You agree with Penn State firing a coach that reached the semifinal last year?

I’m editing this because I’ve just checked TNET at 6:00 pm today, Monday, and see that 5 players ALREADY have decomitted from Penn State.
How stupid is their AD?? Wow
***Original Post below
It’s not registering for me. I don’t even know much about why so I’m curious
I could go through loads of coaches who went far and then had a tough start to the next year.

I don't agree with it and was shocked by it. There are reasons though. He had a horrible record against top 25 teams, the higher the ranking the worse his record was. Against top 5 teams he was 2-15 (or something of that nature). Add to that 3 straight bad losses this year and their patience ran out.

Penn State, unlike Clemson, will not hang on to a coach who is in decline. Franklin was not advancing against the better teams. You don't win natties having a losing record against the top teams. PSU is not content to win 9-10 games a season. They want the natties.

The Bear had some 6 & 4 seasons and turned it around with his version of the wishbone(adding an effective passing game). All coaches have(if employed long enough) experienced off years. Penn St. can do whatever but must accept the consequences. Dabo is not perfect but he is pretty darn good and will get us back on top. Just you wait and see.

I didn't think they'd do it in the middle of the year. That felt like the wrong move but they also lost Drew Allar for the season, so they're probably dead meat regardless. Idk, it's such a tricky dilemma because he did get them to a lot of double digit win seasons consecutively but he just never got them over the mountain of winning the big games against the Ohio State's, Oregon's, Michigan's when it mattered a lot of years. Losing back to back games to the conferences worst teams in UCLA and Northwestern this year didn't help his cause considering this was supposed to be THE YEAR for them.
I just don't know who they think they will get to replicate that kind of success. Cignetti maybe but he is rolling at Indiana right now and I'm unsure if he will leave there yet. I think them getting to the playoffs last year may have been their downfall. Penn State might see themselves as some sort of CFB juggernaut when that's not entirely the case.
Personally, I think when the dust settles, Penn State may have made a big mistake firing James Franklin. We shall see though. I do feel for their players and Franklin himself. They loved him, he loved PSU and he did pour a lot of effort into getting them back on track of being nationally relevant again. But he's getting a big pay check now, so that helps dull the pain.

He never won the big games!
He was a DEI hire, good guy, but eventually they got tired of dropping down the Big 10 ladder year after year.
He will land on his feet where they don’t have a tradition of winning. Possibly UNC or Va. Tech, Kentucky…..
The stupidity of firing Franklin is who do the get that is better?

UNC or Virginia Tech may honestly be good places for him. They'd kill to have the success Penn State had and probably would never fire him. He'd have time to get them built up and with 1/3rd of the ACC kinda just uncompetitive, it'd help. Kentucky? Not so sure about that one. Hard place to bring a lot of good talent, not much football history, and on top of having an unforgiving schedule a lot of years would probably have him gone in 4-5 years if he didn't get Kentucky in the 8+ win category.

Don’t feel too bad for him. He’s leaving with $50 million dollars.
If it was me I would be like Coach O….. what time you want me to leave and what door do I go out.

Ain't sheddin' no tears over anyone getting paid 50 million dollars to not work for it. He's got generational wealth.

This was a knee jerk reaction brought on by pressure from a large, loud alumni base. They should have gotten through the season and been better prepared with a good replacement waiting in the wings to try and salvage their recruiting.
Now, they have a complete mess on their hands and no easy fixes, and will be challenged to find someone better.

There are a number of things going on at the same time with Franklin: 1) he never wins the Big Gane. 2) he only won the Big 10 once- nine years ago 3) he was preseason 2 and lost three in a row, two to bad teams 4) QB was hurt and out for the season, ie: a belief that things were not going to get better the rest of the season. Last and maybe the most important given the above, he is not a likeable guy. Folks like Franklin and Brian Kelly don’t get the benefit of the doubt because people don’t like them and as soon as it starts going south no one feels bad for then or makes allowances for them. The other thing to remember about Penn State is that when Franklin took the job it was still a toxic place that most coaches would not go to. O’brien was there for a year or two before he bolted and Franklin got the job. Enough time has passed from the Sandusky/Paterno stink that Penn State is an attractive place for college coaches

Regarding your last sentence, and who do you think did the job over the last 12 years to restore the reputation that now makes it more of an attractive job?

Only if they intend to replace him with a much cheaper coach + GM combination and spend the savings on players. That is what it will take, but Pedo State U is not going to be leading the way there.

I do agree. Other than South Carolina I detest PSU, hope this is a nail in the coffin for them for a long time. Living in PA I’ve come really dislike this school, all that it does, and for things in its past. They’re also trying to throw money around and buy championships (especially Hockey). Tired of hearing how good they are around here then choke when it matters.

Seems similar to Bo Pelini at Nebraska. He won 9 games a year but never a conference championship. Nebraska then fell off a cliff until just now with Matt Rhule who, ironically is most likely to become next head coach at Penn State.
