our defense.
Other teams are outbidding usin the offensive side.

Our offense goes 3-and-out in about 20 seconds and the defense gets gassed after being on the field for 4 straight series and you blame the defense....
